If that option is unavailable, connect the iPhone to a Mac or Windows PC and restore it in recovery mode using the button sequence for your model. If its buttons prevent recovery mode, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Erasing is irreversible, so check whether you need data on the phone before proceeding.
Choose the erase method that fits your iPhone

The remote route avoids using the iPhone’s screen, but depends on Find My having been set up already. The computer route does not require a usable display for the restore itself, but does require a computer connection and functioning controls to enter recovery mode.
Before you erase: check whether you need the data
Apple warns that “Erasing your device can’t be undone.” Apple Support If you want information stored on the phone, consider whether an existing backup is available before you continue. Apple documents how to restore an iPhone from an existing iCloud or computer backup; a backup’s existence or completeness cannot be assumed.
Erase remotely with Find My
- On another Apple device, open Find My and select the unavailable iPhone, or go to iCloud.com Find Devices.
- Choose the option to erase the iPhone and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If the iPhone is offline, treat the erase as pending. It will take effect only after the device reconnects to Wi-Fi or cellular service.
Remote erase leaves Activation Lock on. The Apple Account associated with the iPhone is still required to reactivate it; erasing does not remove that lock. Apple notes that if two-factor authentication is not enabled, remote erase using the Find My app is unavailable and directs users to iCloud.com or to enable two-factor authentication. Restore the iPhone in recovery mode using a computer
This is a factory restore, not a reset through the iPhone’s Settings screen. It removes information and settings and installs the latest iOS. Apple says this restore does not delete the eSIM. Apple’s factory restore instructions
- Connect the iPhone to a Mac or Windows PC with a compatible data cable.
- Open Finder on a Mac, or Apple Devices on a Windows PC. Select the connected iPhone when it appears.
- Put the iPhone into recovery mode using the button sequence for its generation. Keep holding the required buttons until the recovery-mode screen appears; a black or damaged display may make it difficult to tell when this happens. Apple’s model-specific instructions are at Apple’s recovery-mode guide.
- When Finder or Apple Devices offers the choice, choose Restore. This erases the iPhone and reinstalls iOS.
Use the sequence for your iPhone generation
Apple provides different recovery-mode button sequences for iPhones with Face ID; iPhone 8 and iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation); iPhone 7; and iPhone 6s, earlier models, and iPhone SE (1st generation). Identify your iPhone generation and follow the matching sequence in Apple’s instructions rather than assuming one button combination works for every model.

If the restore or recovery-mode attempt stalls
- If a software download takes longer than 15 minutes and the iPhone exits recovery mode, let the download finish, then enter recovery mode again and continue. This is Apple’s procedural guidance, not a guarantee of how long an erase will take. Apple recovery-mode instructions
- If the physical buttons do not respond well enough to enter recovery mode, Apple says service may be needed. You can also visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider if you do not have a computer.
What to expect after erasing
A computer restore erases information and settings and installs iOS, but does not delete the eSIM. A remote erase leaves Activation Lock in place, so the Apple Account is needed to reactivate the phone. Neither method should be treated as a way to bypass account security. If you need the phone’s data, rely on an existing backup only if one is available and suitable for restoring it.
