Effective AI video prompts describe a shot the model can interpret: what is visible, what moves, and how the camera sees it. Start with one clear action, add framing and any important camera movement, then specify visual style and atmosphere. Generate a clip, inspect what went wrong, and revise the relevant detail rather than piling on more ideas.
What to put in an AI video prompt
Think in shots, not magic phrases. A practical checklist is:
- Framing and camera: Say whether the shot is wide, medium, or close, and name the camera angle or movement when it matters.
- Subject and setting: Identify the main subject and where the shot takes place.
- Action: Describe one visible, plausible thing the subject does.
- Environment: Include relevant motion or details in the surroundings.
- Visual treatment: Specify a style, lighting, or mood when those choices help define the result.
This is a checklist, not a mandatory order. Runway says there is no strict prompt formula and that clarity matters more than ordering or word count; Adobe’s guide offers a structured sequence as a useful starting point for beginners. Example: turn a scene into a shot description
As an illustrative template, not a tested prompt: “Medium shot, eye-level camera slowly tracks beside a red bicycle as a rider crosses a rain-darkened city plaza at dusk. Reflections shimmer on the pavement; cool blue ambient light with warm shop windows; quiet documentary mood.”

The prompt gives the generator a subject, setting, action, framing, camera move, lighting, and mood. You can shorten it if some details do not matter; the aim is a legible shot, not maximum length.
How to describe motion and camera movement
Describe movement explicitly. A still description such as “a cyclist in a plaza” says what is present but not what should happen. Add the subject’s action, and, where relevant, motion in the environment and movement of the camera. Runway’s Gen-4 guide separates subject, scene, and camera motion; OpenAI’s Sora 2 guide recommends one clear subject action and one clear camera move per shot.

Keep each shot focused. A subject performing several unrelated actions while the camera pans, zooms, and circles can create competing directions. Make camera direction observable
Use terms that describe what the viewer sees: for example, “eye-level medium shot” for framing and angle, or “camera slowly tracks beside the rider” for movement. If the camera should remain still, say so when that distinction is important to the shot. Avoid adding camera directions that do not serve the action.

Write differently for text-to-video and image-to-video
Text-to-video
For text-to-video, the prompt usually needs to establish both the scene’s appearance and its motion. Runway’s current text-to-video guide is optimized for Gen-4.5 and identifies visual and motion descriptions as essential. Begin with the details that define the shot; add other elements only when they clarify the intended result. Runway text-to-video guide.
Image-to-video
When an input image already establishes the subject, composition, color, lighting, and style, use the text prompt mainly to describe what should move or change. Reference frames and continuations
Some systems provide controls beyond a single text prompt. Google’s Veo 3.1 documentation describes image inputs as initial-frame guidance, first-and-last-frame inputs to define beginning and ending compositions, and a continuation prompt for extending a generated clip. These are features of supported workflows, not universal prompt-writing rules; check whether your chosen product and version offer them. Google Veo developer documentation.

- Identify the mismatch. Is the framing wrong, the action weak or unclear, the motion confusing, the style inconsistent, or an unwanted detail appearing?
- Change the matching part of the prompt. Adjust framing if the shot is composed incorrectly; clarify the action if it is hard to follow; refine style or lighting if the visual treatment is off.
- Generate again and compare. Keep the parts that are working stable so you can tell whether the change helped.
Make one important change at a time where practical. This makes iteration easier to evaluate than rewriting every instruction at once. Keep prompt prose separate from generator controls
Some settings may be selected outside the prompt. OpenAI’s Sora 2 API guide describes model, output size, and clip duration as explicit API parameters, while prompt text directs content such as subject, motion, lighting, and style. That guide is marked archived and may not reflect current controls, so check the current interface or API documentation for the product you use. OpenAI Sora 2 Prompting Guide.
How to compare prompt approaches fairly
If you are testing different wording or tools, keep the scene goal stable. Hold the subject, action, and style constant while changing one variable, such as framing or camera direction. The official materials cited here explain individual products and prompting practices; they do not provide a controlled cross-vendor performance comparison, so they are not a basis for ranking generators.
A storyboard or simple shot outline can help organize actions before prompting, but it is optional. OpenAI’s Sora guide compares a clear shot prompt to sketching it on a storyboard and recommends specifying framing and action beats.
