There you can see installed extensions, turn them on or off, change available permissions, or uninstall them. To add one, choose Safari > Safari Extensions to open the App Store, install an extension, then enable it in Safari’s Extensions settings.
How to view extensions installed in Safari
- Open Safari.
- Choose Safari > Settings, then click Extensions. In older Safari versions, the menu item may be called Preferences.
- Select an extension to view its available settings. A checked box means it is enabled; clear the box to turn it off.
The list shows extensions installed on the Mac. Depending on your setup, Safari may also show compatible extensions under On Other Devices; selecting one there can install it on this Mac. See Apple’s Safari Extensions settings guide.
How to add a Safari extension
Safari extensions are distributed through the Mac App Store. Apple says Safari 12 or later is required to get extensions from the App Store. If your version of Safari is older, update macOS to get the Safari version available for your Mac.
- In Safari, choose Safari > Safari Extensions. The App Store opens to its Safari extensions listing.
- Choose Get or the displayed price. Sign in with your Apple Account if prompted, then click Install.
- Open the extension if prompted and follow its setup instructions.
- In Safari, choose Safari > Settings > Extensions, then select the extension’s checkbox to enable it.
Installing and enabling are separate steps: an installed extension will not run in Safari until it is enabled. Apple describes the Mac App Store as the “safest and easiest way to discover and install extensions”; its App Store extensions are reviewed, signed, hosted by Apple, and updated automatically. See Apple’s guide to using Safari extensions on Mac and Apple’s instructions for getting extensions.

How to remove an extension from Safari

Review permissions, profiles, and private browsing
Check website access
Extensions may be able to access webpage content. Review the extensions you have installed and make sure you understand their purpose. Where an extension offers website-access controls, you can limit it to selected sites or require websites to ask before granting access. Apple explains these controls in its Safari Extensions settings guide and web app Extensions settings guide.
Allow an extension in private windows
On macOS Sonoma 14 or later, extensions that require website access are off by default in private windows. To allow one, open Safari > Settings > Extensions, select the extension, and choose Allow in Private Browsing.

Manage extensions for profiles
Safari profiles can have extensions managed independently. Extensions for profiles other than the default are managed under the Profiles tab, and extensions are off by default for each new profile.
Share compatible extensions across Apple devices
Extension sharing is available starting with macOS Ventura 13, iOS 16, and iPadOS 16. On Mac, enable Share across devices in Safari’s Extensions settings. Apple says that extensions appear on other devices when the required Apple Account, iCloud for Safari, and two-factor authentication conditions are met. To remove a shared extension from every device, uninstall it on each device. Details are in Apple’s Safari extensions guide.
