YouTube does not use one fixed formula to rank every video. It personalizes recommendations for each viewer and each part of the app, using signals such as viewing and search history, subscriptions, feedback, and how people respond when a video is recommended. You can influence the feed by changing that activity and by using YouTube’s recommendation controls.
How YouTube recommendations work
YouTube describes its recommendation system as a constantly evolving set of models that compares your viewing habits with those of similar viewers, then estimates what you might want to watch. Its Help page says the system draws on more than 80 billion pieces of information, which YouTube calls signals. That figure describes the scale of signals YouTube says it uses; it is not a count of recommendations or a public ranking formula.
The system has two broad jobs: identify videos likely to interest you and assess how viewers respond to them. The balance changes by person and by surface. YouTube says there is no set formula because the importance of a signal depends on the individual and changes as viewing habits change.
Personalization signals
Signals that help estimate your interests include watch and search history, subscriptions, likes and dislikes, shares, comments, and responses to prompts such as “Not interested” or “Don’t recommend channel.” YouTube also describes using inferred interests, viewing routines, language, and satisfaction-survey responses. Device and time of day can provide context alongside your past activity.

What happens when a video is recommended
YouTube also considers how viewers respond after a video is offered: whether they choose it, how long they watch, and whether their response suggests they found it worthwhile. A click can signal interest, but it does not by itself show that the video delivered on its title or thumbnail. Watch time matters, but it is not the whole objective; YouTube also says it uses satisfaction surveys and predictions based on survey responses, as well as likes, dislikes, and sharing.
Why one video appears on one YouTube screen but not another
The recommendation system uses overlapping signals across YouTube, but the main signal can differ by surface. A recommendation on Home is not necessarily ranked by the same mix as a suggestion beside a video you are already watching.

| Surface | What YouTube says it emphasizes | What that means for viewers |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Watch history is the primary basis for homepage recommendations. | Your previous viewing has a particularly direct role in what appears on the homepage. If watch history is off and there is little prior history, recommendations are limited while search and navigation elements remain. |
| Up next | The video currently playing is the main signal. | The next suggestion is strongly related to your current viewing context, though other signals may also matter. |
| Shorts Feed | The stream is personalized to predict what you want to see next. | Your Shorts feed is tailored to you rather than being a single universal sequence. |
| Channel and destination pages | Some shelves on channel pages and pages for Shopping, Music, Movies, and TV can be personalized. | Not every item on those pages is necessarily a personalized recommendation; the extent varies by shelf or page. |
Why clicks and watch time are not enough
YouTube has described changing its ranking approach because a click alone can reward a misleading title or thumbnail. It added watch time in 2012 as another way to assess viewing, but later explained that simply counting minutes still does not establish whether a viewer valued the experience. YouTube reported that incorporating watch time initially caused a 20% drop in views in that 2012 change; that is a YouTube-reported immediate result, not a general prediction for a channel or video.
YouTube now describes its approach in terms of appeal, engagement, and satisfaction, considered with context and responsibility. Appeal includes whether people choose a video; engagement includes viewing duration; satisfaction can include likes, dislikes, and survey responses. Context can include location, language, time of day, subscriptions, and search or watch history. The result is not simply “the video with the most watch time wins.”

How to change or reset your recommendations
There is no single reset button described in YouTube’s recommendation guidance. Instead, you can change the activity and feedback that inform the feed. The effect may take time, and deleting or pausing history can also remove useful personalization.
- Remove a specific influence: Delete an individual video from watch history or an individual query from search history. YouTube says removing a triggering video from watch history can change future recommendations.
- Clear or pause history: You can clear watch or search history, or pause either one so new activity is not added to that history. Pausing history is different from clearing it: clearing removes recorded activity, while pausing stops new activity from being recorded in that history.
- Give direct feedback: Use “Not interested” on a recommendation or “Don’t recommend channel” when you do not want a channel suggested. These controls tell the system more directly than simply skipping a video.
- Adjust positive-interest signals: Remove videos from your liked videos or edit and delete playlists if they no longer reflect what you want YouTube to infer about your interests.
- Use topic choices where available: YouTube offers topic controls in some recommendation contexts, which can help steer suggestions toward or away from broad interests.
- Browse privately for a session: Use Incognito when you do not want that session’s activity to influence recommendations associated with your account.
If you turn watch history off and have little prior history, expect Home recommendations to become limited rather than more precisely tailored. You can keep history on and remove only the particular videos or searches that are distorting your feed if you want to preserve other personalization.

How YouTube addresses harmful or borderline recommendations
YouTube says it uses classifiers and human evaluators to identify authoritative material and reduce recommendations of borderline content or videos likely to misinform viewers harmfully. It says certified experts are used for some health information. These measures address recommendations, not a guarantee that every video shown is accurate or that harmful material will never appear.
YouTube reported a 70% drop in watch time on recommended borderline content among non-subscribed viewers in the United States after demotion changes in 2019. Its published PDF says those changes had rolled out to every market by March 2021. YouTube also stated a policy goal of keeping recommendation-driven borderline views below 0.5% of overall YouTube views. These are company-reported outcomes and a company-stated goal, not figures from an independent audit; the 70% figure is specifically about watch time in the United States, not all views or all harmful content.

What the algorithm means for creators
YouTube’s creator guidance advises focusing on whether the intended audience likes the content and on maintaining recognizable quality, rather than trying to game a single ranking signal. A video’s performance after it is offered matters, but upload time alone is not established as a reliable way to improve long-term viewership. YouTube says it has not observed evidence that publishing time affects long-term views; timing may matter for a scheduled Premiere or live stream.
Series, playlists, end screens, and clear prompts to watch a relevant next video can help interested viewers continue. They do not guarantee a recommendation boost: the useful test is whether the next video genuinely serves the audience that chose the current one.
