Scan one item at a time, confirm it appears in the register’s item list, and review the list and quantities before paying. If an item will not scan or you cannot tell whether it registered, pause and ask a Walmart associate to make sure it is included. Follow the prompts on your specific register and keep your receipt.
Use this routine at a standard self-checkout register
- Scan and confirm each item. Scan one item, then check that it appears in the on-screen item list before setting it aside or moving on. Register screens and indicators vary, so use the confirmation shown on your lane rather than relying on a particular sound or bagging-area behavior.
- Handle items that need extra steps. Follow the screen or associate’s directions for produce that needs to be weighed or counted, age-restricted products that need verification, and any other prompt or item check.
- Review before paying. Check the displayed item descriptions and quantities against what you are buying. A total alone does not confirm that every item is listed correctly.
- Complete payment and keep the receipt. Follow the register’s payment prompts and make sure the transaction is complete before leaving the checkout area.
If a scan fails or you are unsure an item registered
Do not assume an item was added just because you passed it over the scanner. Pause, retry only as the register directs, or ask an associate to help add or account for it before completing payment. Walmart’s Scan & Go terms specifically tell customers who cannot scan a product to consult an associate so it is reflected in the digital cart before checkout or on the physical or digital receipt after checkout: Walmart+ Terms of Use.
If the item list or receipt appears to be missing something, ask an associate to review it before you leave. Walmart’s terms say an associate may review products and receipts and may require a rescan or recalculation; that describes a possible process, not a check every customer should expect.
How Walmart Scan & Go differs
Scan & Go is an app-based option for Walmart+ members at participating stores, not a universal set of instructions for standard self-checkout registers. Walmart’s Scan & Go guidance describes this sequence:

- Open the Walmart app in the store and select Scan & Go.
- Scan an item’s barcode as you add it to your cart.
- Open the cart view and verify that the items and quantities are correct.
- Select checkout in the app, go to self-checkout, and scan the QR code displayed at the register.
- Follow the register prompts, confirm payment, and complete the transaction.
The terms require Scan & Go users to scan products accurately and pay for all items obtained. Some produce may show an estimated price until checkout asks for a weight or count. Certain products may not be eligible, and local store circumstances can require a cart transfer to a self-checkout or staffed register. Availability, eligible items, and prompts can vary; Walmart says the service is subject to change. A completed Scan & Go transaction produces a digital receipt or, in some cases, a printed register receipt.

If you would rather have help scanning or are uncomfortable proceeding when an item is uncertain, ask an associate for an available staffed lane. Walmart says cashier checkout remains available for customers who prefer it, and associates can answer checkout questions: Walmart Corporate: Do I have to use self-checkout?
