The safest way to wash cloth diapers is to follow the care instructions for each diaper’s materials—not a one-temperature-fits-all recipe. Remove formed stool, store used diapers as the maker directs, wash them thoroughly with a suitable detergent, and dry each component within its stated limits. A waterproof shell, elastic, and absorbent insert may not all tolerate the same treatment.
1. Identify what can be washed together
Before choosing a cycle, check the care label and the diaper maker’s current instructions. A pocket diaper has a shell and a separate absorbent insert; prefolds and flats are constructed differently. The shell may have waterproof layers or elastic that need gentler care than the absorbent pieces. Do not assume a setting that suits an insert is safe for every part.
Tide’s general guidance is to use the highest temperature the garment permits, while diaper makers set product-specific limits. For example, Rearz’s care instructions distinguish pocket shells and inserts from prefolds, flats, and waterproof layers. RagaBabe’s instructions set a maximum temperature for its own diapers. These are examples, not universal recipes.
2. Remove stool and prepare diapers
- Put formed stool in the toilet. CDC home guidance says, “If the child pooped into the diaper, discard poop in a toilet.” Keep soiled items away from surfaces that are difficult to clean, then wash your hands thoroughly. A diaper sprayer can help rinse stool, but it is optional; CDC’s instruction is to dispose of stool in the toilet. CDC home hygiene guidance (April 16, 2024).
- Prepare each style as its maker directs. Remove pocket inserts when instructed and fasten laundry tabs if the care directions recommend it. RagaBabe, for example, recommends separating inserts for its first wash.
3. Store used diapers safely and wash on schedule
Use a storage method permitted by the diaper maker, such as a lidded pail or washable moisture-proof wet bag. Tide describes a plastic-lined lidded bin or moisture-proof bag; Rearz advises a water-resistant, odor-proof container and keeping its diapers as dry as possible. Do not assume that soaking diapers in a wet pail is required.

Wash on the schedule specified for your product rather than letting used diapers sit indefinitely. Tide advises not leaving them unwashed beyond a few days, while RagaBabe recommends washing its own diapers at least every other day. Those intervals are brand-specific directions, not a single rule for all diapers.
4. Choose the wash cycle, temperature, and detergent by material
Use a thorough cycle and temperature that the care label permits, with laundry detergent suitable for the diaper and household. The makers’ directions vary: Rearz says its pocket shell and insert can be washed together on a full cycle with warm water, and recommends hot water for its prefolds and flats. RagaBabe specifies a warm wash up to 120°F for its diapers and separate hot washing for inserts. Those differences are why a universal hot-water routine can be risky for a shell or elastic-containing component.

Detergent recommendations also differ. Rearz cautions against natural oils, softeners, bleach, and enzymes in detergent; RagaBabe recommends Country Save powder and says some customers also use Tide Original Powder; Tide promotes its own Ultra OXI Powder. These are company recommendations, not independent comparisons establishing a best detergent. Follow the diaper maker’s current directions and the detergent label, especially if the two appear to conflict.
5. Dry without exceeding the care limits
Check drying instructions for each piece before using a dryer. Line drying is an option in the guidance from Tide, Rearz, and RagaBabe. Their machine-drying directions vary: Rearz allows low heat for some items, RagaBabe says its diapers may be tumble dried warm, and Tide suggests medium heat only when the garment permits it. Use the lowest-risk method allowed by your product’s instructions, and do not apply a shell’s drying limit to inserts—or vice versa—without checking.

Common mistakes that can shorten diaper life
- Using the same hot wash or dryer setting for a waterproof shell, elastic, and absorbent inserts without checking their care limits.
- Leaving formed stool on the diaper instead of disposing of it in the toilet.
- Storing used diapers indefinitely or ignoring the brand’s wash schedule.
- Using bleach or fabric softener despite a warning from the specific diaper maker.
- Treating detergent marketing or one brand’s advice as proof that the same product or routine is best for every diaper.
The CDC’s guidance addresses hygiene and stool disposal, not a complete laundry formula. Brand instructions are most useful for protecting the products they cover; they do not establish a tested winner among detergents or wash routines.
