Transcribing eyeglasses put conversation captions in the wearer’s view by using a phone microphone to capture speech, a companion app to process it, and a tiny projector in the glasses to display the resulting text. In a July 2, 2025 report, WIRED described TranscribeGlass, a captioning device designed especially for Deaf and hard-of-hearing people.
How the glasses turn speech into captions
- A phone captures nearby speech. The phone’s microphone picks up the conversation; the glasses themselves were reported to have no microphone, camera, or speaker.
- A companion app processes the audio. WIRED reported that the iOS app handled most of the computing. That describes support at the time of its July 2025 report, not confirmed current compatibility.
- The glasses display the text. A small waveguide projector places the resulting captions in the wearer’s field of view, so the wearer can read speech without relying on lip-reading.
The device is intended to make spoken conversation more accessible, including in noisy settings. It is a captioning tool: it displays recognized speech rather than translating conversation into sign language.

How the captions performed in WIRED’s demonstration
At a demonstration in a busy San Francisco coworking space, WIRED reporter Boone Ashworth found that most transcription was grammatically correct and that the system displayed speaker labels. He also found the captions could arrive too quickly to read comfortably, while some text looked grainy or was difficult to focus on. This was one reporter’s account, not a controlled test of transcription accuracy or readability.

Features, alternatives, and what remains unknown
WIRED described live captioning as available in the product at the time of publication. Translation and tone analysis were described as in testing or development; translation had not yet reached customers. Founder Madhav Lavakare said the experimental translation work aimed at sign-language-like syntax, noting that “Sign language grammar is actually very different than English grammar.” That comment does not establish that automated sign-language translation is accurate or available.
WIRED also named Even Realities and XRAI as alternatives with broader features, including directions or chatbot interaction. The report does not provide a sufficiently comparable set of current specifications to rank these products. For any device, useful checks include where speech is captured and processed, whether your phone is supported, how captions are positioned and adjusted, how readable they are in your environment, battery life, and total cost including recurring fees.

WIRED reported a price of around $377 for TranscribeGlass frames plus $20 per month for the transcription service in July 2025. Those are historical reported prices, not a current quote.
