Read your jacket’s care label first. Wash it using the label-approved method, then dry or reactivate it only as the label allows. Check whether water beads on the outer fabric; reapply a compatible durable water repellent (DWR) treatment only if beading has not returned. GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY garments are an exception: GORE-TEX says not to tumble-dry, iron, or apply DWR treatment to them.
Before washing, check the jacket’s care instructions
Waterproof jackets differ in fabric, construction, and finish, so there is no single wash or heat setting that applies to every shell. Follow the care label and the maker’s instructions for your specific jacket before choosing a detergent, wash cycle, dryer, iron, or waterproofing treatment.
GORE-TEX’s general guidance, for example, is not a substitute for the instructions on a jacket made with a different fabric or special construction. Its outerwear care instructions specifically exclude GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY from tumble-drying, ironing, and DWR treatment.
How to wash and re-waterproof a rain jacket
- Prepare the jacket. Remove dirt and debris before washing, as Patagonia advises in its garment care and repair guidance. Check the label for any preparation instructions.
- Wash according to the label. If machine washing is allowed, use a small amount of suitable liquid detergent or a technical garment cleaner. GORE-TEX recommends warm water at 105°F/40°C and cautions against powder detergent, fabric softener, and chlorine bleach. Patagonia recommends a technical cleaner or mild, water-based liquid detergent without dyes, whiteners, brighteners, or fragrance. These are brand-specific recommendations; your jacket’s care instructions take priority.
- Dry or reactivate only as permitted. Follow the label for drying and any heat. GORE-TEX says washing, drying, and reheating can help restore DWR, while Nikwax advises tumble-drying on low only when the care label allows it, or hanging the garment to dry. Do not assume that heat or ironing is safe for your jacket.
- Check the outer fabric. Once the jacket is dry, sprinkle or splash water onto it and observe whether droplets bead and run off. Cleaning and permitted drying may restore the surface repellency, so do not automatically apply a treatment if beading has returned.
- Reproof only if needed. If water still spreads across the outer fabric instead of beading, use a DWR treatment that is compatible with the jacket. Follow both the treatment directions and the garment’s care instructions.
Spray-on or wash-in DWR: which should you use?
Both types are supported options; the care guidance does not establish one as universally better. Check the product label and jacket instructions before choosing.

| Treatment | How it is applied | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Wash-in | Applied through a wash cycle. | Patagonia says wash-in treatment coats the item throughout. Confirm that the product is compatible with the garment and follow its directions. |
| Spray-on | Sprayed onto the garment’s exterior. | Patagonia says it can work when all relevant areas are covered. Apply carefully and follow the treatment maker’s directions. |
Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In is one example of a wash-in product, not a requirement or a universal recommendation. Nikwax also offers Tech Wash as a cleaner for rain and ski clothing; a technical cleaner is optional if the jacket’s care instructions allow another suitable detergent.
Wet-out is not the same as a failed waterproof membrane
Patagonia describes “wet out” as the outer fabric appearing wet while the wearer remains dry. It can happen sooner in high-friction areas such as cuffs or beneath pack straps. This points to reduced surface water repellency and is a reason to clean the jacket and check its DWR; it does not, by itself, prove that the waterproof membrane has failed.

- RESTORE DWR PROTECTION – Reapply durable water repellency to waterproof jackets, rain gear, ski wear, tents, and camping gear to help water bead off fabric surfaces
- MAINTAIN FABRIC BREATHABILITY – Helps GORE-TEX and waterproof-breathable materials stay breathable by reducing fabric saturation and wet-out during outdoor use
- PROTECT AGAINST WATER, DIRT & STAINS – Adds all-season protection to outerwear, backpacks, tents, and technical fabrics exposed to rain, mud, snow, and everyday wear
- TREATS MULTIPLE GARMENTS – 5 oz spray treats 1–2 adult jackets, 10 oz spray treats 2–4 jackets, and 16.9 oz spray treats 4–6 jackets depending on garment size and coverage
- FOR BEST PERFORMANCE – Wash gear first with Revivex Pro Cleaner before applying Durable Water Repellent (DWR) Spray to maximize waterproofing performance and longevity
DWR treatment addresses water repellency at the surface. The general care guidance cited here does not establish that reproofing repairs a damaged membrane, seam, or individual jacket. If water appears to be getting through after label-compliant cleaning and compatible reproofing, consult the jacket maker’s repair or support guidance rather than assuming another DWR application will solve it.

There is no single washing interval in the cited care guidance. Wash when the jacket is dirty or its performance is affected, while following the garment maker’s instructions. Dirt and residue can interfere with surface repellency, and cleaning may restore beading without additional treatment.
