How teams reach the Champions Shanghai 2026 playoffs
The event begins with 16 teams split into four GSL groups. The top two teams in each group advance, producing the eight-team playoff field. These are the Champions Shanghai rules, not a description of regional VCT playoffs or VALORANT Premier.

How the double-elimination bracket works
In a double-elimination bracket, losing once does not end a team’s tournament. After its first playoff loss, a team continues in the lower bracket, where it must keep winning to stay alive. A second loss eliminates it. Riot’s event explainer puts it plainly: “Two losses send you home.”

That means a team can lose a match and still win the tournament, but it cannot lose twice. Teams that keep winning in the upper bracket avoid that lower-bracket route; teams that lose there must win their remaining matches to reach the final.
Are playoff matches best of three or best of five?
Riot specifies best-of-three matches for the playoffs generally, with two exceptions: the lower-bracket final and the grand final are best of five.

A best-of-three can end after two maps if one team wins both; a best-of-five can end after three maps if one team wins the first three. The format sets the maximum series length, not a requirement to play every possible map.

What maps do Champions Shanghai teams play?
The official 2026 format materials establish series lengths, but do not specify the playoff map pool, pick-and-ban order, side selection, or any event-specific veto exceptions. As a result, they are not enough to give a reliable map list or step-by-step veto sequence. For those details, use current official event rules or the match broadcast graphics rather than assuming a procedure from another tournament or year.
What is known about the playoff draw?
Riot’s 2025 Champions Paris explainer said that event’s eight-team playoffs used a randomly seeded double-elimination bracket, with teams from the same group placed on opposite sides. That is historical context, not confirmation of the Champions Shanghai 2026 draw. The 2026 format materials cited here do not establish its seeding procedure.

Riot’s event explainer lists the playoff window as October 7–18, 2026. It schedules the lower-bracket final for October 17 and the grand final for October 18. The dates describe the published event schedule.
