HP 14 an013nr: At First Glance

Gone are the days when desktop-replacement laptops were the trend, these days manufacturers release laptops in different forms and sizes. The HP 14 an013nr falls into the netbook size category.

The HP 14 an013nr packs a lot of exciting features and still goes for an affordable price. Although at the time this review was written (March 2022), this laptop was out of stock on Amazon, you should be able to get it at a price close to $200.

Will a laptop come at a cheap price as this and still have a good performance? To find out, let us proceed fully into the review.

HP 14 an013nr: Design, Dimension, and Weight

The HP 14 an013nr appears more attractive and elegant than most inexpensive laptops. Although the laptop’s chassis is made of plastic, it is sturdy.

The laptop lid features a linear groove texture and horizontal brushing lines. For the color option, the HP 14 an013nr comes in a dark gray color which makes it fit perfectly with any environment.

With the linear groove texture, the laptop’s lid feels a bit rough when felt with your palm. At the center of the laptop’s lid, you will find an ”hp” logo with a black background which tends to make the logo more obvious.

Furthermore, the lid is held firmly to the laptop base with its rigid dual hinges. The hinges give no room for flexing, hence, opening the lid with one hand seems almost impossible.

However, when you eventually open the lid with two hands most likely, you will notice its clean 14.0-inch display size. The display is not just neat and attractive, it also features a Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution.

Due to the cheap price of this laptop, I was expecting HD display resolution or below. Fortunately, HP proved me wrong by equipping the HP 14 an013nr with an FHD resolution display.

Therefore, with this display, you should be sure of getting a better display quality than you will get on laptops with HD resolution. To add to this impressive display resolution, the HP 14 an013nr’s display is also an IPS UWVA BrightView.

As an IPS UWVA (In-plane switching ultra-wide viewing angles) display, the HP 14 an013nr’s will deliver excellent viewing angles. Hence, you will have no trouble viewing the screen contents from acute angles.

Additionally, because the display has a BrightView feature, it is very glossy and reflective. Hence, colors are rich and vibrant.

However, due to the high reflectiveness of the display, you might want to avoid using this laptop under direct sunlight.

At this point, I will like to talk about the bezels surrounding the display. The black bezels are pretty thick.

However, the thick top bezel has been judiciously used to house a TrueVision HD Webcam with an integrated digital microphone. The picture quality from this camera is not outstanding however, it will serve you well for video conferencing.

Meanwhile, the lower bezel houses an ”hp” logo at its center.

When you shift your gaze from the upper part of this laptop, you will find its chiclet-style keyboard. For better understanding, a keyboard is chiclet styled if it has elevated rectangular-shaped keys with spaces between them.

Based on the explanation above, it is obvious that the keys on this keyboard will be easy to type on. Other factors that make the keyboard easy to type on are the soft feedback and decent key travel of its keys.

Taking about the key travel, this is the distance that a key goes down when it is pressed for it to register its input. Hence, due to the decent key travel of the HP 14 an013nr’s keys, it will deliver a comfortable and fast typing experience.

Meanwhile, further down the laptop’s deck below the keyboard, you will find the touchpad with dedicated click buttons. This touchpad supports multi-gesture, it feels clicky and has an accurate cursor movement.

Moving on to multimedia, the HP 14 an013nr has a dual stereo speaker at the base of the keyboard. However, these speakers are not loud enough due to the absence of bass.

Since we are here at the laptop’s base, let’s talk about the ports. It might interest you to know that this laptop comes with a lot of ports located at the sides of the laptop’s base.

To be precise, the left side of the laptop has a VGA port, an HDMI port, and an Ethernet port. Furthermore, the left side also has one USB 3.0 port, one USB 2.0 port, headphone, and microphone combo jack.

On the other hand, the right side has just one USB 2.0 port. Meanwhile, the SD card reader slot is located at the left edge of the front base of the laptop.

At this point, let us proceed to the weight and dimensions of this laptop. Regarding that, the HP 14 an013nr weighs 1750 g and measures 345.4 x 241.5 x 23.9 mm (W x D x H).

In comparison, the HP 14 an013nr is bigger than the Acer Spin 3 but weighs less. Speaking of which, the Acer Spin 3 weighs 1920 g and measures 325.12 x 231.1 x 17 mm (W x D x H).

Additionally, the Dell Inspiron 14 5482 is also smaller in dimension but heavier than the HP 14 an013nr. Precisely, it measures 328 x 232.8 x 19.95 mm weighs 1860 g which surpasses this laptop.

Based on the size comparisons, it is obvious that the HP 14 an013nr is a lightweight notebook.

Therefore, considering its lightweight and the overall design of this laptop, it is fair to rate it a nine out of ten in this design review section.

HP 14 an013nr: Processor (CPU) Performance

The HP 14 an013nr comes with a quad-core AMD E2-7110 processor which has a base frequency of 1.80 GHz. Unfortunately, the base frequency cannot be boosted further than that.

In addition to its frequency, this processor also has a 2 MB cache memory. Based on the processor specs, the HP 14 an013nr should be able to run most applications conveniently.

In other to confirm the ability of the processor, let’s discuss this laptop’s performance in a Cinebench R15 benchmark test. Cinebench R15 is a benchmark test that measures a computer’s processing performance by utilizing its cores.

Hence, this benchmark produces two results – single-core and multicore. A single-core score is arrived at when only one processor is used for the processing task.

Meanwhile, a multi-core score is arrived at when all processor cores are utilized.

Equally important is the fact that in this benchmark, the laptop with the highest score performs better.

Based on the benchmark, the HP 14 an013nr had a score of 1340 points in its single-core test. Meanwhile, in the multi-core test, it scored 4900 points.

In comparison, the Acer Aspire E5-722-2611 scored 1429 points in the single-core test. It also scored 4974 points in the multi-core test.

