Xbox backward compatibility lets selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games run on newer consoles—but it does not make every older game playable. On Xbox Series X, a supported digital game is installed through the account that owns it; a supported disc game downloads to the console and must stay in the drive to verify access. Xbox Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot play physical game discs.
Which Xbox games work on newer consoles?
Compatibility is determined by the game, not just by which Xbox generation it came from. Xbox Series X|S supports selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles. Xbox One supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. An Xbox One game does not run on an Xbox 360 or the original Xbox.
Check the official Xbox backward compatibility catalog for the exact title and console. The catalog covers supported titles, not every game released for an earlier Xbox. Microsoft does not provide an authoritative percentage that describes how much of each generation’s library is compatible, so a title-by-title check is more useful than assuming broad coverage.
How digital backward-compatible games work
Sign in on the newer console with the Microsoft account that owns the digital game. If the title is supported and available to that account, find it in Ready to Install and download it. On Xbox Series X|S, the game is installed on the console’s storage.

Digital ownership alone does not make an unsupported game playable. Store availability and account or territory conditions can also affect access, so check the listing for the game and the terms that apply to your account.
How backward-compatible game discs work
For a supported physical game, insert the disc into a disc-drive Xbox. The console downloads the game to its storage; the disc is still required in the drive when you play, because it verifies access. The disc therefore acts as the license check rather than necessarily supplying the game data during play.

- Confirm that the game is listed as compatible with your console.
- Insert the disc and allow the console to download and install the game.
- Leave the disc in the drive to launch and play the installed game.
This process requires a supported title, a usable disc, and a console with an optical drive. Microsoft described the Series X process in October 2020: “Simply insert your favorite backward compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc into your Xbox Series X, install the game, and you’ll be ready to play.” That statement describes the disc-install process, not universal compatibility.
Can Xbox Series S play disc games?
No. Xbox Series S is digital-games-only and cannot read or authenticate physical game discs. If your copy of a supported game is on disc, you need a compatible Xbox with a disc drive to use that copy directly. Confirm that the particular console model has an optical drive before buying; console models and local availability can vary.

Backward compatibility is not the same as Smart Delivery
Backward compatibility means that a supported game from an earlier Xbox generation can run on a newer console. Smart Delivery is a separate feature for eligible games released across Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S: it provides the appropriate version for the console. Neither feature means that every backward-compatible title has a Series X|S edition or receives an automatic graphics upgrade. Specific features vary by game, as the Xbox catalog notes.

- Game: Look up the exact title in the current Xbox compatibility catalog.
- Ownership: For a digital copy, use the account that owns it. For a disc copy, use a compatible disc-drive console and keep the disc inserted while playing.
- Console: Series S cannot use discs; Series X models with an optical drive can use supported physical games.
- Expected version: Check whether you want basic backward compatibility or whether the game is separately eligible for Smart Delivery or other title-specific features.
Microsoft reported more than 500,000 hours of gameplay testing across four generations of Xbox in the year before its October 2020 Series X|S announcement. That is a historical testing figure, not a current total and not a guarantee that every older game works.
