Windows Task Scheduler can start your streaming application at a chosen time, but it does not create a YouTube livestream or guarantee that a playlist will play, connect, and go live unattended. To schedule a playlist livestream, prepare the YouTube event and encoder first, then schedule the application launch and rehearse the entire chain on the PC and internet connection you plan to use.

What Task Scheduler can—and cannot—do

Task Scheduler runs a program after a trigger, such as a one-time time or recurring daily schedule. Microsoft describes it as a way to automate routine tasks on a chosen computer (Microsoft Learn: Task Scheduler for developers; Using the Task Scheduler).

That launch is only one link in the chain. Your chosen software must play or loop the playlist, route its audio and video into an encoder, connect to YouTube with the correct stream settings, and start the scheduled broadcast as intended. The Windows and YouTube guidance cited here does not verify a particular application or configuration that performs all those steps automatically. Check the documentation for your specific player and encoder, and test the exact setup before relying on it.

Prepare the YouTube event

  1. Enable live streaming if needed. In YouTube Studio, select Go Live. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the day of your planned broadcast. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Schedule the event. In Live Control Room, open the Manage tab and schedule a stream. Set its title, visibility, and other metadata, then save it. You can share a scheduled stream in advance; YouTube may let viewers opt into a reminder. Available settings are described in Manage live stream settings.
  3. Note the event time and visibility. In India, confirm Windows is set to your intended local time zone and check the task’s displayed next run time against the event time. Do not assume Task Scheduler will show IST correctly if Windows is configured for another time zone.

Set up the playlist and encoder

  1. Choose and configure your software. Your playlist playback source must produce audio and video that the encoder can send to YouTube. Confirm in the player and encoder documentation whether playback loops, whether launching the encoder also starts playback, and whether starting the application can connect and begin the scheduled event without a manual action. These details vary by software; a successful application launch alone does not establish them.
  2. Enter YouTube’s stream settings in the encoder. Use the stream URL and stream key shown for the event in YouTube Studio. YouTube says stream keys are like your stream’s password and address; keep the key private and never expose it in screenshots, task arguments, or material you share. Consult Manage live stream settings and your encoder’s instructions.
  3. Choose settings for your media and connection. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate, codecs, frame rates, keyframes, audio, resolutions, and bitrates. There is no single bitrate that suits every playlist: choose settings that match the resolution and frame rate of the source, the encoder, and your available upload capacity. Review Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Test with audio and movement similar to what you will stream, and check that both audio and video reach the encoder and YouTube preview.

Create a scheduled task to launch the application

Once the YouTube event and software are configured, create a task that starts the configured streaming application at the intended local time. The Windows steps below schedule an application launch; they do not supply a playlist command or establish that your software will automatically connect or publish.

#1 Best Overall
  1. Open Windows Task Scheduler and choose Create Basic Task (or Create Task if you need additional task options).
  2. Enter a recognizable task name, such as “YouTube playlist stream,” and continue to the trigger choice.
  3. Choose the trigger that matches the event: a one-time trigger for a single broadcast or a daily trigger for a recurring schedule. Set the date and time, and verify the displayed next run time.
  4. For the action, choose Start a program and browse to the executable for your configured streaming application. Use only arguments documented by that application’s publisher; do not guess a command line for opening or looping a playlist.
  5. Save the task and verify its trigger, action, and next run time. If the application needs an interactive logged-in desktop, a media file available to that user, or a particular audio device, check the app’s documentation and test those conditions. There is no universal setting for running every encoder unattended outside a logged-in session.

Microsoft documents scheduled application launches and common triggers in Using the Task Scheduler and Task Scheduler for developers.

If the PC will be asleep at the scheduled time

Task Scheduler offers a wake-the-computer option, but waking successfully depends on the PC’s hardware, firmware, and Windows power configuration. Windows may also need wake timers enabled in its power settings. Microsoft’s community guidance discusses these conditions, but it does not establish that every PC can wake reliably (Microsoft Q&A: waking a PC for a scheduled task).

Test a near-future trigger on the actual computer before scheduling a broadcast. If the PC is shut down rather than asleep, do not assume this task will power it on; verify the behavior supported by your hardware and firmware.

Rehearse and monitor the whole broadcast

YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live, confirm the event is accessible as intended, and monitor stream health. See YouTube live streaming tips and its encoder settings guidance.

For a meaningful rehearsal, check each link rather than only whether the task ran:

  • Did the task trigger at the displayed local time?
  • Did the application open in the right user session and access the playlist?
  • Did the playlist play, loop as intended, and provide both audio and video?
  • Did the encoder connect to YouTube with the correct event and stream key?
  • Did the Live Control Room preview show the expected picture and sound, and did the event start as intended?
  • Can you monitor the broadcast and recover if the connection or application fails?

Use a private or unlisted rehearsal if appropriate for your event. Do not treat a scheduled launch as proof that a public broadcast will begin successfully.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom What to check
The app does not open at the expected time Check the task’s trigger, displayed next run time, and Windows time-zone setting. If the PC was asleep, test wake-timer and hardware support on that machine.
The app opens, but the playlist does not play Confirm the configured source points to the intended media and that playback starts and loops in the chosen software. Task Scheduler launches the program; it does not configure playlist behavior.
YouTube does not receive video or audio Check the encoder’s YouTube stream URL and key, source routing, audio input, and encoder connection. Compare settings with YouTube’s encoder guidance and inspect the Live Control Room preview.
The stream is late or not live when expected Check whether the encoder only connected or also started the scheduled event. Verify the software’s start behavior and rehearse the full workflow; automatic Go Live behavior is application-specific.
The broadcast drops or quality degrades Check stream health, available upload capacity, and whether the chosen bitrate and quality suit the connection. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming one setting works for every setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

If keeping a PC and home connection running is the difficult part, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video in the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on. Each slot supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live production service. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