From the test result comparison, we can see that Acer Aspire E5-722-2611 performed better than the HP 14 an013nr despite using the same processor.

Nevertheless, the HP 14 an013nr performance shows that it will handle daily computing tasks with ease. Based on this, I will be rating it seven out of ten in this processor review section.

HP 14 an013nr: Memory (RAM) Performance

The HP 14 an013nr has a single slot for a DDR3L-1600 SDRAM memory. This memory slot supports a standard memory capacity of 4 GB which cannot be upgraded beyond that.

However, for an entry-level laptop like this, a 4 GB memory size is not surprising. Hence, with this memory capacity, the HP 14 an013nr should be able to multitask lightly.

Specifically, it should be able to run 10 Chrome browser tabs smoothly. Additionally, two of the Chrome tabs might as well stream YouTube videos still, the laptop should not lag.

Moreover, you will also be able to move from one browser tab to the other without experiencing a slowdown on this laptop.

Having said that, let me discuss the laptop’s performance in a PCMark 10 benchmark test. For better understanding, PCMark 10 is a test tool that is used to evaluate a computer’s memory performance.

Similar to the benchmark test we discussed in the processor section, a high score in this test represents better performance.

Based on the test, the HP 14 an013nr scored 2,108 points in the benchmark test. This performance is far behind the 5,064 average score of this benchmark.

In comparison, the HP EliteBook 8460p performed better with 3,370 points in the benchmark. Furthermore, the HP 15 F233wm also performed better by scoring 2,358 points.

In conclusion, the performance of the HP 14 an013nr is not remarkable from the benchmark, it is far behind the average score. It also falls behind the other laptops I pitched it against.

Therefore, I will be rating the HP 14 an013nr six out of ten in this memory review section.

HP 14 an013nr: Storage Options and Performance

When it comes to storage, the HP 14 an013nr is quite disappointing. This is because eMMC storage comes in meager storage capacities ranging from 16 GB to 64 GB.

In light of that, the HP 14 an013nr ships with a 32 GB eMMC.

In addition to the mediocre storage space, it is also disappointing that eMMC drives are not expandable. Hence, you will have to make do with the preinstalled storage capacity.

Thankfully, this laptop comes with 1 multi-format SD media card reader. Therefore, the external SD card will serve as an expansion of the storage space.

Meanwhile, storage capacity is not the only important factor to consider when talking about storage, the storage speed is also important. Hence, to determine the speed of the eMMC drive in this laptop, I will share its result in a CrystalDiskMark 3.0 test.

For clarity, CrystalDiskMark measures the sequential read and write speeds of a computer’s storage. Speaking of read and write speeds, they refer to how fast a computer opens and saves files.

Similar to the other benchmarks discussed in this review, in the CrystalDiskMark test, high read and write speeds, measured in MB/s denote a better storage performance.

In light of that, the HP 14 an013nr had a read speed of 158.1 MBps. Meanwhile, it had a write speed of 98.1 MBps in the same test.

In comparison, the ASUS VivoBook E200HA performed better than the HP 14 an013nr. Specifically, it had a read speed of 163.2 MBps and a write speed of 115.3 MBps.

This implies that the ASUS VivoBook will open files and save files faster than the HP 14 an013nr. Nevertheless, the HP 14 an013nr still has a decent storage speed.

Therefore, I will be rating it a seven out of ten in this storage review section.

HP 14 an013nr: Graphics Card Performance

The HP 14 an013nr comes with an integrated AMD Radeon R2 graphics card. This GPU has a frequency of 600 MHz.

However, because the AMD Radeon R2 is integrated, it lacks Video RAM (VRAM). Hence, this GPU will share the laptop’s 4 GB memory with the processor.

The implication of this is that this GPU will be unsuitable for performing intensive graphics tasks. Specifically, the HP 14 an013nr will be incapable of running high-end games and graphics applications.

Speaking of games, this laptop should be able to play Dirt Rally 2015 smoothly at 48.4 fps on low settings. Also, it should be a play Tomb Raider 2013 at 30.8 fps – also at a low setting.

In addition to the gaming performance that I have shown you above, let me also share this laptop’s result in a 3DMark graphics benchmark. Before I do that, you should be aware that a 3DMark benchmark evaluates the 3D graphics handling ability of a GPU.

Additionally, you should note that a high score from this test also represents a better graphics performance. For the test result, the HP 14 an013nr scored 1981 points.

In comparison, the Lenovo G70-35 which uses an AMD Radeon R5 GPU scored 1319 points which makes it behind the HP 14 an013nr. On the other hand, the Acer Aspire E5-722-2611 performed better than the HP 14 an013nr with a score of 2642 points.

For a better comparison perspective, the Acer Aspire E5 uses the same AMD Radeon R5 GPU as the HP 14 an013nr.

Considering all I have said in this section, I will be rating the HP 14 an013nr eight out of ten in this graphics review section.

HP 14 an013nr: Battery Life and Performance

The HP 14 an013nr comes with a 3 cell a 31 Whrs Li-Ion battery. However, HP did not specify how long this battery will last.

Nevertheless, we will discover how long this battery can last by considering its performance in a battery test conducted by laptoping.com. Regarding that, the HP 14 an013nr lasted 5 hours 15 minutes in a web surfing test.

Unfortunately, the 5 hours of battery life shows that the HP 14 an013nr will not power you through all-day computing. However, from a laptop of this category, this battery life is decent.

To give you some perspective, the HP 15 BA079DX with the same battery capacity lasted 3 hours 45 minutes in the same test. So, it is obvious that the HP 14 an013nr offers a better battery life than the HP 15 BA079DX.

Based on the decent performance of the HP 14 an013nr’s battery, I will berate it eight out of ten in this battery review section.
