To verify an exchange deposit or withdrawal, copy its transaction ID (TxID or transaction hash) from the exchange’s transaction history, open an explorer for the exact network used, and search the ID. Then compare the on-chain status and transfer details with the exchange record. An explorer confirms what the public ledger shows; it does not prove that an exchange has credited a deposit.

Find the transaction ID in your exchange account

  1. Open the exchange’s transaction or transfer history and select the specific deposit or withdrawal.
  2. Copy the identifier labelled TxID, transaction hash, or tx hash. Coinbase documents opening a transaction and selecting “View on block explorer”; Binance describes opening the transaction record and following its TxID link. Coinbase’s transaction-hash guide and Binance’s status guide explain these paths.
  3. Note the asset and network shown in that same record. The network matters: an ID from one blockchain is not a reliable lookup on another.

Choose an explorer for the matching network

Search the TxID in a block explorer that supports the chain named in the exchange record. Some exchanges provide a direct explorer link; otherwise, choose the relevant chain’s explorer yourself. Coinbase advises using the correct blockchain explorer for the cryptocurrency. Etherscan explains that a block explorer makes public blockchain information searchable, including transaction hashes.

Do not treat a similarly named asset or a familiar explorer as proof that you have the right network. For Ethereum-based assets, check that the explorer is set to the relevant Ethereum network. Token transfers may be shown in a token-transfer section rather than in the top-level transaction destination field; the exact layout varies between explorers.

Compare the explorer record with the exchange record

Once the TxID opens, compare the details that the selected chain and explorer expose. Etherscan identifies status, sender, recipient, and value as typical transaction information; Coinbase lists address, amount, date and time, network fee, and confirmations among details available from a transaction hash. Etherscan’s overview and Coinbase’s guide describe these fields.

Bitcoin: account for inputs, outputs, and change

Bitcoin transactions use inputs and outputs. An output is not necessarily the intended recipient: a wallet may send the recipient’s amount to one output and return change to an address controlled by the sender. Check the relevant output rather than assuming that every output is a separate payment. Blockstream’s lookup guide describes searching by transaction ID, address, or block height and reviewing a transaction’s status, confirmation count, inputs, outputs, and fee information. See Blockstream’s Bitcoin transaction lookup guide.

Ethereum and token transfers: inspect the relevant transfer

For an Ethereum or Ethereum-compatible transaction, review the transaction status and transfer details for the correct chain. If the exchange transfer involved a token, inspect the token-transfer information as well as the top-level transaction fields. Explorer interfaces differ, so a single field layout cannot be assumed across services.

Understand pending, confirmations, and finality

For Bitcoin, a pending transaction is generally broadcast but not yet included in a block. Once included, it has at least one confirmation; additional blocks increase its confirmation count. Blockstream’s guide explains these states and the transaction details displayed by its explorer. Blockstream’s explanation is specific to Bitcoin.

Ethereum uses additional technical chain-state terms. In the execution API, latest refers to the latest canonical-chain block observed by a client and may be reorged; safe and finalized express stronger protocol-level safety states, with finalized described as not expected to be reorged absent manual community intervention. These API terms describe chain state, not whether an exchange will credit a deposit. Ethereum Execution APIs documentation describes these block tags.

There is no universal confirmation count that means a deposit is ready everywhere. Binance notes that minimum Bitcoin confirmation requirements can change; thresholds depend on the platform and network. Check the receiving exchange’s current policy for the particular asset and network rather than applying a rule of thumb. Binance’s guidance covers this distinction.

Separate blockchain status from exchange processing

The explorer reports what it can find on the selected public network. The exchange’s deposit or withdrawal page reports its own workflow. A transaction can appear on-chain while the receiving exchange is still waiting for its confirmation threshold or processing the deposit internally.

If the explorer record matches but the balance has not updated, check the receiving platform’s deposit history and its current requirements. If the TxID is missing, ask the sending platform or sender for it; Binance advises contacting the platform when an identifier is unavailable. If the TxID opens but shows a different network, recipient, or asset than expected, preserve both the exchange record and explorer link for support. An explorer displays blockchain data; it cannot change or reverse a transfer. Binance’s transaction-status guidance addresses missing IDs and platform follow-up.

When a transaction does not appear

A failed lookup is not conclusive by itself. First confirm that the TxID was copied correctly and that the explorer is set to the network recorded by the exchange. Then check the sending exchange’s transaction status and ask it for an updated identifier if none is available.

There is also a technical reason that some lookups may not find a transaction: Bitcoin Core’s REST transaction endpoint searches the mempool by default and returns a 404 when a transaction is not found; retrieving confirmed transactions through that endpoint requires the transaction index to be enabled. This describes that endpoint’s behavior, not every public explorer, and a 404 alone does not establish that an exchange never initiated a transfer. Bitcoin Core’s REST documentation specifies the endpoint behavior.
