Before donating through a livestream link, independently confirm who will receive and control the money, whether the named charity recognizes the campaign, and what fees and refund terms apply. A real charity name or a streamer’s endorsement does not by itself verify that a particular fundraiser is authorized.
How do I know if a livestream fundraiser is legit?
There is no universal livestream-fundraiser verification standard established by the official guidance discussed here. Treat the stream as a lead, not proof: verify the organization and the specific campaign separately before paying.
- Write down the details. Note the exact charity or beneficiary name, the stated purpose, the organizer’s name, and the campaign page address. A familiar logo is not enough to establish who receives the money.
- Check the organization in an official register. Search the exact legal name and, where available, registration identifier with the relevant charity regulator in the organization’s jurisdiction. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission recommends using the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search when tax-exempt status matters. In Canada, check the CRA’s charities or qualified-donee listings. In the UK, check the appropriate regulator for England and Wales, Northern Ireland, or Scotland, as advised by the Fundraising Regulator.
- Verify the campaign outside the stream. Find the charity’s contact details independently, then ask whether it knows about the fundraiser and recognizes the organizer or payment destination. If a friend shared the appeal, ask them through a separate channel what they know. The FTC’s crowdfunding guidance also recommends researching the organizer.
- Inspect the payment route and terms. Before entering payment details, find out who receives the funds first, whether the platform or processor charges fees, when the money is transferred, and how refund requests and undelivered purposes are handled. Look for information on fund protection and suspected-fraud procedures as well.
- Check the campaign’s images and claims. Reverse-search the photos and compare any matches with the stated beneficiary, date, location, and campaign name. Reused images or inconsistent details are reasons to pause and confirm independently, not proof of fraud on their own.
- Decide only when the key details are clear. If you cannot establish who controls the money or the charity does not confirm the campaign, do not let live-chat urgency rush you. Contact the charity or navigate independently to its official website to find a giving option.
A campaign can name a legitimate charity without being authorized by it. Likewise, a cause may be legitimate even if it is not a registered charity; registration rules and legal categories differ by country. If an organization does not appear in a register, ask who receives and controls the money rather than treating the search result alone as proof either way.
How can I check where my donation goes?
Follow the money from the payment screen to its first recipient and then to the stated cause. The campaign page should make clear whether you are donating to the charity itself or to an individual or organizer who says they will pass the money along.

- Recipient: Record the legal name shown at checkout and whether the payment goes directly to the charity, a platform, or a person.
- Fees and transfer: Check any platform or processing fees, the amount or share that may reach the cause, and when and how funds are transferred.
- Purpose and refunds: Look for what happens if the stated purpose cannot be carried out and how refund requests are handled.
- Tax treatment: Do not assume a payment is tax deductible. Rules depend on your jurisdiction and the recipient; the FTC notes that a donation to an individual is not tax deductible merely because the person says they will forward it to a charity.
- Platform safeguards: Look for disclosures about protecting funds and responding to suspected fraud.
The UK Fundraising Regulator’s online-platform guidance, updated 4 November 2025, says key information should be prominent before a donor commits. It also says that when funds are not going straight to a charitable institution’s bank account, the platform must make clear before donation that the donor gives at their own risk. This is UK guidance, not a rule to assume applies worldwide.
Is it safer to donate through the charity’s website?
Donating through a charity’s official website can avoid uncertainty about whether a separate organizer is authorized, but first find the site independently rather than relying on a link in the stream. The Fundraising Regulator advises donors who are unsure about a campaign for a registered charity to contact the charity directly or donate directly; see its online giving guidance.

A campaign link and a direct donation can differ in recipient, fees, transfer timing, refund handling, evidence of the charity’s recognition, and tax treatment under local rules. Compare those details rather than assuming that either route has identical terms. A direct route is a practical alternative when the campaign’s organizer or money flow remains unclear.
What should I do if the fundraiser is only asking for crypto or gift cards?
Pause and do not pay until you have independently verified the appeal. The FTC warns that a charity saying the only way to donate is cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, a payment app, or a gift card is likely a scam. Canada Revenue Agency guidance also cautions about pressure to give immediately and cash-like alternatives such as gift cards or money orders. These warnings do not mean every use of a payment app is fraudulent; the concern is an unusual or exclusive payment demand combined with a lack of verifiable information.

Pressure to act now, vague answers about who receives funds, a personal recipient with no clear connection to the cause, missing platform disclosures, copied campaign images, or conflicting names all call for more checking. Ask the charity using independently found contact details, and use another route if the answers remain unclear.
