Windows 11 does not include the old Timeline interface for browsing a chronological list of past activities. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history to manage the local history settings available on your version of Windows, but use recent files, OneDrive, or an app’s own history to resume work.

If by “activity” you mean Microsoft account sign-ins, use the separate Recent activity page; for data associated with Microsoft services, check the privacy dashboard. Neither is a complete record of everything you did on your PC.

Open Activity history settings in Windows 11

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Select Activity history.

This page manages available on-device Activity history settings, such as stopping local storage or clearing stored history. Controls can vary by Windows release and update. The page is not a Timeline-style activity viewer.

What you can do on the Activity history page

Task What to know
Manage local storage Windows provides a control to stop saving activity history locally. Available settings can vary by release and update.
Clear stored history Use the clear control on the page to remove stored history available through this Windows setting.
View a chronological activity list The Settings page does not provide the retired Windows Timeline experience.

How to clear Windows 11 activity history

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history.
  2. Find the available clear-history control.
  3. Select it and confirm if Windows prompts you.

If you want Windows to stop saving new local activity history, turn off the local storage option if it appears on your device. This is separate from browser history, which you manage in the browser.

Where to find recent activity instead

Resume work on files or tasks

Microsoft recommends using recent files, OneDrive, or the relevant app’s own history to find previous work in Windows 11. In File Explorer, select Home and check the Recent section. You can also open an application’s recent-files list, such as File > Open Recent, if it offers one.

These lists are not a complete system activity log. Whether an item appears depends on the file location and the history maintained by Windows or the app.

Check Microsoft account sign-ins

Open the Microsoft account Recent activity page and sign in. Microsoft says it shows when and where the account was used during the last 30 days, focusing on significant account-security events. It may not show every event, and it is not a complete record of PC activity.

View data associated with Microsoft services

Open the Microsoft privacy dashboard and sign in. It can show selected data associated with Microsoft services, subject to the account, service, settings, region, and data availability. Missing entries do not necessarily mean an activity did not occur.

The privacy dashboard is separate from Windows Activity history and account Recent activity. It should not be treated as a complete device usage log.

Can Diagnostic Data Viewer show past activity?

No. Microsoft’s Diagnostic Data Viewer documentation says it displays diagnostic data available while the viewer is running and does not provide diagnostic-data history. It is not a substitute for Timeline, account Recent activity, or an app’s history.

Why Windows 11 has no Timeline

Microsoft retired the Timeline experience in Windows 11. The Timeline support instructions for Windows 10 describe a different experience; pressing Windows key + Tab in Windows 11 does not open the old Timeline history. Microsoft points Windows 11 users to recent files, OneDrive, or app-based history instead.

For details, see Microsoft’s Timeline support page.

Privacy and version details

Windows Activity history settings concern on-device history; they do not expose a complete record of everything done on the PC. The option to send activity history to Microsoft was deprecated for Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2 in the January 23, 2024 update, KB5034204. Earlier or unupdated installations may still show that option. Microsoft documents the settings and version caveat in its article on Windows activity history and privacy.

FAQ

Can I see a Timeline of activity in Windows 11?

No. Microsoft retired the Timeline experience in Windows 11. The Activity history Settings page manages available local history settings but does not show chronological activity cards.

What is the fastest way to find recently used files?

Open File Explorer, select Home, and check Recent. You can also use OneDrive or the affected application’s own history.

Where can I check whether someone accessed my Microsoft account?

Use the Microsoft account Recent activity page. It covers significant account-security events from the last 30 days as described by Microsoft, not every PC action.

Does the privacy dashboard show everything I do on my PC?

No. It shows selected data associated with Microsoft services, subject to account, settings, service, region, and data availability.

Can Diagnostic Data Viewer show a history of diagnostic data?

No. Microsoft says it displays available data while the viewer is running and does not provide diagnostic-data history.

The Bottom Line

Windows 11 has Activity history settings but no Timeline viewer. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history to manage available local settings. To resume work, check recent files, OneDrive, or an app’s history; use Microsoft account Recent activity for security events and the privacy dashboard for selected Microsoft-service data.
