Use your Pixel 6 Pro to strengthen both the phone that protects your account and the Google Account itself: set a strong screen lock, enable 2-Step Verification, add a passkey, and make sure you can recover or locate the phone if it goes missing. Then review Google’s security tools and consider Advanced Protection if you face a higher risk of targeted attacks.

1. Set a strong screen lock on your Pixel 6 Pro

A secure screen lock protects access to the phone and is required to create and use passkeys. It also protects device backups with encryption.

  1. Open Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Screen lock. Labels can vary slightly by Android release.
  2. Choose a PIN, password, or supported biometric option. Google recommends a six-digit PIN for added security; a strong password is the most secure standard screen-lock option.
  3. Set up fingerprint or face unlock if you want faster access, while keeping the PIN or password as the underlying lock.

Choose a lock you can reliably remember. If you forget it, you may lose access to the device and to credentials that depend on it.

2. Turn on 2-Step Verification

2-Step Verification adds a second check after your password. It helps against password-stealing scams because an attacker would also need your phone or another verification factor. Google describes using a second step as quick and easy while making an account much more secure.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
  1. Open your Google Account’s Security & sign-in page.
  2. Select 2-Step Verification and follow the prompts to add a second step.
  3. Generate and store backup codes somewhere secure and separate from the Pixel 6 Pro.
  4. If you want an additional factor not dependent on the phone, add a compatible physical security key. Google calls a physical security key one of the strongest account-protection methods.

Backup codes matter especially if your Pixel is lost: Google requires 2-Step Verification for remote locking or erasing a lost primary Android device, and you may need another way to complete sign-in.

3. Add a passkey for passwordless sign-in

A passkey lets you sign in using the screen lock, PIN, password, or biometrics on your Pixel instead of typing your Google Account password. Google says passkeys cannot be shared or copied like passwords and can exist only on your devices.

Google’s Advanced Protection Program is intended for people at elevated risk of targeted attacks. It requires a passkey or security key for sign-in and can restrict some apps and services that request sensitive Google data. That added protection may affect compatibility or convenience, so check the program’s requirements and the services you rely on before enrolling.
