For many stretch and moisture-wicking items, a cautious routine is to turn them inside out, wash in cold water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, skip fabric softener and dryer sheets, and air dry. Use low or no heat in a dryer only if the label allows it.
How to wash activewear: a practical routine
- Read the care label. Activewear varies by fiber, finish, seams, and construction, so follow the garment’s own instructions when they differ from general guidance. Patagonia also advises prioritizing the product label in its explanation of moisture-wicking fabrics.
- Sort and turn garments inside out. Separate colors and fabrics as needed. Turning items inside out helps protect outer surfaces, logos, and prints, and puts the side that touched sweat in contact with the wash. Under Armour gives this advice for compression shirts in its compression-shirt washing guide.
- Use a mesh laundry bag when useful. It is optional, but can help protect delicate pieces or items washed alongside zippers, hooks, or buttons from snagging, stretching, and tangling. Whirlpool recommends one in its guide to washing leggings.
- Choose a mild detergent and a cold, gentle wash. When the label permits, use cold water and a gentle or delicate cycle. Avoid fabric softener, dryer sheets, and bleach. These are general defaults, not instructions that override the tag.
- Dry with as little heat as the label allows. Air drying is a cautious option for elastic synthetics. If the care label permits tumble drying, choose low or no heat rather than assuming every activewear garment must stay out of the dryer.
Why activewear needs careful washing
Activewear often combines fibers that serve different purposes. Polyester is generally hydrophobic, while spandex (also called elastane) can provide stretch, recovery, compression, or support. Polyester, nylon, and spandex are common in lightweight, stretchy athleisure fabrics, according to REI’s overview of athleisure. The blend and any added finish matter, which is one reason there is no single wash setting for every garment.
Moisture wicking moves sweat away from the skin toward the fabric’s surface through capillary action. Patagonia explains that wicking treatments can degrade over time and that waxes in detergents or softeners can interfere with wicking chemistry. Residue may also affect quick drying, odor control, and spandex longevity. Its wicking guide and product-care guidance caution against softeners and residue buildup.
How to get sweat smell out of leggings
If an odor remains, Whirlpool suggests soaking the garment in cold water with a small amount of mild detergent for 20–30 minutes, then rinsing thoroughly. Squeeze out water gently rather than twisting the fabric, and follow the garment’s care label. Avoid adding softener to mask odor, since residue can interfere with wicking.

Can you put leggings in the dryer?
Only if the care label permits it. Air drying avoids unnecessary heat and is a cautious choice for stretch fabrics; if tumble drying is allowed, use low or no heat. Patagonia recommends line drying in its product-care guidance, while its broader fabric guidance discusses low- or medium-heat settings. Because instructions vary by garment and construction, use the label rather than treating either recommendation as universal.
What’s the best way to wash a compression shirt?
Start with the shirt’s care tag. Under Armour recommends turning compression shirts inside out, washing in cold water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, and avoiding fabric softener, bleach, and dryer sheets. Its compression-shirt guide notes that improper washing can reduce elasticity and affect fit. Dry according to the tag; do not assume the same drying method applies to every shirt.

What to avoid
- Fabric softener and dryer sheets: residue can interfere with moisture wicking; Patagonia also warns it may affect spandex longevity.
- Excess heat: elastic synthetics can be damaged by unsuitable heat, so use air drying or a permitted low/no-heat setting.
- Harsh or unnecessary products: use mild detergent rather than assuming a special performance-fabric product is required. The cited guidance does not establish that a particular detergent restores stretch or wicking.
- Ignoring the label: a general cold-and-gentle routine is a useful default only when it is consistent with the garment’s instructions.
Under Armour’s leggings-care guide likewise recommends cold water, washing with like colors, gentle detergent, and avoiding softener or bleach, while noting that care-label directions can vary.
