To verify whether an online course will count, check three things separately: whether the awarding institution or program is officially recognized, whether the issuer can authenticate your certificate, and whether the organization that will receive it accepts it for your specific purpose. A course can pass one check and fail another. The right official register depends on your country, credential, study dates, and intended outcome.
What do you need the course to count for?
Start with the decision you need someone to make: admission to further study, transfer credit, a job requirement, professional licensing, reimbursement, or a government process. Then identify the country or jurisdiction and the organization that will make that decision.
Marketing terms such as “recognized,” “accredited,” or “certificate included” do not establish that a particular university, employer, regulator, funder, or government body will accept the course. The receiving organization applies its own criteria.
Separate recognition, certificate authenticity, and eligibility

These checks are not interchangeable. An accredited institution does not guarantee that every course transfers or meets a licensing requirement; a genuine certificate is not automatically accepted for every purpose.

How to verify a course, step by step
- Define the outcome and jurisdiction. Write down what you need the course to qualify you for and where you will use it.
- Identify the credential and awarding body. The teaching platform or website may differ from the institution that awards the certificate. Ask the provider in writing who awards it, what level it represents, whether it carries credit, and which regulator or accreditor oversees it.
- Check the official register for the exact scope. Look up the awarding institution and, if required in that system, the specific program, credential, delivery mode, and enrollment session. Confirm that the status covered your period of study, not only the present day.
- Confirm what the recognition means. Check the scope of the regulator’s or accreditor’s status. Institutional accreditation applies to an institution; programmatic accreditation concerns particular programs, departments, or schools. Recognition of an accreditor, eligibility for public student aid, professional approval, and employer acceptance are distinct claims.
- Authenticate the certificate through the issuer. Use a document number or verification link only on the issuer’s or relevant government’s official domain. If there is no online lookup, contact the registrar or credential office using contact details from the institution’s official website. A platform completion page or generic badge is not proof of a regulated qualification.
- Ask the receiving organization for a decision. Give it the exact course and certificate, provider, study dates, and intended outcome. Ask whether the credential meets its credit, prerequisite, licensing, or equivalency rules, and keep the written response.
- Save dated evidence. Keep copies of the register entry, any program approval, the regulator’s status, issuer confirmation, and the receiving organization’s reply. Record when you checked because recognition and eligibility can change.
Where to check: official examples by jurisdiction
These are examples of official routes, not a complete international directory. Use the authority responsible for your country, credential type, study period, and intended use.
United States
The U.S. Department of Education directs people checking accreditation of online or distance education to its Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs. Its agency-recognition context concerns domestic postsecondary institutions, not high schools.

The 2026–2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook distinguishes institutional accreditation from programmatic accreditation and discusses accreditation in relation to Title IV institutional eligibility. That federal-aid context alone does not establish that an individual course will transfer, satisfy a professional license, or be accepted by a particular employer.
United Kingdom
In the UK, the route depends on where the learner studies and who awards the degree. GOV.UK points learners in England to the Office for Students register and recognized-award list; Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales have their own routes and/or recognized-award lists. Verify the awarding body, which may not be the college that teaches the course. GOV.UK notes: “Not all colleges that teach degrees can award them.” See its degree-awarding authority guidance.

For England, Ofqual’s Criteria for Recognition concern organizations seeking recognition to develop or award regulated qualifications. The page, updated 4 June 2026, notes separate criteria for V Level, Foundation Certificate, and Occupational Certificate. It is not a general certification of every online course.
India
The University Grants Commission (UGC) FAQ directs students to year-wise recognition status and approved programs for open and distance learning. Check the status for the exact admission session: recognition in one year does not establish recognition in the next. UGC also says the institution that issued a degree, diploma, or certificate is responsible for verifying that individual credential; its distance-education bureau provides recognition-status information. United Arab Emirates
The UAE Ministry’s service for recognizing foreign university qualifications includes checks on certificate authenticity and whether the institution was accredited by the relevant authority during the study period. A separate service verifies whether a Ministry-issued recognition certificate was officially issued and recorded. These procedures relate to the UAE; they do not guarantee acceptance in another jurisdiction or for every purpose. - The exact awarding body, separate from the teaching platform.
- The official recognition or authorization, including whether it is institutional or program-specific.
- Whether approval covers the particular course, delivery mode, and enrollment period.
- The credential level and whether it carries credit.
- How the issuer verifies an individual certificate.
- Whether the organization you care about has confirmed acceptance for your intended outcome.
- The time and cost involved in obtaining the credential and written confirmation.
Questions to ask before enrolling
- “Who awards the certificate, and what level or credit does it represent?”
- “Which official register or regulator lists the institution or program, and does that status cover my study dates and delivery mode?”
- “Can the issuing institution verify this certificate directly?”
- “Will this certificate meet the requirements for [specific outcome] in [jurisdiction]?”
Send the last question to the organization responsible for the decision, with the exact course and study dates. A provider’s assurance is not a substitute for that organization’s answer.
