You can watch Jupiter disappear behind the Moon on October 6, 2026, if the occultation is visible from your location. For a pre-dawn view, your eyes alone are enough; binoculars or a telescope are optional. First check the event’s local circumstances: outside the narrow path where the Moon passes in front of Jupiter, you will see a close pairing instead. Daylight observers need extra caution because optics must never be pointed near the Sun without proper solar-safe equipment.
What happens during a lunar occultation?
A lunar occultation is a line-of-sight event: from certain places, the Moon moves in front of a more distant object and hides it. During this event, the Moon’s edge gradually covers Jupiter; later, Jupiter emerges from the opposite edge. The exact timing and appearance depend on where you observe from.
The October 6 event is expected to be visible from parts of North America, the Caribbean, and Africa. If your location is outside the occultation path, the Moon and Jupiter may appear close together without Jupiter disappearing behind the Moon. See ESO’s explanation of a Jupiter occultation.
How to find the time for your location
Use the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s Local Prediction of Lunar Occultation of Planet tool to select your observing place and check whether the occultation is visible, along with local contact times. Recheck near the event date: predictions are location-specific, and weather, the horizon, and local sunrise can affect what you see.

The October 6 guide describes a pre-dawn view from eastern North America and the Caribbean, and late-morning to early-afternoon circumstances in Africa. Its selected local examples are below; all times are local and are not a schedule for nearby places.
| Location | Example local time |
|---|---|
| Toronto | 4:25–5:21 a.m. |
| Washington, D.C. | 4:20–5:23 a.m. |
| New York City | 4:22–5:26 a.m. |
| Chicago | 3:21–4:16 a.m. |
| Winnipeg | 3:43–4:02 a.m. |
| Miami | 4:20–5:08 a.m. |
For one more specific example, a NASA Night Sky Network listing for Virginia Beach gives Europa’s first contact at 4:14 a.m. EDT, Jupiter’s first contact around 4:20 a.m., Jupiter beginning to emerge at 5:24 a.m., and full reappearance at 5:26 a.m. on October 6. At the start, the listing places the target about 17 degrees above the horizon at azimuth 084 degrees, so a clear, unobstructed horizon matters there. These times and directions apply to Virginia Beach, not North America as a whole.

What you will see
With your eyes
In the pre-dawn visibility region, Jupiter appears as a bright point near the waning crescent Moon. If the occultation is visible from your site, you can watch the point vanish at the lunar edge and return later. Your location’s event geometry, the horizon, weather, and sunrise determine how much of the sequence is observable.

Optics can make the sequence easier to follow. They may show Jupiter’s disk and its four largest moons—the Galilean satellites—approaching and passing behind the lunar edge at different times. In the event guide’s New York City example, Europa, Callisto, Io, Jupiter’s main body, and Ganymede meet the Moon’s limb in sequence; Jupiter’s main body takes about 65 seconds to be covered there. That duration is specific to the New York example, not a universal timing.

Choose equipment to suit the view
You do not need to buy equipment for a favorable pre-dawn view. NASA’s skywatching guidance puts it simply: “You don’t have to have any special gear for skywatching.”
| Option | What it offers | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Unaided eyes | The broad spectacle of Jupiter disappearing and returning. | Shows less detail than optics. |
| Binoculars | A wider, closer view of the pairing; with a steady mount, they can help show Jupiter’s four largest moons. | Hand shake can make viewing harder; a tripod can improve steadiness. |
| Telescope | A closer view for planetary detail. | Narrower field of view and more setup than the unaided view. |
For this event, local visibility and safe observing conditions matter more than magnification. NASA’s recommendation that magnification of 7 or more helps with lunar terrain is general lunar sightseeing advice, not a requirement for watching Jupiter’s occultation. For broader equipment guidance, see NASA Science’s skywatching tips.

Observe safely, especially in daylight
A pre-dawn view of the Moon and Jupiter is not solar observing. Some locations, however, encounter the event in daylight, when keeping the Sun out of an instrument’s field of view is critical. NASA JPL warns: “Never point binoculars, a telescope, or a camera near the Sun unless you’re using proper solar-safe equipment.” Looking at or near the Sun through optics can cause serious eye injury.
- Do not point binoculars, a telescope, or a camera near the Sun without proper solar-safe equipment.
- Do not treat ordinary sunglasses, camera filters, or an unfiltered instrument as protection against solar exposure; never improvise a filter.
- If you cannot reliably keep the Sun out of the optical path during a daylight attempt, do not use optics.
NASA JPL’s solar-viewing safety guidance explains the risk. The event guide places the Moon and Jupiter about 52 degrees west of the Sun for its described circumstances, but that does not remove the need for safe alignment—particularly when using optics.
