A honey bee colony can function as an integrated biological unit: workers coordinate brood care, foraging, defense, and resource use in ways that affect the group as a whole. A 2026 review advances a more specific—and contested—claim: each queen-defined colony is a mortal superorganism, while a nest used across queen generations is a matrilineage of successive superorganisms. That perspective changes how beekeepers might describe requeening, swarming, and colony health, but it does not prove that any standard management practice should be abandoned.
What it means to call a honey bee colony a superorganism
“Superorganism” describes a group whose members coordinate functions in ways that produce group-level organization and adaptation. In a honey bee colony, individual workers forage, care for brood, defend the nest, and respond to changing resource conditions. Those activities are not interchangeable with the life of a single bee, yet neither does the group-level view imply that individual bees do not matter.
Research has examined honey bee colonies as group-level adaptive units, including collective communication and feedback during foraging. This established way of thinking treats the colony as a meaningful level of biological organization, alongside the individual bee. Seeley’s 1997 article provides an early discussion of colonies as group-level adaptive units: PubMed record.
What the 2026 review adds: a colony may not persist unchanged through queen turnover
Bonhoff and Helanterä’s 2026 review revisits what counts as the same colony when queens change. It contrasts two interpretations: one in which the nest-occupying colony continues through successive queens, and another in which a queen-defined superorganism has a finite life. The authors argue for the second interpretation: a queen and her colony form a mortal superorganism, and continued occupation of a nest through queen generations is better understood as a matrilineage of successive superorganisms.

The distinction is about biological identity, not whether a nest or its worker population can persist. Under the review’s framework, a new queen with a different genotype marks a new superorganismal identity. The authors argue this account better fits parent-offspring relationships and sexual reproduction. It is a scholarly interpretation, not a settled management rule or a controlled comparison of beekeeping systems. Read the review in Insectes Sociaux.
How this lens changes the question of requeening
In ordinary management language, requeening can sound like renewing the same colony. In the 2026 review’s framework, replacing a queen who is not the old queen’s daughter instead installs a queen with a different genotype and therefore begins a new superorganism. Bonhoff and Helanterä describe common requeening in stark terms—as ending one superorganism and implanting another—and argue that practices designed around production or pollination can carry a cost in superorganismal lives.

That is a conceptual and normative implication of the authors’ view, not evidence from a trial showing that requeening is harmful overall. Nor does it establish that beekeepers should stop requeening. A practical decision still depends on the colony’s condition, the beekeeper’s aims, and locally appropriate management evidence. The useful change is to ask what a requeening decision is intended to achieve, what it means for the colony as a group, and what alternatives are supported in the circumstances—not to infer a universal prescription from a debate about identity.
Why swarming and reproduction are distinct in this account
The review argues that swarming itself is not reproduction: it occurs before fertilization. In its interpretation, departure of the old queen can allow the maternal superorganism to survive the reproductive process, while the resulting lineage may continue through distinct queen-defined superorganisms. This reframes swarming as part of a larger life-history sequence rather than treating the swarm event alone as the colony’s reproduction.

Colony health includes collective defenses
Individual bee health is only part of the picture. Social immunity refers to behaviors and other traits that reduce infection intensity or transmission at colony scale. USDA Agricultural Research Service describes several honey bee defenses, including hygienic behavior, grooming between nestmates, collection of antimicrobial materials, and propolis use. Some defenses are present routinely; others are induced by parasites or pathogens. The agency notes that breeding for natural defenses may help health and productivity, but these traits do not replace monitoring, diagnosis, or locally appropriate disease control. See the USDA ARS publication record.
A colony-centered health assessment therefore looks beyond whether individual bees appear healthy. It also considers group behavior and outcomes, such as whether workers remove compromised brood or use nest materials with antimicrobial properties. Those observations add a level of evidence; they do not, by themselves, identify the cause of a problem or establish which intervention will work.

Compare management by purpose, conditions, and tradeoffs
A 2019 European review organizes beekeeping practices into six broad categories. It considers why practices are applied, their potential effects on colonies, and how timing and effectiveness can vary with circumstances. The categories are useful for structuring decisions, not as a universal protocol:
- Chemical control
- Replacing brood comb
- Replacing comb containing feed sources
- Supplementary feeding
- Changes in worker numbers
- Beekeeper category or experience
For any option, a colony-centered assessment asks what outcome it is meant to produce, how the colony is currently doing, when and under what conditions the practice is appropriate, and what effects it may have beyond the immediate goal. The same choice may look different when the priority is honey production or pollination service than when the accounting also includes colony-level health, reproduction, and lineage continuity.

There is no direct, controlled comparison in these sources of two complete beekeeping systems—one organized around conventional production goals and another around superorganism identity. The categories are decision dimensions, not evidence that one approach ranks above another. The review of European management practices is available through ScienceDirect.
Disease management has ecological and evolutionary dimensions
Management choices also interact with disease ecology: host and parasite traits, transmission, and the possibility that practices affect selection over time. A 2017 review makes the case for considering ecological and evolutionary approaches to honey bee disease management. That perspective supports asking how an intervention fits into broader host–parasite dynamics; it does not show that a particular named practice reliably produces a specific evolutionary outcome. See Ecological and evolutionary approaches to managing honeybee disease.
A practical way to use the superorganism perspective
The framework is most useful as a way to broaden management questions, not as a replacement for evidence or local judgment. When considering a practice, beekeepers can ask:
- What is the intended result—production, pollination, disease control, colony persistence, or another goal?
- What evidence comes from individual bees, and what evidence concerns colony-level behavior or outcomes?
- How do colony condition, timing, regional environment, and beekeeper experience affect the choice?
- What tradeoffs might arise for health, reproduction, or continuity across queen generations?
- Could disease-control choices have ecological or evolutionary consequences that should be considered?
These questions keep the biological identity debate distinct from practical proof. The 2026 review offers a different account of what continues across queen turnover; the broader management literature shows why decisions must still be evaluated by their aims, conditions, and observed outcomes.
