Yes—many x86 and x64 Windows games can run on Windows 11 PCs with Arm processors, but compatibility and performance vary by game and device. Windows includes Prism, which translates a game’s x86 instructions into Arm64 instructions as it runs. That can make a game usable without a native Arm version, but it does not emulate every driver, guarantee that anti-cheat will work, or promise a particular frame rate.
What Prism does when you launch a game
Prism is built into Windows 11 on Arm; it is not a separate emulator you need to install. It translates blocks of x86 or x64 instructions into Arm64 code while the game runs. Windows can cache translated code blocks, reducing the need to translate the same code again. The game itself remains an x86 or x64 program rather than becoming a native Arm game.
Microsoft describes the process as “a software simulator” that uses just-in-time compilation to translate blocks of x86 instructions into Arm64 instructions, with optimizations to improve the generated code. Microsoft Learn: How emulation works on Arm.

Why one game works and another does not
CPU instruction requirements
A game may depend on CPU features beyond the basic x86 instruction set. Microsoft documents support for AVX, AVX2, BMI, FMA, and F16C in Prism on Windows 11 24H2 and newer. That helps with some software requirements, but does not ensure that every game or launcher will work.
Windows provides per-app emulation settings that can change which CPU features an app sees. Use an override only when there is guidance for the specific game: changing what the app can detect can reduce performance, cause a crash, or prevent launch. Graphics API and device hardware
Microsoft documents support on Arm for x86 apps that use DirectX 9, 10, 11, and 12. That is a compatibility statement, not an FPS guarantee. The result still depends on the game’s rendering path, graphics hardware, drivers, and the rest of the device.
OpenGL needs more care. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance points users toward DirectX mode when an app has problems with OpenGL or hardware-accelerated OpenGL. Microsoft Surface guidance separately warns of possible compatibility issues with games using OpenGL versions above 3.3. Drivers and anti-cheat
Prism translates user-mode code; it does not translate kernel-mode drivers. Any kernel driver a game depends on must have a native Arm64 version. That can affect driver-dependent features even when the game’s main executable launches. Microsoft warns that games relying on anti-cheat drivers not made for Windows 11 Arm may not work. Support is changing over time. Microsoft has announced Easy Anti-Cheat support on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs and cited Fortnite and Gears of War: Reloaded as examples. Those examples do not establish that every game using Easy Anti-Cheat—or games using other anti-cheat systems—will work. Check the exact title’s current requirements and compatibility status. How to check a game before installing or troubleshooting it
- Confirm your Windows version and device. Check that the PC runs Windows 11 on Arm, then note its processor, graphics hardware, and Windows version. Prism capabilities differ by Windows release, including the CPU features documented for version 24H2 and newer.
- Check the exact game with its publisher and compatibility listings. Look for the game’s name in the Windows on Arm Ready game compatibility list, and check the publisher’s current requirements and support notes. Pay particular attention to the Windows version and device represented by a listing, along with anti-cheat or driver requirements. Microsoft describes the list as an evolving third-party resource to which it contributes data, so treat a listing as useful evidence rather than a guarantee.
- Review CPU and graphics requirements. Check whether the game requires particular CPU instruction features and whether it offers DirectX or OpenGL rendering modes. DirectX support can help establish that a graphics path is supported, but does not predict how smoothly a particular game will run.
- Apply a Prism override only for a specific compatibility issue. If game-specific guidance recommends it, open the game’s executable’s Properties > Compatibility > Windows on Arm > Change emulation settings. Avoid treating the settings as a general performance fix; an override can make the game slower, crash, or fail to start. Microsoft Learn: emulation settings.
- Separate access to a game from the game’s compatibility. The Xbox PC app is available on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs and supports local downloads from its catalog, including some titles offered through Game Pass. Catalog access does not mean every listed game will run or perform well on every Arm PC. Microsoft also describes Xbox Performance Fit guidance for assessing how titles match a device’s capabilities. What to expect from performance
Translation makes compatibility possible, but the available Microsoft sources do not establish a general frame-rate benchmark or success rate for Windows on Arm gaming. Performance depends on the title, its graphics and CPU demands, the device, and its drivers. For a concrete example of the hardware category, Microsoft’s Surface documentation identifies the Surface Laptop 7th Edition with a Snapdragon processor as a Windows on Arm device using Prism; that is not a benchmark or a gaming recommendation.
