X-ray telescopes detect matter falling onto a neutron star by measuring the X-rays produced as gas heats up, then analyzing changes in the signal. Astronomers do not see individual particles fall; they infer the flow from its brightness, energy spectrum, pulses, bursts, and—in some cases—polarization.

How matter falling onto a neutron star produces X-rays

  1. Gravity draws in gas. In a binary system, a neutron star can pull material from a companion. The gas may collect in a disk and spiral inward.
  2. The infalling gas heats up. As material moves deeper into the neutron star’s gravitational field, released energy heats it and produces X-rays.
  3. The magnetic field can funnel the flow. In some systems, the star’s strong magnetic field guides gas toward regions near its magnetic poles. These hot spots emit X-rays rather than the material landing evenly across the surface.
  4. Telescopes record the photons. Instruments measure incoming X-rays over time and at different energies. Scientists use those observations and physical models to infer where the gas is and how it is moving.

The exact flow geometry can vary. A simplified picture of a disk feeding magnetic-pole hot spots is useful, but it is not a single configuration that applies to every neutron-star system.

What X-ray pulses reveal

A neutron star rotates, so a hot spot can sweep across our line of sight like a beam. If the signal brightens and fades regularly, the repeating pattern is consistent with emission from a rotating source. Pulse timing and changes in pulse shape help astronomers study the star’s rotation and accretion-powered hot spots.

In NASA’s May 2018 report on the system J17062, astrophysicist Tod Strohmayer explained the interpretation: “These pulses mark the locations of hot spots around the pulsar’s magnetic poles, so they allow astronomers to determine how fast it’s spinning.” A pulse pattern is evidence to interpret, not a direct image of gas falling onto the surface. NASA’s J17062 report also describes NICER observations totaling more than seven hours over 5.3 days, with additional observations in October and November supporting the orbital-period result.

How bursts add evidence about the neutron-star surface

Gas can accumulate on a neutron star’s surface before undergoing runaway thermonuclear burning. That ignition produces a sudden X-ray burst. A burst’s changing brightness—its light curve—and variations during the burst can distinguish this event from the more regular pulses associated with rotating hot spots.

In a 2019 NASA report on SAX J1808.4-3658, NICER observed burst oscillations as well as X-rays reflected from the accretion disk. The report gives the pulsar’s spin as 401 rotations per second and its distance as about 11,000 light-years; those figures describe that particular system, not neutron stars generally. Reflected X-rays provide information about material near the star, while burst timing offers clues to the surface burning and its interaction with the surrounding environment.

What spectra and polarization contribute

Energy spectra and disk reflection

An X-ray spectrum shows how the observed signal is distributed across energies. Changes in spectral behavior, including X-rays reflected by nearby disk material, help astronomers investigate the environment close to the neutron star. These measurements complement timing: a pulse pattern tracks changes over time, while a spectrum helps characterize the X-ray emission.

Polarization

X-ray polarization adds evidence about the geometry and origin of emission. NASA’s 2025 report on the pulsar J1023 describes IXPE polarization measurements interpreted alongside NICER, Swift, and optical observations to study the pulsar’s interaction with an accretion disk. Polarization is one part of that combined analysis; one measurement alone does not establish a definitive picture.

Why astronomers combine instruments

Different measurements answer different questions. NICER contributes sensitive timing and spectroscopy; IXPE measures X-ray polarization. Observations from multiple facilities, including other wavelengths, can provide context that brightness alone cannot. For example, the J1023 study combined X-ray polarization with NICER, Swift, and optical observations rather than relying on a single signal.

Measurement What it can help reveal
Pulse timing and shape Recurring emission consistent with rotating hot spots, and changes in the rotating source’s signal.
Burst light curve and oscillations Sudden thermonuclear burning and variations during a burst.
Spectrum and reflected X-rays The energy behavior of the emission and clues about nearby disk material.
X-ray polarization Additional evidence about emission geometry and origin, interpreted with other observations.

What the telescope detects—and what astronomers infer

The direct measurements are X-ray photons and how their timing, energies, brightness, and polarization vary. The presence and behavior of accretion, the location of hot spots, and the interaction between a disk and a neutron star are interpretations built from those observations and physical models. Not every neutron star pulses or produces observable bursts; the signals depend on the system and the conditions being observed.
