An effective abandoned-cart email reminds a shopper what they left behind, answers a real question that might be stopping them, and takes them back to the right cart or checkout. Start with the event your email platform can actually track, then build a short flow that stops when the customer buys. A discount is optional—not a requirement.
First, define what “abandoned cart” means in your flow
The label can describe different events. A flow might start when someone adds an item to a cart, or later when they begin checkout and leave without placing an order. Klaviyo treats “Added to Cart” and “Started Checkout” as distinct triggers in its abandoned cart flow guidance. Shopify’s checkout recovery documentation concerns abandoned checkouts.
Before writing, confirm which event your platform receives, what shopper and product details accompany it, and how quickly the event syncs. Those details determine who qualifies and whether the message can name the product or link to a usable checkout. Do not promise a personalized reminder if the trigger provides no reliable cart data.
How do I write an abandoned cart email?
Keep the message focused on one next step: returning to the original purchase. A useful email usually has four parts.
#1 Best Overall
- An accurate subject line. Make clear that the email is a reminder or checkout follow-up. Avoid false urgency or a subject that implies an offer when none exists.
- A specific reminder. Name the item or show its image when the platform has accurate cart data. A generic “you forgot something” is less useful than a reminder tied to the actual product.
- A helpful answer. Address a plausible barrier—such as shipping, returns, sizing, product details, or payment—only when you can state the store’s policy or facts accurately.
- A prominent return link. Use a clear button such as “Return to your checkout” and verify that it opens the relevant cart or checkout, rather than a generic landing page.
Example: first reminder
Subject: Still thinking about
You left
Button: Return to your cart
Example: follow-up that answers a real concern
Subject: Questions about
Still deciding? [Accurate answer about delivery, returns, fit, or another relevant detail.] Your checkout is ready if you’d like to continue.
Button: Continue checkout
Replace bracketed text only with information the store can stand behind. If you include a discount, state its actual terms and expiry. Do not invent a deadline or claim an item is scarce unless that is true.

When should I send an abandoned cart email?
Treat timing and message count as starting hypotheses, not universal rules. Shopify’s 2026 guide to abandoned-cart emails gives an example of a first reminder after two to four hours, followed by another after 24 to 48 hours. Klaviyo says its analysis across thousands of ecommerce customers supports testing a sequence of two to three messages. Neither recommendation establishes one best schedule for every store.
Check event-sync timing before choosing a very short delay. Klaviyo notes that some integrations sync checkout events only once an hour and recommends a delay of at least 1 hour and 15 minutes when a short wait is needed to accommodate differing sync times. Your integration may behave differently, so confirm its actual interval.
Make the message useful rather than automatically discounting
A discount can help when price is a genuine obstacle, but it can also give away margin to customers who would have bought anyway. Shopify’s 2026 guide attributes these reported abandonment reasons to Baymard Institute: extra checkout costs, 40%; slow delivery estimates, 20%; distrust in submitting payment information, 19%; forced account creation, 18%; and a long or complicated checkout, 17%. These are reported reasons, not a diagnosis of why any particular customer left.
Rank #3
Use the most relevant truthful response your store can provide. If delivery cost is the concern, explain shipping charges or options clearly. If a shopper may be unsure about fit, link to accurate sizing guidance. If you test an incentive, compare it against a no-discount version and measure completed orders and revenue—not just clicks.

Build in purchase and availability checks
A recovery flow should stop being relevant when the shopper completes the order. Shopify says its recovery email links back to checkout and considers a checkout recovered if the customer completes the order, whether through that link or independently. Its documentation also describes sending exclusions, including a sale completed before the scheduled recovery email and products that are unavailable.
Configure purchase suppression and product-availability handling wherever your platform supports them. Test the flow end to end: place a test order after entering the trigger, confirm later messages are suppressed, and check that an unavailable item does not produce a misleading reminder. Platform-specific conditions differ, so verify the rules for the automation you use.
Test the flow and measure orders, not just opens or clicks
Start with a simple flow, then change one meaningful element at a time: the delay, number of messages, subject or copy, offer, personalization, or channel order. Track delivered messages, clicks, completed orders, and revenue per recipient together; a click is not a recovered sale.
Klaviyo’s 2026 abandoned-cart benchmark report, published October 2, 2026, says its product analytics team analyzed more than 110,000 Klaviyo customers across industries. It reports a 6% average click rate and 11.3% for the top 10%, plus average revenue per recipient of $6.77 and $13.70 for the top 10%. These are Klaviyo customer benchmarks, not guaranteed results or an independent forecast for your store. Use them as context while judging your own flow against its prior performance.

Choose an implementation that matches your tracking and controls
Shopify documents native checkout recovery, including its return-to-checkout link and conditions that can prevent a scheduled message from sending. Klaviyo documents separate event triggers and customizable flows, with event timing dependent in part on the integration. Shopify also names third-party tools such as Omnisend as examples. Compare actual capabilities for your store rather than assuming one platform is universally best.
Best Value
- Can it track the event you need, and how long can the event take to arrive?
- Can it personalize using available cart or checkout data and branch based on behavior?
- Can it suppress messages after purchase and account for product availability?
- Does reporting connect clicks to completed orders and revenue?
- Can you manage sending exclusions and the compliance processes required for your recipients?
Follow the email rules that apply to your recipients
Requirements vary by jurisdiction and message circumstances. In the United States, the FTC’s CAN-SPAM compliance guide says commercial email must use accurate sender information and truthful subject lines, identify advertising, include a valid physical postal address and a clear opt-out method, and honor opt-out requests within 10 business days. The FTC also says using an email vendor does not transfer the sender’s legal responsibility. A recovery email is not automatically exempt as transactional; its treatment depends on its content and circumstances.
For recipients elsewhere, check the rules that apply in their location. Shopify’s 2026 guide discusses EU ePrivacy consent requirements and Canada’s CASL alongside U.S. CAN-SPAM; a U.S.-only checklist is not a global compliance assessment.
