Xbox Game Pass is a subscription, not a purchase of every game in its catalog. You can play eligible titles while your subscription is active and the titles remain in the library. Downloading a game does not give you a permanent license, and cloud streaming is available only for supported games, devices, regions, and plans.
What Xbox Game Pass includes
Game Pass gives subscribers access to a changing library of games and other plan-specific benefits. Microsoft’s current US plan page lists four options, with headline library sizes shown below. These are the figures displayed by Microsoft when its page was accessed on October 7, 2026; they are not independently audited counts. Catalogs, features, offers, and availability can change.

Plan names and headline counts do not tell you whether a particular game is included or whether a feature works on your device. Microsoft says game titles, library size, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform. Check the current Xbox Game Pass plans and FAQ and the live game catalog before subscribing.
How long you can play a Game Pass game
You can access a title while both conditions are true: your subscription is active, and the title is still in the Game Pass library for your plan. Access ends if the subscription expires or is canceled, or if the game leaves the library—even if it remains installed on your console or PC. Microsoft’s FAQ puts it this way: “Game Pass subscribers enjoy access to games in the library until either the subscription is canceled/expires, or a game leaves the Game Pass library.”

Installing a Game Pass title is a way to play it under the subscription; it is not the same as buying it. If you want to keep playing after access ends, check the game’s current purchase options. Do not assume a title will remain in the catalog for a particular length of time.
Downloading versus cloud streaming
Download and install
For downloadable games, install the title on a supported console or PC and play through that platform. Microsoft describes Microsoft Store games as digital downloads that can be downloaded, installed, or reinstalled. Stream supported games
Cloud gaming lets subscribers play supported games on supported devices without first downloading the game. Microsoft also says select games a subscriber owns may be streamable. Not every Game Pass title can be streamed, and the available plans, devices, regions, and monthly cloud playtime limits vary. Microsoft’s current US page says PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming. Check the live plan details and catalog for your country and device before relying on streaming.
Can you play downloaded games offline?
Do not assume an installed Game Pass game will work offline or remain authorized for a fixed number of days. Offline verification rules can depend on platform and current Xbox instructions; the official material cited here does not establish a universal interval or promise. Check the current Xbox guidance for your console or PC before disconnecting for an extended period.

How to stop Game Pass from renewing
Microsoft says recurring billing is on by default for subscriptions. Turning it off stops a future renewal when completed before the next billing date; it does not necessarily remove benefits immediately. Microsoft says access continues until expiration after recurring billing is turned off. Check the account’s displayed expiration date and subscription status to confirm when access ends.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account used for the subscription and open the account’s subscriptions and recurring billing settings, or manage the subscription from an Xbox console.
- Select the Game Pass subscription and choose the option to turn off recurring billing or cancel, following the current prompts.
- Review the confirmation and displayed end date. If you subscribed through a third party, check that provider’s account and cancellation process as well.
Microsoft’s Xbox plan FAQ also describes a limited refund scenario for a recent recurring billing charge: a request must be made within 30 days, and the scenario is limited to once per Microsoft account per subscription product. Refund eligibility and terms can vary, so consult Microsoft’s current cancellation and refund guidance rather than assuming a charge qualifies.

What to check before choosing a plan
- Whether the games you want are currently in the catalog for your region and platform.
- Whether you need console access, PC access, or both.
- Whether a desired feature—such as day-one titles, console multiplayer, or cloud gaming—is included in that specific plan.
- Whether your device and region support the feature, and whether plan-specific cloud limits suit your use.
- The current local price, renewal terms, and any offer conditions on Microsoft’s page.
