| A command’s yielded value, found elements, or selector | Browser DevTools console after clicking the Command Log entry |
| Cypress startup, project, browser detection, reporter, or video process | Terminal output enabled with a relevant DEBUG namespace |

View commands and snapshots in open mode
-
From your project directory, run
npx cypress openand open the spec you want to inspect. -
In the Test Runner, select a test to expand its Command Log. The log lists commands and hooks in execution order, including setup and teardown hooks.
-
Hover over a command to show the application-under-test preview at the state captured for that command. Click entries to inspect them and, with browser DevTools open, see additional details in the console.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Cypress retains 50 tests’ worth of snapshots and command data by default. The Command Log also displays page events such as XHR and fetch requests, URL hash changes, page loads, and form submissions. Use the “Show HTTP Requests” toggle to hide request entries when they obscure the sequence; hiding them does not stop requests or make them unavailable to assertions or tools such as cy.intercept().
Inspect command details in browser DevTools
Keep the browser’s Developer Tools open and click a Command Log entry. Cypress writes structured information for that command to the browser console, including the command issued, yielded value, elements found, and selector used. This can reveal what a query or action actually received without adding temporary logging statements.
Add structured details for custom commands
Use Cypress.log() to control a custom command’s Command Log entry. Its consoleProps option supplies structured data shown in DevTools when that entry is clicked. For asynchronous commands, autoEnd: false lets you end the log entry when the work actually completes.

Enable Cypress process logs in the terminal
Set DEBUG before launching Cypress. To begin broadly in a POSIX shell or Windows Git Bash, run:
DEBUG=cypress:* npx cypress run
For startup diagnostics while opening the Specs UI, replace run with open. Broad output can be large and affect performance, so enable it only while diagnosing and narrow it to the relevant subsystem.

DEBUG=cypress:server:project— project opening.DEBUG=cypress:server:browsers*— browser detection.DEBUG=cypress:server:reporter— reporter problems.DEBUG=cypress:server:video— video recording.
Namespaces can be combined with commas; a leading hyphen excludes a noisy source. For example, use DEBUG=cypress:server:*, -cypress:server:video to exclude video logs from a broader server diagnostic (shell quoting may be needed for some shells).

Windows shell syntax
- Windows CMD:
set DEBUG=cypress:*, then runnpx cypress runin the same window. - PowerShell:
$env:DEBUG='cypress:*', then runnpx cypress run.
Cypress’s troubleshooting guide also documents equivalent invocation forms for Yarn, pnpm, and Bun. If no debug output appears, check that the environment variable was set in the shell that launched Cypress and that permissions are not preventing output.
Enable browser-side Cypress driver logs
Terminal DEBUG output and browser-side driver output are different. If the problem occurs inside the browser during cypress open, open browser DevTools, set localStorage.debug = 'cypress*', reload the page, and enable Verbose messages in the console. This exposes cypress:driver logs running in the browser.
Find screenshots, videos, and recorded-run evidence
Call cy.screenshot() to capture a screenshot manually in either cypress open or cypress run. Cypress automatically captures screenshots for failures in cypress run by default, but not in open mode. The default screenshot directory is cypress/screenshots; project configuration can change that directory or disable failure screenshots.

Cypress can record a video for each spec during cypress run when video recording is enabled. For runs recorded to Cypress Cloud, Test Replay can replay execution with debugging capability. Replay requires a recorded run and applicable Cloud access. Treat screenshots and videos as supporting context rather than a replacement for command-level inspection.
Test whether the Command Log is causing slowdowns
Cypress documents cases where the Command Log can contribute to slow tests or browser crashes. As an isolation test, run with the Command Log disabled:
CYPRESS_NO_COMMAND_LOG=1 npx cypress run
The CLI also supports --no-runner-ui to hide the full Runner UI during a run. With the Command Log disabled, screenshots and videos no longer include it, so use this only when testing whether the log or Runner is contributing to the issue.
Troubleshoot common Cypress logging problems
- No terminal debug output: Confirm that
DEBUGis set in the same shell session that launches Cypress. On Windows, use the CMD or PowerShell syntax above rather than POSIX inline assignment. - Too much output or slower execution: Replace
cypress:*with a targeted namespace, or disable debug output when it is no longer needed. - Browser driver logs are missing: Use the browser DevTools console, set
localStorage.debug, reload, and enable Verbose messages. Node-side terminal logs do not substitute for this browser-side setting. - Request entries obscure commands: Turn off “Show HTTP Requests” in the Command Log. This changes display only; it does not block the requests.
- No failure screenshot in open mode: That mode does not automatically capture failure screenshots. Add
cy.screenshot()where needed or run the spec withcypress run. - Logs contain private data: Review custom
consolePropsand other logging for credentials, tokens, personal data, or sensitive response bodies before sharing output. - Tests slow down or the browser crashes: Temporarily disable the Command Log with
CYPRESS_NO_COMMAND_LOG=1to isolate its effect; account for the missing Command Log in captured screenshots and videos.
Or skip the browser setup
For a website screenshot outside a Cypress test, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one GET request. This is not a replacement for Cypress’s command log or test debugging; it is an option when you need a clean capture of a page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does cypress open automatically save a screenshot when a test fails?
No. Automatic failure screenshots are enabled by default in cypress run, not open mode; use cy.screenshot() for a manual capture.
Can I hide network requests without stopping them?
Yes. The Command Log’s “Show HTTP Requests” toggle hides request entries from the display; requests still run and remain available to assertions and tools such as cy.intercept().
