Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To view a saved screenshot in a browser, open the image file with the browser’s file-opening command or drag it into an open browser window. PNG and JPEG files normally display directly. If you instead mean “take a screenshot of a webpage,” use your browser’s capture tool—Firefox and Microsoft Edge document built-in options for selected areas, visible content and, in some cases, the entire page.
View an existing screenshot file
- Find the file. Open your computer’s file manager and locate the saved image, usually ending in
.png,.jpgor.jpeg. - Open it in the browser. Use the browser’s Open File command (the exact menu label differs by browser and operating system), then select the image. You can also drag the file from the file manager onto an open browser window or tab.
- Inspect the image. The browser displays the image as a local file. This action does not upload it to a website.
PNG and JPEG have broad support in current desktop browsers. PNG is usually the better choice for interface screenshots, diagrams, logos, text and transparency because it is lossless. JPEG uses lossy compression and is generally more appropriate for photographs. The MDN image-format guide explains the format and browser-support differences.
If the image will not display
- Check the filename extension. Try a known image such as
.pngor.jpg/.jpeg. - Confirm that the file is complete rather than a partially downloaded or zero-byte file.
- Try opening it in another image viewer. If no application can read it, the file may be damaged.
- Do not merely rename an extension and expect conversion. Converting PNG to JPEG, WebP or another format requires actually re-encoding the image in an image editor or converter.
WebP and AVIF can reduce file size, but support and behavior depend on browser version. If an image must work for a broad audience, provide a PNG or JPEG fallback. TIFF is not a safe universal choice; support is more limited. The MDN guide is the appropriate reference when compatibility is important.
Make sure you are asking the right question
Viewing a screenshot means opening an image you already have. Capturing a webpage means creating a new image of what is rendered in the browser. A browser can display the result of either process, but the controls and limitations are different. The following sections cover built-in capture tools in Firefox and Edge; other browsers may use different menus, extensions or operating-system tools.

Capture a webpage in Firefox
Firefox’s documented Take Screenshot feature can copy or download a selected region, an automatically highlighted page element, the visible portion or the full page. Mozilla’s current instructions are in its Firefox screenshot help page.
- Open the page you want to capture.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot. Mozilla also documents Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows and Linux and Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose the capture mode: drag a region, select the highlighted page element, choose the visible area, or choose the full page.
- Use Copy to place the image on the clipboard, or Download to save it as an image file.
Choosing a Firefox capture mode
- Selected region: useful when you need exact coordinates or only one part of a page.
- Highlighted page element: convenient for a card, article, image or other element that Firefox can identify.
- Visible portion: captures only what is currently inside the viewport.
- Full page: captures content beyond the viewport in one image, when Firefox can render the page successfully.
After saving, open the downloaded PNG (or the format Firefox provides in your version) in a browser tab to inspect it at full size.
Capture a webpage in Microsoft Edge
Edge’s Screenshot feature can capture a full page or a selected area, add markup, and copy or save the result. Microsoft says the feature can be reached from the right-click menu or Settings and documents Ctrl+Shift+S as a shortcut. Its availability and behavior can vary by device type, market and browser version; Microsoft states, “Feature availability and functionality may vary by device type, market, and browser version.” See Microsoft’s Edge Screenshot feature page for current details.
- Load the webpage in Edge.
- Open Screenshot from the page’s context menu or the relevant Edge Settings entry. If your installation exposes the shortcut, press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Select a page area or the full-page option.
- Apply markup if needed, then choose the control to copy or save the image.
If a menu or shortcut is missing, update Edge and check the feature page for your version and region. Do not assume that another Chromium-based browser exposes the same command.
Choose the capture you actually need
| Need | Best choice | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| One control, paragraph or image | Firefox selected region or highlighted element; Edge selected area | A precise crop without unrelated page content |
| What a visitor currently sees | Visible-area capture | Only the current viewport, including its scroll position |
| A long article or landing page | Firefox full page or Edge full page | A tall image containing content beyond the viewport |
| Marking up a result | Edge Screenshot markup, or an image editor after saving | Annotations before copying or saving |
| Using the image in another app | Copy to clipboard | No intermediate file; paste into an editor, document or chat |
| Keeping an archival file | Download or save | A file you can reopen in the browser later |
Why full-page captures can differ
Lazy-loaded images, sticky headers, animations, cookie dialogs and content that appears only after scrolling can change a full-page result. If the page is interactive, first dismiss overlays and allow important content to load. A visible-area capture is often more faithful to the exact state you are looking at; a full-page capture is more useful for documentation and review.
Pick a format that preserves what is on screen
| Format | Compression | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| PNG | Lossless | Text, diagrams, logos, UI edges and transparency | Can produce larger files for photographic images |
| JPEG | Lossy | Photographs and continuous-tone imagery | Compression artifacts around text and sharp edges; no transparency |
| WebP | Lossy or lossless | Smaller modern web images | Older or restricted viewers may need a fallback |
| AVIF | Modern, highly compressed | Small files where current-browser support is acceptable | Support and encoding behavior vary by browser version |
| TIFF | Varies | Workflows that specifically require TIFF | Not broadly supported across browsers; Safari support is noted by MDN |
For a screenshot dominated by small type or one-pixel lines, start with PNG. Use JPEG only when the smaller file or photographic content outweighs the loss of crisp edges. If you publish WebP or AVIF, retain a PNG or JPEG fallback when you cannot control the reader’s browser.

Privacy and practical checks
- Opening a local image in a browser is a local file action; it is different from attaching the file to a form or uploading it.
- Review the image for passwords, private messages, personal data, internal URLs and browser notifications before sharing it.
- For reproducible documentation, record the page URL, date, browser version, viewport size and whether you captured the viewport or the full page.
- Retake the image after dismissing consent banners or chat widgets if they obscure the content you need. If an overlay cannot be closed, capture the unobstructed area instead of presenting a misleading full-page image.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need repeatable webpage captures from code or CI rather than a one-off local image, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one request. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper sizes/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector/delay/network idle, blocking ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameters used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

Troubleshooting checklist
The browser shows a blank tab or an error
Verify that the file is really an image, not an HTML error page with a renamed extension. Check its size, download it again if necessary, and try PNG or JPEG. A damaged file must be recreated or restored from a backup.
The capture contains only the visible viewport
Choose the browser’s full-page mode rather than visible-area mode. If full-page capture is unavailable or clips content, use a dedicated capture service or take several viewport captures and combine them in an editor.

A consent banner or chat widget covers the page
Close the overlay before capturing. If it cannot be closed, capture the required element or use a workflow that handles consent and removes known overlays before rendering, such as ScreenshotNeo’s configurable cleanup steps.
Text looks fuzzy
Prefer PNG, capture at an appropriate device or retina scale, and avoid repeatedly saving a PNG as JPEG. JPEG artifacts are especially noticeable around small text and high-contrast edges.
The shortcut does nothing
Shortcuts are browser- and operating-system-specific. Open the browser’s context menu or Settings and look for Take Screenshot or Screenshot; then check the official Firefox or Edge documentation for your installed version.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the quickest way to open a screenshot?
Drag the PNG or JPEG from your file manager into an open browser window, or use the browser’s Open File command.
Which format keeps screenshot text sharpest?
PNG is the usual choice because it is lossless; JPEG compression can create artifacts around text and sharp edges.
How do I capture only part of a webpage?
Use Firefox’s selected-region or highlighted-element mode, or Edge’s selected-area Screenshot mode.
