Treat a viral photo or video as an unverified lead, not proof. Check who first shared it, search for earlier versions, test whether its time and location fit the evidence, and look for independent confirmation. If it suggests an immediate danger, report the possible threat promptly through the appropriate local emergency channel—clearly identifying what is unverified—while you continue checking.
What to verify: the claim, not just the image
A genuine photo can be paired with a false caption. Verify what the media supposedly shows, where it was made, and when—not merely whether the scene looks real. The House of Commons Library gives a concrete example: in 2024, a clip circulated as an explosion at Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge actually showed the 2022 Kerch Bridge explosion. Keep the conclusion proportional to the evidence. A clip may establish that something happened without establishing the cause, precise location, or date. A match to one landmark does not prove the caption. Several accounts repeating the same original post are not independent confirmation.
A practical verification workflow
1. Record the post and its claims
Note the post URL, account name, caption, and when you encountered it. If lawful and appropriate, keep a screenshot or copy for your own reference; a screenshot may omit the original file, metadata, or surrounding context. Avoid editing or publicly reposting sensitive footage just to investigate it.

2. Find the earliest version and assess the uploader
Check whether the account claims to have recorded the scene and whether it gives a plausible account of how it obtained the media. Search distinctive caption wording, watermarks, signs, and landmarks. Look for a source link and earlier copies. A version that predates the alleged incident is strong evidence that the media is miscaptioned or being reused, though it does not by itself explain every detail of the current claim.
3. Search the image or video frames
Run a reverse image search on the photo or a clear frame from the video. If possible, search more than one representative frame: a result may reveal an older event or a different location. No match does not prove the image is new or authentic. The Commons Library lists TinEye, Bing, Google, and InVID Verification as examples; the World Health Organization also recommends reverse-image tools and checking video thumbnails. Tool capabilities can change.

4. Test the claimed place and time
Write down what should be visible if the caption is accurate: building shapes, road layout, terrain, signs and language, weather, shadows, uniforms, or equipment. Compare those details with maps, satellite imagery, official updates, credible local reporting, and other material from the claimed date. The Associated Press describes checking landmarks, signage, weather, and language as part of a broader verification process.
Metadata can offer clues such as a capture time or location, but it is supporting evidence, not a verdict. Social platforms often strip metadata, and metadata in a downloaded file can be edited. Treat a timestamp or geotag cautiously unless it can be tied to a trustworthy original.

5. Seek independent confirmation
Check the organization responsible for the location or type of incident: for example, local emergency management, fire and rescue, police, a transport authority, or a public health department. Look for credible local reporting and genuinely independent eyewitness material. If several posts trace back to one upload, they do not provide several independent confirmations.
If you contact the uploader or an eyewitness, ask where and when the media was made and, when appropriate, request the original file or additional views. AP’s verification process includes contacting the original filmer, checking authorship and details, assessing possible manipulation, and obtaining permission before using user-generated content. 6. Report carefully and update if evidence changes
If the post suggests an immediate threat, report the possible danger through the appropriate emergency channel for that jurisdiction. State that the media is circulating, distinguish what you observed from what its caption claims, and provide the post or account details if useful. Emergency numbers and dispatch procedures vary by location; the sources cited here do not establish one universal number.

When correcting a claim publicly, avoid repeating false material if linking to an authoritative correction will suffice. The WHO warns that resharing known false content can spread it further. If new evidence changes your assessment, update your report clearly. See the WHO’s guidance on limiting misinformation.

When more than one explanation remains plausible, assess the evidence across these dimensions rather than forcing a yes-or-no verdict:
- Provenance: Is this the earliest available post, or a repost? Can the uploader be connected to the recording?
- Time: Does the earliest appearance fit the alleged incident date? Do other time-sensitive details agree?
- Location: Do landmarks, signs, language, weather, and geography match the claimed place?
- Corroboration: Are there independent recordings, reliable local reports, or an update from the responsible agency?
- Integrity: Are there signs of editing or discontinuities? Can the original file be checked?
- Urgency and uncertainty: What is credible enough to report now, and which details must remain explicitly unverified?
Verification can change as more evidence becomes available. The Commons Library notes that an assessment may not settle the truth permanently. Use a qualified conclusion when that is all the evidence supports.

Why common checks cannot prove a clip is authentic
- A reverse-search match can reveal reused content, but no match does not establish originality or truth.
- Metadata may be missing or editable, so it cannot establish provenance on its own.
- Visual oddities may prompt closer examination, but realistic AI-generated media may lack obvious defects. Appearance alone cannot reliably settle authenticity.
- One image or clip shows less than multiple independent recordings from different angles, and may not establish cause or context.
- More reposts do not equal more sources when they all derive from the same original.
Use tools to find leads and compare evidence, not as substitutes for provenance and corroboration. AP announced AP Verify in December 2025 as a professional newsroom dashboard for assessing online content; AP’s description of its purpose is not a guarantee that any tool can prove a particular item authentic.
