There is no verified, guaranteed winning strategy for Chronicles: Medieval yet: the game is still in development, and its battle systems and balance can change. But the announced mechanics point to a clear approach: plan your deployment, give units sensible opening orders and follow-up behavior, use specialist formations for the job they are designed to do, and intervene before morale or a flank collapses. You can also fight directly in third person, but the game’s battles combine personal combat with army command and can be auto-resolved.

What to do before a battle

Most battles start with a planning phase. You deploy your troops within a zone opposite the enemy and configure three things: battle lines, initial orders, and standing orders. Small fights with only a few followers may skip this phase.

Set battle lines around the force you have

The broad deployment areas are Vanguard, Middle Guard, Rearguard, and Flanks. Unit type and culture influence where troops begin, and you can adjust those placements during deployment. Raw Power Games gives French heavy cavalry in the Vanguard, English longbowmen on the Flanks, and a dense Vanguard and Middle Guard for Holy Roman Empire forces as examples of the described behavior—not universal recommendations for every battle.

Pair an opening move with a follow-up behavior

An initial order tells a unit what to do first, such as sending cavalry around a flank, moving longbowmen to a ridge, or placing spearmen on a hilltop to hold it. A standing order determines what that unit does after its opening task is complete:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Aggressive: seeks visible enemies.
  • Defensive: holds position when an enemy appears.
  • Versatile: uses its judgment and may adopt a specialized formation when the situation calls for one.

This distinction matters: an opening destination is not necessarily what the unit will keep doing once it arrives.

Which formations should you use?

Choose a formation for the job and timing, not because one is best in every matchup. The developers describe the following roles and drawbacks; they have not published final balance data that would support a universal ranking.

Formation Described purpose Trade-off or timing
Line Broad, mobile formation for maneuver. Not intended to win a direct clash against a committed specialist formation.
Block Tighter and deeper, with more staying power. Like Line, it is a flexible base formation rather than a guaranteed answer to a specialist.
Loose Spreads ranged troops, reducing their exposure to arrows and charging cavalry. Useful for spacing ranged units; it is not described as a direct-clash winning formation.
Shield Wall Holds ground. Forming up takes time, so avoid leaving the switch until the last moment.
Spear Wall Moves very slowly; account for that when choosing where to form it.
Square Provides defense in all directions. Maneuvers poorly.
Skein Sets up a shock cavalry charge. Needs time to reform after charging.
Wedge Tries to punch through a line. Its job is a breakthrough, not general-purpose movement.

The battle diary recommends moving in a flexible base formation and changing to a specialist formation as contact approaches. Since forming up takes time, switching repeatedly without a specific reason can leave a unit poorly prepared. [Raw Power Games’ battle diary]

How to manage the battle while it is happening

You can fight on foot or horseback in third person, then switch into Command Mode to direct the army. The developer says Command Mode slows time but does not stop it, so orders and battlefield changes still matter while you are issuing commands.

Use broad orders for the army and local orders for a unit

Global orders include Advance, Hold, Fallback, Engage, Charge, and Retreat. Local orders give more control over a selected unit, including its movement, target, facing, and standing order. A practical interpretation of these controls is to fight directly when your character can make a useful intervention, then use Command Mode when you need to redirect a unit, respond to a bending flank, or close a gap in the line. This is a way to apply the announced systems, not a tested winning sequence.

Keep morale and the commander in view

Morale has five described states: Inspired, Confident, Concerned, Wavering, and Broken. Casualties, a charge—especially one hitting a flank—and a friendly unit breaking can lower morale. A Broken unit routs and, in the current design description, cannot be reformed during that battle.

The commander’s fall causes a large, one-time morale penalty across the army. That makes an unsupported personal charge a risk to the whole force, not just to the character you control. Watch for exposed flanks and morale warnings, and avoid risking the commander without a clear purpose.

Rout, retreat and ending a battle

A rout and a retreat are different. A routed unit has broken and fled; the current design says it is lost for that battle. A retreat is an ordered withdrawal, which may also begin automatically if the army drops below a strength threshold. Retreating units remain with the army and can fight again.

A victory or defeat notice does not necessarily end the battle immediately. The fight may continue, allowing you to cover a withdrawal, pursue defeated enemies, or choose to end the engagement.

When to auto-resolve instead

The official FAQ says battles can be auto-resolved. Raw Power Games intends the outcomes to be plausible, while noting they may be less efficient than the choices of an experienced commander. The developer has not disclosed a specific auto-resolve formula. Manual control is therefore an option for shaping the battle, not a proven requirement for victory. What Mount & Blade-style direct combat involves

The direct-combat layer is intended to support optional lock-on and motion-warping, which can help close a small gap or correct a slightly off-target position. The FAQ also describes character and NPC progression from novice toward more advanced techniques. It calls polearms important to medieval warfare but does not yet provide a complete set of weapon details.

In a Gamescom preview published October 4, 2026, TechRadar reporter Tom Regan observed posture meters and timed parries and quoted Senior Game Designer Gareth Bourn: “When you start out, you have low proficiency, so your attacks are slower, and you don’t have combos.” Regan also reported that Bourn said skills, including leadership skills, unlock over time. These are preview observations and attributed comments, not a final combat specification. [TechRadar’s October 4, 2026 preview]

Raw Power’s combat-design announcement describes Energy as governing endurance for attacking, blocking, or moving, and Posture as balance and stability under pressure; losing too much posture can cause a stagger or broken guard. The developers say they are moving away from directional fighting toward readable swings, clear feedback, timing, and consequence. Those terms and implementations are explicitly provisional: the announcement says the names may change and the system is work in progress. [Raw Power Games’ combat announcement]

Battle size and development status

Raw Power Games’ September 10, 2026 Steam announcement described a Gamescom presentation showing 500 versus 500 troops and called the footage work in progress. The developer’s detailed battle diary describes 1,000 versus 1,000 as an ambition it is not ready to commit to. A TechRadar preview reported a battlefield supporting up to 2,000 total troops, but that should not be treated as a confirmed final maximum in light of the developer’s later caveat. The same September announcement said battles were still being balanced and cavalry charges and melee combat refined, and gave early 2027 as the planned Early Access timing.
