For a first watch, watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies in theatrical release order. That keeps the films’ original reveal sequence intact. For a rewatch centered on when events happen inside the story, use Marvel’s separate timeline-order presentation on Disney+ instead.
Which MCU movie order should you choose?
| Your goal | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Watching the films for the first time | Theatrical release order | Preserves the sequence audiences originally saw, including the films’ reveals. |
| Rewatching to follow in-universe chronology | Marvel’s timeline order | Organizes titles by story chronology; check Marvel’s current presentation because the timeline can change. |
Marvel presents timeline order as an option, not a required way to watch. Its October 23, 2023 article links to Marvel Studios in Timeline Order on Disney+ and describes the companion book Marvel Studios: The Marvel Cinematic Universe An Official Timeline as an illustrated guide created with Marvel Studios.
How to watch the MCU movies in theatrical release order
For a first viewing, follow the films’ original theatrical release sequence rather than rearranging them by the dates of events inside the story. This approach avoids disrupting reveals that were designed for audiences encountering the movies as released.
The sources available for this guide do not establish a complete, current film-by-film release list, so this article does not invent one. Use a current film release listing to build the movie sequence, and keep the chosen order consistent. Do not treat a list of Marvel titles as a movie list: Marvel’s catalog includes different kinds of programs, not only MCU films.

How to find Marvel’s MCU timeline order
- Open Marvel’s official timeline article.
- Follow its link to the Marvel Studios timeline-order collection on Disney+.
- Use that collection for a chronology-focused rewatch, and verify the current lineup there rather than relying on an old third-party list.
Marvel announced its companion illustrated reference book, Marvel Studios: The Marvel Cinematic Universe An Official Timeline, on October 23, 2023. Marvel describes it as available wherever books are sold; current price and stock depend on the retailer.
Where does Captain America: The First Avenger fit?
That is a question about in-universe chronology, not release order. To place it precisely, consult Marvel’s current timeline-order collection on Disney+; the available sources for this guide do not verify its exact position, so no placement is asserted here.

Are TV series and specials part of this movie order?
No. This guide is limited to MCU movies. Marvel’s program catalog includes series and other formats, so a broader MCU watchlist should label those separately rather than silently inserting them into a movie sequence. The catalog itself can change over time: Marvel’s December 17, 2020 streaming list is historical and should not be treated as a current catalog.

Where can you stream the movies?
Marvel points viewers to Disney+ for its timeline-order presentation, but that does not establish that every MCU movie is currently available there in every country. Streaming rights and catalogs vary by region and change over time. Check the service’s current catalog in your country for each film before planning a watch-through.
