Wool-care advice applies only when the sweater’s fiber content and label make it appropriate; a wool sweater is not automatically machine-washable.
Check the care label before washing
Care instructions depend on a sweater’s fibers, construction, and finish. The garment label—not a general rule for wool or knitwear—determines whether it can be machine-washed, hand-washed, or should be dry-cleaned. The Federal Trade Commission explains the U.S. care-labeling rule for textile apparel in its care-labeling guidance.
- If the label permits machine washing, use the cycle and water temperature it specifies.
- If it says hand wash, do not substitute a machine cycle.
- If it says dry clean, follow that direction rather than experimenting with water.
Woolmark’s recommendations below apply to wool garments and should be used only when the sweater’s care claim allows the method.
Wash wool sweaters gently when the label allows it
Machine-washable wool
Turn the sweater inside out or place it in a fine-mesh laundry bag, add a mild, neutral wool detergent, and select the wool cycle. If the machine has no wool setting, Woolmark advises using cold water or a delicates cycle. A laundry bag is optional protection, not a substitute for the care label. Hand-wash-only wool
Turn the garment inside out and wash it in clean, lukewarm water with mild detergent. Woolmark’s general method is to let it soak for 10 minutes, handle it gently without rubbing or wringing, then rinse thoroughly—first with lukewarm water and then with cold water. Follow the garment’s label if it gives different directions. The full method is in Woolmark’s guide to washing wool.
Choose detergent and wash frequency sensibly
Use a mild, neutral detergent suited to the label; a specialty wool detergent is relevant for washable wool, but not every sweater needs one. Woolmark notes that wool resists odors, stains, and creasing, so it may need less frequent washing. Wash according to the garment’s label and actual wear, soil, or odor rather than a fixed schedule.

Dry knitwear flat and reshape it
After washing, support the sweater’s weight instead of hanging it: wet knitwear can stretch out of shape. Lay it flat on a clean, pale or white towel, gently return it to its natural shape, and let it air-dry in the shade. A flat mesh drying screen can help with airflow, but it is optional. Woolmark’s sweater-drying guidance advises against line-drying or hanging wet knitwear.
Keep wool away from direct sunlight and direct heat, including a radiator. Do not assume every wool garment must avoid the tumble dryer: some may be tumble-dried if the care claim permits it, using low heat or a wool/delicates setting. Woolmark states: “After washing your wool sweater, it is recommended the sweater is carefully dried flat, unless your sweater’s care claim states it can be tumble dried.”

Fold sweaters for everyday and seasonal storage
Fold sweaters rather than hanging them; a hanger can pull a knit out of shape. Before putting them away for the season, make sure they are clean and completely dry. The American Cleaning Institute’s sweater-care guidance notes that some soils attract insects and hidden stains can darken over time.

Clothes moths feed on animal-derived materials, including wool. Food stains and body oils can attract them, so clean wool garments before long-term storage. For a moth barrier, Woolmark recommends placing clean wool in an airtight bag or container; Penn State Extension also advises cleaning infested textiles and using airtight storage. Sealed storage is an option for wool when moth exclusion matters, not a universal requirement for every sweater. The American Cleaning Institute recommends a cool, dark, dry, well-ventilated storage area and cautions that plastic bags or bins can trap moisture. Keep garments fully dry and the storage space clean and dry; do not put moth repellent directly on the clothing.

A quick decision check before putting a sweater away
- Read the care label and identify the fiber content.
- Wash only by a method the label permits; for washable wool, use a gentle wool or cold/delicates cycle, or hand-wash if required.
- Reshape the garment and dry it flat, away from direct heat and sunlight, unless the label permits tumble drying.
- Store it folded, clean, and completely dry. Consider airtight storage for wool if moth exclusion is a concern.
