FFmpeg writes its logs to stderr by default. To see them, check the terminal or cloud runtime that captured the process’s standard error; to keep a file copy, use FFmpeg’s -report option or configure FFREPORT. A cloud log viewer will show FFmpeg output only if the host or a collector is configured to send it there.
First identify where FFmpeg’s output goes
The right place to look depends on how FFmpeg was started. Its default log destination is stderr, not a cloud provider’s logging service. The runtime may display that output, retain it, forward it elsewhere—or discard it after the process exits.
- Identify the launcher. Is FFmpeg running in an interactive shell, a system service, a container, a scheduled job, or a managed runtime? Check the service or platform configuration if you are unsure.
- Check how that runtime handles standard error. Look for its live process output or task, pod, container, or job logs. Confirm whether the runtime captures
stderrand whether it retains or forwards captured output. - Choose whether you need live output or a saved report. Use the captured process output for immediate inspection. Use
-reportorFFREPORTif you need an FFmpeg-generated file. - Check the cloud log configuration. A provider’s log viewer displays entries received by its configured logging path; it does not automatically discover every process or local file.
Watch FFmpeg’s live output
If you started FFmpeg in a terminal and it is still attached to that terminal, inspect the output there. If a service, container, or job launched it, open that runtime’s process logs and check whether standard error is included. Many container logging setups capture both standard output and standard error, but the configured driver, agent, or service determines what is actually collected.
Start with the info log level for routine operation. If the output does not contain enough context to diagnose a problem, increase it to verbose or debug. FFmpeg also recognizes quiet, panic, fatal, error, warning, and trace. More detail can make an incident easier to investigate, but it can also produce much more output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
FFmpeg supports level, time, and datetime prefixes. A time or date-time prefix can help you compare FFmpeg messages with cloud-runtime events, provided the timestamps and time zones are understood consistently.
Save FFmpeg output to a report file
Use -report for a full diagnostic report
Add -report to the FFmpeg command when you want a file containing the full command line and log output. FFmpeg names the report using the program name and a timestamp, and writes it to the process’s current working directory. The option also changes logging to debug, so it is useful for detailed diagnosis but may be noisier than routine log viewing.

ffmpeg -report -i input.mp4 output.mp4
After the process starts, locate the report in the working directory used by FFmpeg—not necessarily the directory you see in an interactive login. For a service or container, check its configured working directory and whether that filesystem persists after the process exits.
Use FFREPORT to choose a filename and level
Set FFREPORT when you want to select the report filename and logging level rather than use the default report naming and debug verbosity. For example, this requests an info-level report named ffreport.log:

FFREPORT=file=ffreport.log:level=32 ffmpeg -i input.mp4 output.mp4
In this syntax, level 32 is info. The example uses shell-style environment-variable assignment; adapt it to the shell or service configuration that launches FFmpeg. The value contains delimiters that FFmpeg parses, so follow FFmpeg’s escaping rules as well as your shell’s quoting rules if the filename or value includes special characters.
Find the output in your cloud environment
A report file and a cloud log entry are separate destinations. Creating a report does not automatically upload it to a provider’s logging service. To retain it centrally, configure the host or a collector to collect that file; otherwise, inspect it in the process’s working directory while that storage remains available.

Google Compute Engine
On a Compute Engine VM, console output and retained Cloud Logging entries are not necessarily the same thing. Google documents a Serial port 1 (console) view on the VM instances page for serial console output. That output may not appear in Logs Explorer. Sending serial-port output to Cloud Logging requires the relevant configuration.
For entries that are retained in Cloud Logging, use Logs Explorer and check that you have selected the correct project or resource and time range. Access also depends on your permissions and any filters or scope selections. Application output from standard output or standard error may be forwarded through the Ops Agent in some configurations; do not assume this is set up on every VM.

Containers and managed runtimes
Start with the task, pod, container, or job logs for the platform that launched FFmpeg. Those logs may contain its standard output and standard error if the platform’s logging driver, agent, or service captures them. AWS documentation describes ECS and EKS routes to CloudWatch; Google documents standard-output and standard-error ingestion through the Ops Agent in some configurations. These are platform-specific examples, not interchangeable setup instructions: check the collection route actually used by your deployment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check when logs are missing
- No live output: Confirm that you are viewing the correct process or runtime and that it captures
stderr, where FFmpeg logs by default. - The FFmpeg process has exited: Check whether the runtime retains logs after exit. For a file report, look in FFmpeg’s current working directory and confirm that the directory or container storage still exists.
- The report is more detailed than expected:
-reportimplies debug verbosity. For a named report and an explicitly selected level, useFFREPORTinstead. - The report file exists but the cloud viewer is empty: Configure collection or forwarding for that file. A local report does not become a cloud log entry automatically.
- The cloud viewer has no expected entries: Check the account or project, resource selection, time window, permissions, forwarding agent or logging driver, and filters or exclusions.
- Standard-error output is absent from cloud logs: Verify that the runtime is configured to capture and forward standard error, not only another output stream.
Use FFmpeg logs alongside YouTube’s stream-health information
FFmpeg logs tell you what the FFmpeg process reported. Cloud host logs tell you what the runtime or its configured collector captured. Neither, by itself, establishes what YouTube received or displayed. For a complete diagnosis, check YouTube’s own live-stream health information separately; the precise current Control Room navigation and indicators depend on YouTube’s interface and are not specified here.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream rather than managing an FFmpeg process and its host, StreamNeo keeps a stream running from uploaded videos in the cloud. The setup is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not replace FFmpeg log collection for an FFmpeg process you operate.
Quick Recap
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
