You can watch ESPN on Apple TV (4th generation and later), but owning the device does not unlock live networks or games. To watch live content, sign in through an eligible TV or video provider—or use an ESPN subscription such as ESPN Unlimited—and make sure your plan includes the event. ESPN’s device list does not specify a minimum tvOS version or model numbers. ESPN lists supported devices.
What you need to watch ESPN on Apple TV
ESPN lists Apple TV (4th generation and later) as a supported device. You also need an eligible way to access the content:
- TV or video provider: Authenticate in the ESPN app with the account for a provider whose package includes the network or event.
- ESPN subscription: ESPN says ESPN Unlimited subscribers can sign in with the account tied to that subscription. The sources cited here do not establish its current price or complete event coverage.
Authentication verifies an account; it does not add channels or event rights that the provider package or subscription does not include. ESPN says viewers without an affiliated video provider have access to ESPN.com video-on-demand clips only on Apple TV. See ESPN’s live-streaming access guidance.

How to sign in with your TV provider
- Open the ESPN app on Apple TV and select a live event. ESPN’s connected-device instructions use a live ACC Network or ACC Network Extra (ACCNX) event to start provider authentication.
- When the app shows an activation code, use a phone or computer to go to espn.com/activate and enter the code displayed on your TV.
- Choose your TV provider, then sign in with that provider account’s username and password. These credentials are separate from your ESPN account login.
- After authentication, return to the ESPN app. You can watch content available through your subscription; access still depends on the package’s included programming.
ESPN’s provider sign-in instructions were updated September 30, 2026. The app’s current Apple TV menus and exact navigation labels are not specified there, so menu names may differ.

How to find and stream a game
Once signed in, choose the live event you want in the ESPN app. If it will not play, check whether your provider and specific package include the network or event. Successful sign-in alone does not guarantee access to every ESPN stream.
ESPN describes live access as depending on an affiliated TV or internet provider or an OTT subscription experience. Its access guidance explains that Apple TV users without an affiliated video provider have access to ESPN.com video-on-demand clips only.

Choose the sign-in route that matches your subscription
| Access route | Account used to sign in | What determines access |
|---|---|---|
| TV or video provider | The username and password for the provider account, entered after activation. | The provider and package must include the network or event you want. |
| ESPN Unlimited | The account tied to the ESPN Unlimited subscription. | The subscription must provide the content you want. Current pricing and comprehensive event-by-event coverage are not established by the cited sources. |
ESPN describes these sign-in routes in its provider sign-in guidance. Check the plan’s current terms for a particular event rather than assuming either route includes all ESPN programming.

The activation code does not work

You are using the wrong credentials
Provider authentication requires the provider account’s username and password—not simply your ESPN login. If you subscribe to ESPN Unlimited, use the account tied to that subscription instead.
The app still shows your previous provider
If you recently changed providers, open the ESPN app’s TV Provider settings and select the current provider. ESPN says the app may remain linked to the old one after a switch. See its provider sign-in help.

You are signed in, but the event is unavailable
Check whether the provider and your particular package include that event or its network. Authentication confirms the account; it does not expand the subscription’s programming rights.
The app asks you to sign in again
ESPN says you usually do not need to re-enter your details every time, although some providers require periodic re-verification. Its sign-in frequency guidance explains this exception.

ESPN’s SharePlay documentation, updated August 4, 2026, says SharePlay is available on iPhone and iPad, while tvOS and Mac are not supported at that time. The documentation describes moving playback to Apple TV from picture-in-picture; it does not describe starting SharePlay directly on Apple TV.
