On an iPad, you can use Apple Pencil to enter text in Google Docs through Apple’s Scribble feature: tap the document’s edit area and handwrite in the text field, and Scribble converts your writing to typed text on supported iPads. Google Docs does not have a separate Apple Pencil writing mode in the instructions cited here.
Write editable text with Apple Pencil
This method uses iPadOS Scribble to enter ordinary text in a Google document. It is different from adding a drawing or marking up the page.

Open the Google Docs app on your iPad and sign in. Google says the app can create, view, and edit Google documents and Microsoft Word files on iPad. Google Docs: Get started with Google Docs.

Open the document, tap Edit, then tap where you want the text to appear. Google’s iPad editing instructions.

Write in the text field with Apple Pencil. Apple describes Scribble as converting handwriting entered in a text field to typed text on supported iPad models. Apple: Enter text with Scribble on iPad.
The result is regular document text you can edit with the keyboard or Pencil-supported text entry. Scribble is an Apple system feature, not a Google Docs-only mode, and available actions can vary by app.

Confirm that your iPad model, iPadOS version, and language support Scribble. Apple’s guide describes the feature for supported devices but does not provide a complete model-by-model compatibility list in the cited material.

Return to Docs and tap directly in the editable text field before writing. Scribble works in text fields; it does not mean that Pencil strokes anywhere on the document page become text.
Choose the right workflow for drawing or review

Can you annotate directly over a Google Docs page?
The cited material does not establish a Google Docs-specific Apple Pencil mode for writing directly over a document page. A Google Docs community product expert said in February 2026 that markup was unavailable in the iOS app, but that is secondary guidance rather than a formal or permanent Google specification. If you need feedback on text, Suggest changes is the documented alternative; if you need handwriting as a visible object, the drawing workflow is distinct from page markup.
