Convert suitable JPEG and PNG images to WebP, serve the result only to browsers that can display it (or provide a fallback), and check both image quality and file size. WebP can reduce the bytes an image transfers, which may help it download sooner; it does not guarantee a faster page or a particular Core Web Vitals improvement. The size savings depend on the image and encoding settings.
What WebP changes—and what it does not
WebP is a RIFF-based image format that supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation. It can cover uses commonly handled by JPEG, PNG, and GIF, though the right format depends on the image and how it will be used. The format is described in RFC 9649.
Google reports that lossy WebP files were 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG files at equivalent SSIM quality in its comparisons, and that lossless WebP files were 26% smaller than PNG files. These are reported comparisons, not a promise for every image or website. A smaller image can reduce transferred image bytes and potentially its download time. Actual page speed also depends on other resources and conditions, so measure your own pages rather than treating a format conversion as a guaranteed performance or Core Web Vitals gain. See Google’s WebP overview.
Choose images and compression settings
Start with images that matter
Inventory your site and prioritize images that are large or frequently requested, such as prominent hero images or product photography. Use site analytics or a performance audit to identify candidates; there is no universal priority order. Keep the original source files so you can create new variants later without repeatedly recompressing an already compressed image.

Use lossy WebP for photos when the trade-off looks good
Lossy compression can reduce photographic image size, with some visual information traded for smaller files. The acceptable setting depends on the image and its display size. Inspect the result at the size visitors will see, paying attention to gradients, fine detail, edges, and artifacts. Do not choose a setting based on byte count alone.
Use lossless WebP when preserving pixels matters
Lossless WebP preserves the source pixels. It can be appropriate when that matters, including for graphics with sharp edges or transparency, but compare the resulting file to the original PNG rather than assuming every image will shrink. WebP supports alpha transparency and animation as well; inspect transparent edges and animated output in the contexts where they will be used.
Convert JPEG and PNG files with cwebp
Google provides the cwebp encoder. Install it using the instructions for your operating system, then convert an image by specifying the source and an output file. For a lossy photo conversion:

cwebp photo.jpg -o photo.webp
For a lossless conversion:
cwebp -lossless graphic.png -o graphic.webp
To test a lossy quality setting, add a quality value with -q (the range is 0–100):
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemscwebp -q 80 photo.jpg -o photo.webp
Treat that value as a starting point, not a universal recommendation. Compare the output visually and check its actual byte size against the source. Google documents cwebp and other WebP tools in its WebP overview.
For a site with many images, put conversion in the publishing workflow, build process, CMS, or image-delivery pipeline rather than relying on repeated manual conversions. The original assets should remain available for regeneration and comparison.

Serve WebP with a fallback
Use picture and source in HTML
The <picture> element lets the browser choose a WebP source when it supports that format, while the nested <img> supplies the fallback:
<picture>
<source srcset="/images/product.webp" type="image/webp">
<img src="/images/product.jpg" alt="Product shown from the front">
</picture>
Use the actual alternative format you retain as the fallback: JPEG for a photograph, or PNG where its characteristics, such as transparency, are needed. Keep meaningful alternative text on the <img>. Test the WebP and fallback paths rather than assuming that a correct-looking HTML snippet proves both files exist and load.
Use server or CDN content negotiation when appropriate
A server or image CDN can inspect the request’s accepted formats and return an appropriate representation. Google’s WebP FAQ describes Accept-header negotiation and serving WebP to clients that support it: WebP FAQ. This can avoid writing separate markup for every representation, but it depends on the delivery setup correctly selecting and caching variants. Test both supported and fallback responses, including any cache behavior relevant to your configuration.

Google’s overview lists native support in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and Opera. Browser support changes over time, and older or unusual clients, tooling constraints, or images used outside the browser pipeline may still make a fallback useful. Avoid relying on historical minimum-version figures as a current compatibility matrix; check the needs of your audience and test the clients you support.
Serve dimensions suited to the display
Changing format does not fix an oversized image. If a small screen receives a very large source image, it may still download more pixel data than it needs. Provide responsive dimensions so the browser can select an appropriate source for the viewport and display density. Google’s guidance explains the responsive-image trade-off between storage and markup: Serve responsive images.

The width descriptors must match the actual pixel widths of the corresponding files, and the sizes value should reflect the rendered layout. Generate only variants that make sense for your layouts and display needs; every extra variant adds files to maintain.

Measure whether the change helped
- Record a baseline. Choose representative pages and conditions, including mobile and desktop, and note image transfer sizes and page performance before changing assets.
- Compare equivalent images. At an acceptable visual quality, compare the WebP output’s bytes with the actual JPEG or PNG it replaces. Inspect photographs, gradients, fine details, and transparency edges.
- Check delivery paths. Confirm that compatible clients receive WebP and that clients using the fallback receive the intended JPEG or PNG. Verify responsive selections and that the files load successfully.
- Measure the page again. Compare under representative conditions and separate the image-byte change from other contributors to load time. Results for one page or test condition do not establish the gain for another.
Google’s image performance guidance discusses image delivery and modern formats. Neither that guidance nor the cited format comparisons establish a guaranteed site-specific page-load or Core Web Vitals improvement.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The WebP file is not smaller. Some source images or settings may not compress better. Compare actual byte sizes and visual quality; retain the source format when it is the better result.
- The image looks worse. A lossy setting may be too aggressive for the content or rendered size. Try a higher quality setting, inspect the image at its intended size, or use lossless encoding where pixel preservation is important.
- Some visitors see a broken image. Check that the WebP URL is correct and that the file is deployed. Confirm the fallback file and markup or server negotiation work for clients that do not receive WebP.
- The page still transfers oversized images. WebP reduces encoding size but does not reduce pixel dimensions automatically. Generate suitable responsive variants and confirm the browser is selecting the expected file.
- A CDN or cache returns the wrong variant. Verify how the delivery layer chooses and caches representations, then test requests that do and do not accept WebP. Incorrect negotiation or variant caching can defeat a correct source setup.
- Conversion fails or output differs from expectations. Confirm the installed encoder is available and that the input is supported by your conversion workflow. Keep originals, review the generated output, and test the exact files delivered on the site.

If you need screenshots of web pages rather than a pipeline for converting your own image files, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API returns a screenshot or PDF in one GET request; it is not a WebP encoder or a substitute for responsive image delivery.
For example, request a screenshot as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Does WebP support transparency and animation?
Yes. WebP supports alpha transparency and animation, as well as lossy and lossless compression.
Will converting every image to WebP make my website faster?
No. WebP can reduce image bytes, but savings vary by source image and encoding settings, and a site’s overall speed depends on more than image format.
