For a standard UPI payment that debits your bank account, you approve the transaction with your UPI PIN in the payment app. The PIN is different from your bank’s mobile-banking MPIN. There is no single limit that applies to every UPI payment: the permitted amount depends on the payment’s purpose and type, the authentication method, and your bank or app’s own controls.
How UPI payment authentication works
UPI runs through a participating payment app linked to a bank account. NPCI describes device binding as the first authentication factor in the UPI ecosystem; changing your SIM, phone, or app may require registering again. For a standard payment debit, you enter a UPI PIN to approve it. NPCI’s UPI ecosystem description and UPI FAQ explain these roles.
UPI PIN and MPIN are different
A UPI PIN authorizes a UPI transaction from your linked account. An MPIN is a separate credential used for a bank’s mobile-banking service. Do not share your UPI PIN, and enter it only when you intend to send money. NPCI’s BHIM UPI Guidelines, updated June 4, 2026, say only sending money requires the PIN; you do not need to enter it to receive money or claim a reward.
Setting or resetting the PIN
NPCI’s 2026 BHIM guidelines describe setting or resetting a UPI PIN from the bank-account section of the app, using debit-card details and an OTP. An NPCI circular dated October 7, 2025 added UIDAI face authentication as an optional alternative to card credentials or Aadhaar OTP for this setup process. Available options depend on the app, bank, and device.

Optional biometric authentication
NPCI introduced on-device fingerprint or face authentication as an optional alternative to entering the UPI PIN. The October 2025 circular set an initial limit of ₹5,000 per transaction and specified compatibility and security checks, including restrictions for rooted or jailbroken phones and checks of biometric enrollment. NPCI’s circular index later listed OC-226A as an enhancement to the biometric limit, but the revised amount is not established here. Treat ₹5,000 as the initial cap in OC-226, not as a confirmed current cap.
UPI Lite and mandates are distinct cases
UPI Lite is a separate low-value mode, not a PIN-free setting for ordinary bank-account transfers. The RBI Annual Report 2023-24 describes payments up to ₹500 in that framework as possible without PIN authentication. Separately, NPCI’s October 2025 circular excludes mandate execution from its description of the standard PIN factor, so a recurring or mandate payment should not be assumed to prompt for a fresh PIN in the same way as a payment you initiate yourself.

What determines a UPI transaction limit?
A transaction can be below one published ceiling and still be declined because another applicable control is lower. Consider the payment type, purpose, merchant status, authentication method, and your bank or app’s rules together.
| Limit layer | What it means |
|---|---|
| General or category ceiling | RBI or NPCI rules may set a ceiling for a general payment or a specified purpose. Category-specific limits can differ. |
| Payment type and merchant status | Peer-to-peer payments and merchant payments do not necessarily share the same rules. Higher category limits can depend on the merchant being classified as a verified merchant. |
| Authentication mode | A limit attached to optional biometric authentication is distinct from the ceiling for a payment approved with a UPI PIN. |
| Bank or app controls | Your provider can set lower per-payment or daily amount limits, transaction-count limits, and restrictions related to first use or a device change. |
Why ₹1 lakh is not a universal current limit
The RBI’s August 8, 2024 announcement described ₹1 lakh per transaction as the then-normal UPI cap and raised tax payments to ₹5 lakh. It is a dated general reference, not a complete statement of every current category limit. The RBI separately raised the limit for hospital and educational institution payments from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh; its 2023 announcement and annual report document that change.

NPCI’s August 28, 2025 addendum introduced higher per-transaction ceilings for specified categories, subject to verified-merchant conditions. It also says member banks may set internal limits within NPCI’s ceilings; the higher category maximum is not automatically available for every merchant payment. The addendum leaves peer-to-peer limits under existing guidance.
NPCI’s FAQ also lists category figures such as up to ₹2 lakh for capital markets, collections, insurance, and foreign inward remittances, and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments. Those FAQ figures are historical category guidance; do not treat the list as a complete, current schedule without checking later NPCI circulars.

Why a payment can fail below a published ceiling
- Your bank or app limit is lower. NPCI ceilings do not prevent a bank from applying a lower amount or transaction-count cap. For example, Federal Bank’s published UPI guidance gives ₹1 lakh or 20 peer-to-peer transactions per account in 24 hours as that bank’s rule—not a universal UPI limit.
- The payment does not qualify for a category limit. A higher ceiling can require a particular payment purpose and, for relevant merchant categories, verified-merchant status.
- You have reached a daily amount or count threshold. Limits may apply across a time window, not just to one payment.
- The PIN was entered incorrectly. NPCI says a wrong PIN makes the transaction fail; repeated errors may temporarily block outgoing UPI payments, depending on the bank.
- Your account or device has a provider-specific restriction. First-use and SIM, phone, or app changes can involve additional registration or limits. Check the message in your UPI app and your bank’s current guidance.
To troubleshoot, check the payment purpose and merchant category, then review the limit and transaction-count rules in your own bank or app. If the PIN may be wrong, use the app’s PIN-reset process rather than repeatedly guessing it. For a newly changed device or SIM, follow the app’s re-registration instructions.
Which limit should you check?
- Identify the payment. Determine whether it is peer-to-peer or merchant, and whether it is for a specifically covered purpose such as tax, hospital, education, or an investment category.
- Check eligibility for a higher category cap. For applicable merchant payments, confirm that the merchant is treated as verified under NPCI’s rules.
- Confirm the authentication method. A biometric-authenticated payment may have a separate cap from a PIN-authenticated payment. Do not assume the original ₹5,000 biometric cap remains current: a later NPCI amendment is indexed.
- Check your bank or app. Confirm the per-payment and daily amount limits, transaction-count limits, and any first-use or device-change rules. These controls can be lower than an NPCI ceiling.
- Use the current rule for the date of payment. Limits change. Check the latest NPCI circular and your provider’s current instructions rather than relying on an old general figure.
Common UPI authentication and limit questions
Do I need a UPI PIN to receive money?
No. You do not enter your UPI PIN to receive money; the PIN approves a payment debit. Be wary of anyone asking for it to release funds or a reward.

Is a UPI PIN the same as an MPIN?
No. A UPI PIN approves UPI payments from a linked bank account. An MPIN is a separate credential for a bank’s mobile-banking app.
Can I use my fingerprint instead of my UPI PIN?
NPCI introduced optional on-device biometric authentication, subject to app, bank, device, and security support. The initial cap was ₹5,000 per transaction in October 2025; a later amendment is indexed, and its revised amount is not established here.
What happens if I enter the wrong UPI PIN?
The transaction fails. Repeated incorrect entries may temporarily block outgoing UPI payments, depending on your bank.
