When you hit send, a hosted AI service receives a request, processes it with relevant context and settings, and returns a generated response. That request may contain more than the words you just typed: depending on the product and features you use, it can also include conversation history, attachments, instructions, or information sent to a tool. What happens to that data afterward depends on the service, account type, settings, and features involved.
What happens to my message after I hit send?
- You enter content or use a feature. You might type text, attach a file or image, continue an existing conversation, or provide input through another feature.
- The app or API submits a request to its service. The service processes the request and any associated context or settings. This is a general description of a hosted AI service—not a claim about a universal network route or internal system design.
- The model processes the request and generates a response. The service returns that response to the app or API caller.
The exact path between your device and the model is product-specific. Provider documentation describes data handling and request features, but does not establish one browser-to-model route, tokenizer, or inference-server layout for every AI product.
What am I actually sending to an AI?
The visible text in the message box is only one possible part of a request. Depending on the product and what you do, a request may include:
- The text in your current message.
- Earlier conversation content supplied as context.
- Images or files you attach.
- Instructions, settings, or other fields in an API request.
- Content passed to an enabled tool or outside service.
These are possibilities, not a universal checklist of fields included in every request. OpenAI’s API data documentation, for example, discusses prompts, responses, metadata derived from customer content, files and images, and application state. Anthropic also documents feature-specific behavior and separate eligibility for some tools. Neither establishes the exact fields a particular person’s client sends.

Does the AI keep my prompts or use them to train?
Retention and model training are separate questions. A provider may retain data for a period without using it to improve models, or apply different rules to consumer chats, business workspaces, API traffic, and particular features. The following policies describe named providers and product categories; they are not guarantees for every AI app.
OpenAI consumer services
OpenAI says content from consumer ChatGPT and other services for individuals may be used to improve model performance depending on the user’s settings. Its documentation says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces, and the API Platform is not used to improve models by default; organizations can choose to share data where available. Temporary Chats are excluded from model improvement while temporary, but OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. OpenAI’s consumer data documentation also says content is stored on OpenAI systems and trusted service providers’ systems in the United States and around the world. Selected portions may go to service providers for data annotation and safety purposes. Limited authorized personnel and service providers may access content for specified needs, including abuse or security investigations, support, legal matters, or model improvement when the user has not opted out.

OpenAI API
OpenAI’s API data-controls page states that, as of March 1, 2023, API data is not used to train or improve OpenAI models unless the customer explicitly opts in. That does not mean every form of storage is disabled: abuse-monitoring logs may include prompts, responses, and derived metadata, and are retained by default for up to 30 days, subject to legal requirements and exceptions for protecting services or others. Separately, some API features store application state to fulfill a request. For the Responses API, the documented default application-state period is 30 days when the applicable storage conditions are met; endpoint and feature exceptions apply. Anthropic commercial products and API
Anthropic’s commercial retention policy, dated July 1, 2026, says API inputs and outputs are automatically deleted from its backend within 30 days, except for services with longer customer-controlled retention, an agreement such as zero data retention (ZDR), policy enforcement, or legal compliance. Commercial products that save and continue conversations retain chats for product continuity. The policy says flagged chats may be retained for up to two years and associated trust-and-safety classification scores for up to seven years. These are maximum periods stated in Anthropic’s policy, not a claim that every chat is kept for that long. Details are in Anthropic’s commercial data-retention policy.

Does zero data retention mean my data disappears immediately?
No. A ZDR arrangement has a defined scope; it is not a universal promise that no system ever processes or retains any related information. Anthropic says that, under an enabled ZDR arrangement, it does not store customer prompts or responses at rest after the API response is returned for eligible features. The arrangement requires organization-level enablement, and some stateful or tool features are ineligible. Anthropic also says flagged chats or sessions can be retained for up to two years, and data may be retained where required by law. Check Anthropic’s API and data-retention documentation for feature eligibility and exceptions.
OpenAI’s API controls describe abuse-monitoring logs and application state separately from training. That distinction matters when evaluating a retention setting: a control affecting one data category or endpoint does not automatically cover other stored state, features, or exceptions.

Can a person, tool, or another company see what I send?
Possibly, depending on the product and workflow. For OpenAI consumer services, limited authorized personnel and service providers may access content for the specified purposes described above. If an AI request uses an external tool, data sent to that tool is subject to the outside service’s policies. OpenAI’s API documentation says data transmitted to third-party services is governed by those services’ retention policies.
Hosting can add another boundary. Anthropic says that when Claude runs through Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud Agent Platform, the cloud provider is the data processor and its own retention and compliance documentation applies. In a tool-enabled or cloud-hosted workflow, the model provider may not be the only organization handling request data.

How to judge what a privacy setting covers
- Identify the product and account: consumer app, business workspace, or commercial API can have different training and retention rules.
- Separate training from storage: “not used to train” does not by itself mean “not retained.” Look for separate rules on logs, application state, and saved conversations.
- Check the feature and endpoint: retention controls such as ZDR may cover only eligible API features, not every tool or stateful workflow.
- Include attachments and tools: files, images, prior context, and content sent to third-party services may have separate handling.
- Check intermediaries: a cloud platform or outside tool may have its own processing and retention terms.
- Read exceptions and dates: safety, legal, or service-protection provisions can qualify a stated retention window, and policies can change.
