The PFAS-specific examples available use other types of sensors. That distinction matters: a response from a biosensor is not, by itself, proof of which PFAS is present or at what concentration.
How a yeast biosensor works
A whole-cell yeast biosensor connects recognition of a target—or an effect the target has on the cell—to an output that can be measured. In some designs, the cell’s metabolism or viability changes in response to exposure. In engineered designs, yeast may express a protein that recognizes a molecule and feeds that recognition into a signaling pathway. A reporter gene can then produce a detectable output.
Depending on the design, that output may be fluorescence, luminescence, color, electrical activity, or a change in metabolism or viability. The output and its relationship to the target determine whether the test is qualitative or can be calibrated for quantitative measurement. A general review of yeast-based biosensors describes these sensing architectures and applications, but does not establish yeast detection of PFAS in the material reviewed here: Martin-Yken, 2020.
Has a yeast biosensor been shown to detect PFAS?
The sources covered here do not establish a yeast-based PFAS detection sensor. They describe yeast biosensors for other targets and PFAS sensors built on non-yeast platforms. This is a bounded finding about the cited sources, not proof that no yeast/PFAS work exists anywhere.

For example, a 2007 study reported an engineered yeast biosensor for paraoxon, an organophosphate pesticide. Its response was dose- and time-dependent, with a reported detection time of 15 to 30 minutes. That result applies to the paraoxon system, not PFAS: PubMed abstract.
What the PFAS sensor examples actually show
A fluorescent sensor for selected long-chain PFAS
A 2024 PFAS sensing mini-review describes a dual-fluorescent approach for long-chain PFAS. It reports detection limits of 648 ppb for PFDA, 98.3 ppb for PFDoA, and 57.1 ppb for PFTeDA. For PFDoA, the review reports a detection limit of 461 ppt after solid-phase extraction. These figures belong to that specific sensor approach and its conditions; they are not general PFAS performance figures and do not describe a yeast sensor: 2024 PFAS sensing mini-review.

A protein-based sensor tested with groundwater
A 2024 RSC Sustainability article describes a protein-based biosensor used to detect spiked PFOA in complex groundwater. The authors say its measurements agreed with independent LC/MS-MS testing using EPA Method 1633. This finding is specific to that sensor and the reported sample conditions; it does not validate yeast-based PFAS detection. The indexed article text states: “In this study we demonstrate the sensor can detect spiked PFOA in complex ground water samples collected adjacent to Loring AFB with minimal sample preparation in agreement with independent LC/MS-MS testing for PFAS using method EPA 1633.” RSC Sustainability, 2024.
What a biosensor result can—and cannot—tell you
A reporter signal means the assay responded under its particular conditions. To interpret it as evidence about a specific PFAS, a study needs to establish what compound the sensor recognizes and how the signal maps to concentration. Important details include the calibration curve, operating range, selectivity against related compounds, sample matrix, sample preparation, response time, and comparison with an established analytical method.

- Specificity: Has it been tested against related PFAS or other substances that could produce a similar signal?
- Calibration and range: Is there a validated relationship between signal and concentration, and over what range?
- Matrix and preparation: Was the sensor tested in the relevant water or other sample, and what preparation was required?
- Confirmation: Was the result checked against an established analytical method such as LC/MS-MS?
A yeast biosensor implementation review discusses analytical performance and the practical challenges of moving from laboratory concepts toward real-world monitoring, including stability and safe deployment: Wahid et al., 2023. The available PFAS examples illustrate why detection limits and preparation requirements must remain tied to the particular sensor and protocol.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to treat a result as a screen rather than a confirmed measurement
A biosensor may help screen samples or prioritize them for further analysis, but the evidence here does not support treating a yeast response as a stand-alone regulatory compliance result. The cited agreement with LC/MS-MS concerns a protein-based sensor tested with spiked groundwater, not a yeast sensor. For a decision that depends on the concentration or identity of PFAS, look for confirmation using an appropriate analytical method and a protocol suited to the sample.
