Check the jacket’s care label first. If it allows machine washing, use a front-loading washer or a top-loader without an agitator, wash with a cleaner made for down, and rinse thoroughly. If the label allows tumble drying, use low heat and keep drying until the down is fully dry and no clumps remain. The shell can feel dry before the insulation inside.
Before washing, check the jacket’s care label
Follow the instructions on your specific jacket: washing and drying guidance can vary by model. Check which parts, if any, should be removed before washing, and whether the garment permits machine washing or tumble drying. If its instructions differ from general guidance, follow the label.
Choose a washer and cleaner that suit down
Use a suitable washer—or hand wash if it will not fit
If machine washing is permitted, choose a front-loader or a top-loading washer without an agitator. Outdoor Research warns that an agitator can damage down-item baffles (Outdoor Research’s down-jacket care guidance). Do not force a jacket into a machine if it will not fit easily; use the cleaner’s hand-wash instructions or consult the jacket maker.
Use a down-specific cleaner and rinse thoroughly
Choose a cleaner formulated for down rather than conventional detergent. Nikwax gives separate machine- and hand-wash directions for its Down Wash, while Outdoor Research advises against conventional detergents for down gear (Nikwax Down Wash instructions; Outdoor Research guidance). Follow both the jacket label and cleaner label for dosage, water temperature, cycle, and rinsing; do not assume one product’s settings apply to another. Nikwax calls for thorough rinsing.

Wash gently and remove excess water carefully
Use the gentle approach specified by the garment and cleaner instructions. Nikwax’s machine directions recommend a gentle cycle and slow spin. Wet down is heavy, so avoid a fast spin while the jacket still holds a lot of water. Nikwax advises repeating spin cycles and increasing the speed incrementally to remove excess water without putting undue strain on internal baffles (Nikwax instructions). Follow the garment label if its directions differ.
Dry completely, checking the insulation between cycles
-
Confirm the jacket’s care label permits tumble drying. If it does not, use the label’s alternate drying method.

If tumble drying is permitted, use low heat and leave enough space for the jacket to move. Drying may take more than one cycle.
-
Between cycles, check the insulation and gently tease apart any down clumps by hand. Continue drying until the clumps have disappeared and the insulation is fully dry; a dry-feeling shell is not proof that the down inside is dry.

Reproof only if the water repellency needs refreshing
A water-repellent treatment is not required after every wash. If the jacket needs its water repellency refreshed, Nikwax says Down Proof is for clean down gear; follow both the garment and treatment instructions (Nikwax Down Proof instructions).

How often should you wash a down jacket?
There is no universal washing schedule established by the cited guidance. Outdoor Research quotes its Senior Product Manager, Outerwear, Charlie Berg, recommending a monthly wash for down used heavily every week. Treat that as the company’s recommendation for heavy weekly use, not a general rule for every jacket (Outdoor Research).
