To verify whether a crypto token is listed, match its exact identity—not just its ticker—to a current market record on the exchange itself. Then inspect recent trades and order-book depth for the exact pair, and compare reported volume only after checking its units, time window, coverage, and freshness. These checks can show whether activity is observable; they cannot prove that every reported trade involved independent buyers and sellers.
1. Identify the exact token before searching
A ticker is not a unique identifier. Before looking for exchanges, record the token’s canonical name, ticker, contract address or native-asset identifier, and network from a reliable project or protocol reference. Check that these details match the asset you intend to investigate; similarly named tokens and reused tickers can otherwise lead you to the wrong market.
This method does not establish the listing status of any particular token. Repeat the checks for the exact asset and pair close to the time you plan to rely on the result.

- Open the exchange’s own current markets or products list. Search for the exact asset and the specific trading pair, such as TOKEN/USD or TOKEN/USDT. An aggregator’s token page can help you discover possible venues, but it is not by itself confirmation that a venue currently accepts orders for that pair.
- Record what the market page actually says. Note the exchange, pair, market status, and time checked. Where relevant, check network support for deposits and withdrawals separately from trading availability.
- Distinguish a market listing from access. A technically listed pair does not establish that the exchange serves your jurisdiction or that your account can use it. Treat regional and account-access restrictions as separate questions from whether the market exists.
Keep the pair exact: the same token may trade against different quote currencies, and a listing on one pair does not verify another.

3. Check whether trading activity is observable
Use the exchange’s market data for the exact pair, not just a token-wide volume figure. Inspect both recent trades and the order book. Recent trades show recorded executions; the order book shows displayed bids and asks, including the prices and quantities currently offered.
- Check whether trades have recent timestamps and whether the data identifies price, size, and side where the venue provides those fields.
- Look at bid and ask levels near the current price. A narrow spread and visible depth can help assess the market, but displayed orders can change or disappear.
- Record when you checked the data. A snapshot of trades or depth describes that moment; it does not guarantee that a future order can execute at the same price or size.
Exchange APIs can provide a more precise record than a summary chart. For example, Coinbase Exchange documents a product-specific latest-trades endpoint with time, price, size, side, and pagination. Kraken’s post-trade endpoint documents pair-filtered trade records with trade and publication timestamps, while its pre-trade endpoint documents aggregated bid and ask levels. These are examples of venue data, not evidence that either exchange lists an unspecified token.

4. Make sure volume figures are comparable
A displayed volume number is meaningful only alongside its measurement details. Before comparing figures, establish all of the following:
- Unit: Is the figure a quantity of the base token, or notional value in the quote currency?
- Time window: Is it a rolling 24-hour total, another interval, or a value for a particular period?
- Market coverage: Does it cover one pair, several specified pairs, or an exchange-wide total?
- Timestamp and freshness: When was it updated, and does the venue or data provider report delays?
Compare like with like: a 24-hour total for one pair is not equivalent to a venue-wide sum or a token total across multiple pairs. If a site does not make the unit, interval, or included markets clear, treat the number as insufficiently described rather than assuming what it measures.

5. Read the aggregator’s methodology
Aggregators may combine exchange data, filter markets, and assess exchanges in different ways. CoinGecko says its exchange-volume calculation sums the volumes of tracked trading pairs and excludes pairs it blacklists for inconsistent data or that have not updated for over three hours. Its methodology and Trust Score methodology describe provider-specific approaches; Trust Score looks beyond reported volume, including liquidity and cybersecurity considerations. These are CoinGecko’s methods, not a universal certification that a market’s volume is genuine.
When using any aggregator, note the provider, its update time, and whether the figure is for a pair or a broader set of markets. A filtered or stale figure may differ from the exchange’s own data without either number representing exactly the same measurement.

6. Understand what the checks cannot prove
Recent trade records can show that transactions were reported, and order-book data can show displayed interest at a moment in time. Neither establishes that all reported trades were between independent market participants, or that visible orders will remain available. Public-chain transfers also do not, on their own, show that independent parties traded on an exchange; exchange activity may be recorded off-chain.

In a 2023 proposed rule, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission wrote that “there is no reliable way to determine whether trades reported are actually between two different market participants or are the result of wash trading.” The same proposal said estimates of the share of total crypto-asset market volume attributable to wash trades “vary but range as high as 95%.” That is a range of estimates cited in the proposal—not a current estimate for any particular token, exchange, or market. See the Federal Register proposal published May 5, 2023.

7. Compare venues using the same checklist
If several exchanges appear to list the asset, compare each venue on the same dimensions rather than ranking them by a single volume number.
| What to compare | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Asset and pair status | Exact token identity, pair, and current market status | Confirms you are comparing the intended asset and market. |
| Quote currency and network | Quote asset for the pair; supported deposit or withdrawal network where relevant | Trading availability and transfer support are distinct. |
| Recent activity | Recent trade timestamps and the time the data was checked | Helps establish whether activity is observable and current. |
| Spread and displayed depth | Bid and ask prices and quantities near the market | Provides context on visible liquidity, without guaranteeing execution. |
| Volume definition | Units, interval, included pairs, and timestamp | Prevents unlike totals from being treated as directly comparable. |
| Data-provider treatment | Aggregator methodology, freshness notes, and exchange-quality approach | Explains why a third-party figure may differ from venue data. |
EU transparency rules have a defined scope
For covered EU crypto-asset trading-platform operators, MiCA Article 76 requires publication of price, volume, and transaction time as close to real time as technically possible. The specified information is made available free 15 minutes after publication in machine-readable form and retained for at least two years. MiCA Article 76 sets out that requirement.
MiCA Article 77 covers covered crypto-asset service providers exchanging crypto-assets for funds or other crypto-assets. ESMA’s Q&A 2181 says Article 77 information should be public without registration and that executed-transaction information would typically be expected to remain available until midnight of the following business day. These provisions apply within their specified EU and service scope; they are not global publication rules.
