In Star Wars: Galactic Racer, use weapons and takedowns to create a passing opportunity—not as a substitute for racing well. Keep a clean line, use boosts to gain a useful angle, and pressure a rival toward a wall or obstacle only when the track makes that approach safe. Abilities and controls vary by loadout and platform, so check the description and binding for your equipped ability in-game.
How to use weapons against other racers
Weapons are part of the game’s unlockable special abilities, rather than a confirmed set of permanently mounted guns. A PlayStation Blog hands-on report from a pre-release PS5 demo says players can unlock and equip abilities that include weapons and shields. It does not provide a complete weapon list or establish damage, cooldowns, counters, or exact effects.

Check your equipped ability’s in-game description and current control binding before a race. The same PS5 demo used L1 to activate an ability, but that is a demo- and platform-specific control reference, not a universal current binding. Use an offensive ability when it can disrupt a rival or help open a pass without pulling you onto a dangerous line. A shield may be useful when contact threatens your own run; its exact effectiveness depends on the equipped ability.
How to set up a takedown
A documented way to wreck a rival is to force them into a wall or other obstacle. The opportunity comes from positioning: approach with enough speed to pressure the opponent’s path, and try to keep the hazard on the side toward which you can safely push them. Do not turn a possible takedown into a collision with the same obstacle yourself.

- Choose the opening. Look for a section where the route gives you room to approach and a wall or obstacle can constrain the rival’s path.
- Build speed without losing control. Use a boost to close the gap or improve your position, but leave room to brake and turn.
- Apply pressure, then return to the racing line. Once the takedown occurs, stop pursuing the rival and focus on the next corner or hazard.
- Recover immediately after the camera cut. A PC Gamer reviewer reported that a takedown camera can leave the player aimed directly at a wall at high speed. Check your direction as soon as control returns and steer away from the next hazard.
That camera behavior is a reviewer’s observation, not a guarantee that every takedown reorients your craft the same way.
When to use Afterburner or Ramjet
Afterburner is the smaller boost on a cooldown; Ramjet is faster but can dangerously overheat if pushed too far, according to PC Gamer’s October 2, 2026 post-launch review. Use either to close a gap or set up a pass when the track permits. With Ramjet, watch the heat and status cues, and avoid holding it into a corner where you need to brake or change direction.

The PlayStation Blog’s pre-release PS5 demo described Afterburner as a quick burst for overtaking or extending a lead, activated with X, and Ramjet as the stronger booster, activated by holding R3. Those bindings are not confirmed for every platform or the current release. Check your platform’s in-game controls rather than relying on the demo inputs.
How to manage heat and track effects
Heat is not only about how long you use Ramjet. PC Gamer reported that the Cooled status can trigger at high speed or while cruising over water and lower heat, while Burning can result from a rival’s flame jets or racing over lava and raise it. The review also mentions Overcharged, Corroded, and Shielded, without providing a full status reference chart.

Use the visible heat and status indicators during a run instead of assuming every ability or track surface has the same effect. If heat is climbing, ease off the stronger boost before a demanding turn; if the course offers a cooling opportunity, treat it as useful only when taking that route still leaves you in control.
Choose a craft that helps you hold the line
Official vehicle descriptions and the PlayStation hands-on report support these qualitative trade-offs. They do not establish a universally best craft for takedowns; choose for the circuit and for the handling you can control while pursuing a rival.

Keep the race ahead of the takedown
Galactic Racer is still a racing game: route choice, speed management, and craft-specific handling matter more than chasing every rival. Pursue a takedown when the track gives you a favorable setup; otherwise, preserve your route and concentrate on the next turn. No complete current weapon roster, exact cooldowns, damage values, or guaranteed takedown thresholds are established by the cited sources, so a weapon tier list or guaranteed recipe would be misleading.
