Pause, trace the report to its original source, look for independent confirmation, and check any photo or video separately. If important details remain unverified, wait to share—or clearly label the claim as unconfirmed. A fast-moving story can be partly true while its cause, location, timing, casualty count, or attribution is still unknown.
Use this quick check before sharing
- Pause. Do not repost an alarming claim just because it is being shared widely. Breaking reports may be incomplete, and urgency or emotional language can push people to share before checking. Indiana DHS advises checking sources and supporting evidence (Get Prepared: Misinformation); the Associated Press also recommends slowing down when authenticity is uncertain (Verification at AP).
- Find the earliest source you can. Open the post rather than relying on a screenshot or a repost. Check who published it, when, and where the information or media came from. An early post is a lead to investigate, not proof that the claim is true.
- Look for independent confirmation. Check multiple credible news organizations and, where available, primary records or direct statements. Several outlets repeating the same original post are not several independent confirmations. AP describes corroborating facts through multiple reliable sources; Reuters calls for cross-checking wherever possible (AP news values and principles; Reuters Journalistic Standards).
- Separate confirmed facts from unanswered questions. A report that an incident occurred does not automatically establish its cause, the identities of people involved, casualty figures, or responsibility. Note which details are attributed to named sources or documents and which remain uncertain.
- Check attached images and video on their own merits. A genuine photograph can be old, taken elsewhere, or paired with a false caption. Use the visual checks below rather than treating the media as proof of every claim in the post.
- Choose what to do based on what is established. If a key claim rests on one source or the media cannot be authenticated, wait and check again as the story develops. If you must discuss it, say plainly what is unconfirmed rather than presenting it as fact.
How to check a photo or video
Media verification is a separate task from verifying the event described in a post. A reverse-image search may reveal that an image appeared earlier, but it cannot by itself establish when or where the image was made, or whether the accompanying claim is accurate. AP describes using reverse-image search, geolocation, contextual comparison, frame-by-frame checks, and contact with the original filmer in its verification guidance.
- Search a still or key frame. Reverse-search the image, or select a clear frame from a video and search that. Look for earlier appearances and compare the captions, dates, and locations attached to them.
- Inspect location clues. Compare visible landmarks, street signs, language, road markings, and other distinctive details with the place claimed. A clue can help narrow down a location, but one matching landmark is not enough to authenticate the full clip.
- Check timing and context. Look at weather, shadows, visible events, and other details that could conflict with the claimed date. Consider whether the footage might depict a different event or an earlier moment.
- Watch the whole clip, not just a viral excerpt. Notice cuts, inconsistent details, or missing context. If a claim depends on a particular moment, inspect that portion and surrounding frames rather than relying only on a short repost.
- Trace the source. Find the earliest available upload and, where practical, whether the person who captured the material can be contacted. AP’s guidance describes contacting original contributors and checking authorship and context.
AI-generated imagery can complicate these checks. Visual oddities or an AI-detection result may be clues, but neither alone proves that an image is authentic or fake. AP says generative-AI output should be treated as unvetted source material and recommends ordinary source and corroboration checks (Standards around generative AI). Even when an image is genuine, its date, location, and relevance to the current claim still need checking.
How to compare conflicting reports
When accounts disagree, compare what each source actually knows rather than counting how many posts repeat a version. Check:

- Access to evidence: Does the source cite a document, a direct observation, an official statement, or a named person? Is the basis for the claim clear?
- Independence: Did the outlet verify the detail itself, or is it quoting another report or circulating post?
- Specificity: Are the date and location clear, and does the report distinguish the event itself from claims about cause, identity, casualties, or responsibility?
- Media provenance: Has the image or clip appeared before, and does its context match the claim?
- Handling of uncertainty: Does the report identify what remains unknown, or state a developing claim as settled?
There is no universal numerical score for deciding whether a breaking report is true. Reuters notes that extreme speed can sometimes mean publication before a rumor is resolved, while its sourcing and verification standards still apply (Reuters Journalistic Standards). Treat an unresolved detail as unresolved, even when the broader event is confirmed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when you still cannot verify it
- Do not share it as established fact. Waiting is better than amplifying a claim that may later prove wrong.
- If you need to refer to it, attribute it and state its status—for example, “This claim has not been independently confirmed.”
- Recheck credible outlets and primary sources for updates instead of relying on a growing chain of reposts.
- If you already shared it, correct or remove the post and make the change clear to people who may have seen it.
