Heat-shrink tubing is supplied expanded; when heated, it contracts around a cable, splice, or component. “Wrap-around” heat-shrink is a specialized format designed to fit around an already assembled item. Ordinary tube-shaped tubing generally has to be slid into position before shrinking. The temperature needed, amount of recovery, and sealing performance depend on the exact product.
How does heat-shrink tubing shrink when heated?
The tubing begins in an expanded state and recovers around the item as heat is applied. Some products also have an inner adhesive lining that melts and flows during heating, helping seal the interface. TE Connectivity says its TAT-125 tubing’s lining flows with application heat to form an environmental seal; the company identifies moisture sealing, splice protection, and damaged-wire-insulation repair among its uses. Those are product applications, not a guarantee that the tubing suits every repair.
Temperature specifications are product-specific. For example, TE lists TAT-125’s minimum shrink temperature as 95°C and its minimum full-recovery temperature as 125°C. These are specifications for TAT-125, not general settings for all heat-shrink tubing. See TE Connectivity’s TAT-125 specifications.
What makes wrap-around tubing different?
Conventional tubing is a closed sleeve: it generally must be positioned over the cable or component before shrinking. That can be impractical if the cable is already connected at both ends or the component is assembled.

Purpose-built wrap-around heat-shrink products are designed to be installed around assembled electrical systems or components. Zippertubing describes its PRT as a wrap-around heat-shrink format for those applications. What product specifications should you compare?
Two manufacturer examples show why it is important to compare named products rather than assume one universal shrink ratio or heating temperature:

Figures in the table are the manufacturers’ specifications for the named products, not industry-wide recommendations. A shrink ratio describes how much the tubing can recover in size; check the supplied and recovered dimensions to confirm the recovered tubing will fit the target. Consult the HellermannTyton TA40 product specifications alongside the TE specifications.

Adhesive-lined tubing is relevant when the installation calls for a seal as well as a recovered sleeve. TE describes TAT-125 for moisture sealing, splice protection, and damaged insulation repair. HellermannTyton describes TA40 as adhesive-lined tubing for environmental sealing in harness, connector, and ultrasonic-splice applications. These stated uses do not establish suitability for every environment, cable, or repair; check the exact product instructions and requirements.

How should you choose and apply it?
- Decide how the tubing must be installed. If a closed sleeve can slide over the item, a conventional tube-style product may fit the job. If the cable or component is already assembled and cannot be threaded through a sleeve, look for a purpose-built wrap-around product.
- Check dimensions and recovery. Compare the supplied and recovered diameters with the target, and verify the product’s shrink ratio.
- Match the performance specifications to the application. Check minimum shrink and full-recovery temperatures where stated, operating-temperature range, adhesive lining, and intended use.
- Use the product’s specified heating method. HellermannTyton lists a hot-air tool or ShrinkPad for TA40. That does not establish a universal tool setting or technique; follow the selected tubing manufacturer’s instructions.
