Before sending bitcoin, compare the full destination address with a trusted source, check the amount and fee on your wallet’s final review screen, and stop if any detail differs from what you intended. After sending, use the transaction ID (TXID) to check whether the transaction was broadcast and how many confirmations it has. These checks reduce mistakes, but they cannot make an irreversible payment recoverable.

Verify the recipient before entering an address

Get the address from a source you already trust, such as a saved contact or a fresh invoice you requested. If payment instructions change unexpectedly, confirm the change with the recipient through a previously established channel—not by replying to the message that supplied the new address.

Be alert to address poisoning: a scammer may send a small transaction from a lookalike address so it appears in your wallet history. Later, you might copy that misleading entry instead of the intended recipient’s address. Prefer a trusted saved address or freshly confirmed payment details over a similar-looking history entry. Bitcoin.org advises checking the entire address, not just its beginning and end: Avoid Scams.

A QR code is only a way to input payment details; it does not prove who controls the address. After scanning, inspect the address and any amount the wallet displays before proceeding. See Bitcoin.org’s explanation of receiving a payment.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Check the transaction before approving it

  1. Compare the complete destination address. Check every character against the trusted source. Do not rely only on a first-and-last-character spot check. If even one character differs, cancel and start again.
  2. Confirm the network or payment type. Make sure it matches the recipient’s instructions. Wallets and services may support different address formats; investigate any compatibility warning rather than overriding it.
  3. Review the amount and fee. On the wallet’s final transaction screen, verify the destination, bitcoin amount, and fee. Do not approve a prompt whose details differ from the payment you intended. Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance recommends checking transaction prompts.
  4. For a new recipient or a large payment, consider a test. Send a small amount first and wait for the recipient to confirm receipt before sending the remainder. A test is an extra safeguard, not a substitute for verifying the full address.

A hardware wallet can keep signing isolated from an internet-connected computer, and a device with a suitable display may let you review transaction details before signing. It cannot tell you whether the recipient is trustworthy. You still need to check the displayed destination and payment details. Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as a security option.

Know when to stop

  • The wallet’s final address does not match the full trusted address: cancel.
  • The recipient’s address changed unexpectedly: pause and verify the change through a previously trusted channel.
  • The amount, destination, or fee on the final prompt is not what you intended: do not approve it.
  • Someone claiming to be support asks for your seed phrase or private key: stop. Bitcoin.org warns that legitimate support teams and businesses will not ask for these secrets: Avoid Scams.

If you send bitcoin to an address you do not control, the funds may be permanently inaccessible. Bitcoin transactions should be treated as irreversible in practice; do not assume a wallet, exchange, or support agent can undo a mistaken transfer. See Bitcoin.org’s FAQ.

Check a transaction after sending

  1. Save the TXID. Your wallet should show a transaction ID after sending. Copy it from the wallet’s transaction details.
  2. Look up the transaction. Search for the TXID in your wallet or a blockchain explorer. An explorer reports the transaction information its data source can see; it does not verify that the recipient is the person or business you intended to pay.
  3. Read the status carefully. A broadcast or pending transaction has been sent to the network but is not yet included in a block. Once included in a block, it has one confirmation; later blocks add confirmations. A merchant may wait for a context-appropriate number before treating a payment as final. BIP 70 discusses merchants waiting for sufficient confirmations, but the sources here do not establish one threshold for every payment: BIP 70.

Confirmation timing is not guaranteed. Fees depend on transaction data size, not simply on the amount being sent, and a higher fee can encourage faster confirmation when the network is busy. Bitcoin.org explains confirmation and transaction fees; no fixed arrival time follows from these factors.

Wallet features that can help

Wallets differ in the address formats they support, how clearly they show fees and destination details, whether they can pair with hardware devices, and whether they let users validate transactions independently with a full node. These features can improve review or control, but none replaces checking the complete address and final transaction prompt. Bitcoin.org’s wallet feature overview describes options that vary by wallet.
