Connect the portable AC’s exhaust hose to its model-compatible window panel, fit the panel securely in the opening, and seal gaps as the manufacturer directs. Keep the hose routed without tight bends, stretching, or an unapproved extension. Exact connectors, panel dimensions, clearances, and hose limits vary by model, so check the owner’s manual before installation.
What you need before you start
- The portable AC’s owner’s manual and the supplied exhaust hose, connectors, and window panel or kit.
- A measurement of the open window, checked against the panel’s stated adjustment range and orientation.
- A suitable electrical outlet and a place near the window where the unit can sit without pulling, crushing, or tightly coiling the hose.
Window-kit instructions are model-specific: LG notes that guide images or content may differ by model, and Haier’s stated plate dimensions apply only to the parts described on its support page. Honeywell Home’s venting-kit article was last updated September 2, 2025.
How to install the window vent
- Check the manual and measure the opening. Identify the correct hose, connectors, panel, and panel orientation for your AC. Confirm that the kit fits the measured opening before assembling it.
- Position the AC. Put it near the window and a suitable outlet, leaving enough room for the hose to connect without being taut, crushed, or tightly coiled. Follow the model’s clearance and electrical instructions.
- Connect the hose to the AC. Attach the exhaust connector and hose in the order shown in the manual. Honeywell Home’s general sequence connects the exhaust connector to the unit, then attaches the hose; other models may use different connectors.
- Fit the window panel. Adjust or assemble the kit as directed, place it in the window opening, and close the window against it. Connect the other end of the hose to the panel adapter.
- Seal gaps as directed. Secure the panel and insulate remaining gaps according to the manufacturer’s instructions. LG says to “Insulate the gap of the installation board.” A gap can let hot exhaust air back into the room.
- Check the hose route. Keep the hose as straight and short as the supplied arrangement allows, and make sure its weight is not hanging on the window connection.
Choose a setup that fits your window
Sliding windows
Sliding windows commonly use an adjustable or multi-piece panel. Measure the opening and check the kit’s range and orientation in the manual; do not assume panels from different AC models have the same dimensions.
Casement windows
A standard rigid slider panel may not fit a casement window. Honeywell notes that a casement window may require a seal kit. Use a solution compatible with both the appliance and the opening.

Custom adaptations
A custom-fitted panel may be an option only if it can be made secure and compatible with the AC and window. Follow model guidance, and avoid modifying appliance parts or damaging the window. Haier’s support page describes a plate measuring 19 ¾ by 4 ¾ inches and says that plate cannot be modified; those measurements and restrictions apply to Haier’s described part, not to other brands’ kits.
Route the hose without restricting it
Do not stretch the hose or coil it tightly. Avoid adding an extension unless the AC manufacturer explicitly permits it: Honeywell warns that extending the supplied hose can restrict airflow, reduce cooling, and potentially affect the blower or warranty. Honeywell’s guidance for the models covered by its support page recommends placing the unit roughly 20–40 inches from its vent outlet; that is a Honeywell recommendation, not a universal distance.

GE Appliances advises using the exhaust hose unless the model manual says otherwise, discourages routing exhaust upward through a ceiling or roof, and warns against letting compressed hose weight hang on the window connection. The exhaust should go outdoors, not into the room or another indoor space you are trying to keep cool.

First compare the window opening and window type with the kit instructions. If a part is missing or damaged, look for a replacement kit, hose, or connector specified for the AC model. If the window type is incompatible with the supplied panel, check the manufacturer’s guidance for a compatible seal or other approved setup rather than assuming a generic panel or hose will work.

Before buying an accessory, verify the AC model, hose connection or diameter, adapter, and window dimensions. Many portable ACs include a hose and window kit, so a new kit is needed only if the supplied one is missing, damaged, or incompatible. Manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal cooling-efficiency or energy-savings figure for any particular seal.
