To verify a compressed PDF, compare its properties with the original, open and inspect the output, test search and text extraction on pages throughout the file, and validate its PDF standard if one is required. These checks cover different failure modes: a PDF can pass a standards check yet contain hard-to-read pages, or look correct while its scanned text is not searchable. Keep the original so you can compare and recover if a check fails.
What to check after compressing a PDF
- File and document properties: Check page count, PDF version, file size, fonts, permissions, and any declared conformance level when those details are available. A smaller file is not proof that content was preserved.
- Visual fidelity: Confirm that pages render and that text, images, layouts, and other visible content remain usable.
- Searchability and extraction: Search for distinctive text and copy representative passages to check whether text is present and comes through accurately.
- Standards conformance: If the PDF must meet a profile such as PDF/A, PDF/UA, PDF/X, PDF/VT, or PDF/E, validate against the applicable profile.
Adobe’s PDF Properties documentation describes reporting properties such as page count, version, size, conformance, fonts, and permissions. None of those properties alone establishes that every page looks right or that all extracted text is accurate.
Step 1: Keep the original and record a baseline
Before compression, retain the source PDF and note its page count, PDF version, file size, and any standards claim. Record fonts and security permissions too if your tools report them. After compression, compare the same properties. A size change is expected; a version change may also be intentional, but should be understood rather than assumed harmless.
For an important or repeatable workflow, make a short log with the file name, compression tool and version, settings, properties compared, searches performed, pages inspected, and any validation result. This is a practical recordkeeping measure, not a universal PDF requirement.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Step 2: Open the compressed PDF and inspect its pages
Open the saved output in a PDF reader and move through the document. Check every page when feasible. For a long file, render all pages to images or inspect them at a practical zoom, giving particular attention to charts, fine print, forms, unusual fonts, transparency, and scanned pages.
Look for missing or blank pages and areas, clipped content, shifted layouts, substituted or garbled characters, and images that have become too soft to read. Compression settings can affect images, fonts, and transparency; Adobe’s compression and optimization guide describes controls for those areas. A standards validator or successful text search cannot replace this visual inspection.

Step 3: Test search and extracted text across the file
Use your PDF reader’s Find command to search for several distinctive terms from early, middle, and late pages. Choose words that should be easy to identify, such as a heading, a name, or a specific phrase. Then select and copy representative paragraphs from those areas and inspect the pasted text for missing words, incorrect characters, or an order that differs from the page.
If the original contains scanned pages, check those pages specifically. A scan may contain only page images rather than selectable text; OCR (optical character recognition) is needed to recognize text in images and make it searchable. Adobe explains image-only PDFs and OCR in its accessibility and OCR guidance. A successful search confirms only that the tested term was found; it does not prove OCR is accurate across every page.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Step 4: Check permissions and relevant properties
Compare the output’s reported page count, PDF version, fonts, permissions, and conformance information with the baseline. Changes may be expected, but investigate ones that could affect your intended use. In particular, check whether security settings prevent copying or extracting text if people or software need that access.
Adobe notes that security settings can interfere with screen readers, which need to copy or extract text to produce speech. Searchability alone does not guarantee that the document’s permissions allow the access your audience or workflow requires.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Step 5: Validate a PDF standard when the document needs one
If a client, archive, publisher, or other requirement calls for a specific PDF profile, run a conformance check against that profile after compression. Acrobat documents a Verify Conformance workflow and standards information in its PDF standards guidance. The veraPDF CLI documentation describes selecting a profile and producing validation reports that identify failed checks.
Read a passing result narrowly: it is evidence that the checked file meets the selected profile according to that validator. It does not establish that every page renders correctly, that OCR is accurate, or that all accessibility needs have been met.

Choose checks that match the risk
| Need | Check | What it can show | What it cannot show alone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compare the file | Inspect PDF properties before and after | Reported page count, version, size, conformance, font, and permission details | That pages render correctly or extracted text is accurate |
| Confirm searchable text | Use Find, select and copy text, or check OCR-related properties | Whether searched terms or text are available on the pages checked | That OCR is accurate on every page or reading order is correct |
| Check visual fidelity | Open or render pages and inspect them | Whether visible content and legibility appear intact on the pages inspected | Formal compliance with PDF/A or another profile |
| Check standards compliance | Use Acrobat verification or veraPDF profile validation | Whether the checked file meets the selected profile according to the validator | Complete visual fidelity, accessibility, or OCR accuracy |
Acrobat’s documentation covers compression, properties, OCR-related checks, and standards verification; advanced desktop optimization is documented for Acrobat Pro, Premium, or Studio. Product tiers and interface labels may change, so confirm current availability in the version you use. veraPDF’s documented command-line path focuses on profile-based validation and reports. Neither replaces visual review and direct search or extraction tests.
If a check fails
- Pages are missing, damaged, or illegible: Reopen the original, adjust compression settings, and create a new output. Pay attention to image, font, and transparency settings.
- Search finds no text on scanned pages: Check whether the pages are image-only and whether OCR has been applied. Test the resulting text rather than treating the existence of an OCR layer as proof of accuracy.
- Text can be found but cannot be copied or read by a tool: Review the PDF’s security permissions and the access needs of the intended workflow.
- Profile validation reports failures: Review the validator’s report against the required profile, then return to the original or an appropriate working copy to correct the issue and validate the new output.
Adobe’s optimizer guide describes retaining an existing PDF version and adjusting image, font, and transparency controls. Exact options vary by product version and tier.
