To use your desktop’s VS Code environment from a browser, turn on Remote Tunnel Access on the desktop, sign in, then open the tunnel’s vscode.dev link on your other device. Your desktop remains the development machine; the browser is the client. The host must stay powered on, connected, and running the tunnel for you to reach it.
What VS Code Remote Tunnels does
Remote Tunnels connects a VS Code client to the VS Code Server on another machine. Your project files and development environment stay on that host, while you use a browser or desktop VS Code as the interface. Microsoft says the connection can provide features such as IntelliSense, code navigation, and debugging on the remote machine. Microsoft’s Remote Tunnels documentation explains the feature and supported workflow.
This is different from opening vscode.dev by itself. Browser VS Code has limitations compared with desktop VS Code, including constraints on runtimes, terminals, debuggers, and extensions. A tunnel gives the browser access to a remote development environment, but it does not make every browser capability identical to the desktop application. Turn on Remote Tunnel Access from the desktop
- On the computer that has your project and development tools, open VS Code.
- Open the Account menu and select Turn on Remote Tunnel Access. You can also open the Command Palette and run Remote Tunnels: Turn on Remote Tunnel Access….
- Sign in when VS Code prompts you. Microsoft’s documented flow uses GitHub sign-in.
- After the tunnel starts, use the vscode.dev link shown in VS Code’s notification on the device you want to code from.
The Account menu is the feature’s convenient entry point; Microsoft’s November 2022 VS Code 1.74 release notes also record its introduction there and in the Command Palette: VS Code 1.74 release notes.

Start a tunnel from the command line instead
If you do not want to start the tunnel through the desktop UI, run code tunnel on the host. The built-in code command-line interface comes with VS Code Desktop. Microsoft also provides a standalone CLI for remote systems where installing the full desktop application is not suitable. The CLI downloads and starts VS Code Server as needed; on first run, accept the server license terms. It then displays a vscode.dev URL for the remote machine. Sign in to the tunneling service when making the first client connection. See Microsoft’s CLI documentation and Remote Tunnels instructions.
What needs to stay running
For a UI-started tunnel, the host is reachable while VS Code remains running there. If you exit VS Code, the machine becomes unavailable through that tunnel until VS Code is open again or you start a tunnel with code tunnel. The CLI documentation describes pressing Ctrl+C to stop an active CLI tunnel.

In practical terms, a desktop you want to reach remotely must remain powered on and connected, and its relevant VS Code process or CLI tunnel must remain active. Sleep settings, network interruptions, and organizational policies can affect availability; Microsoft’s general documentation does not guarantee every machine or network configuration.

Authentication and network considerations
Microsoft says tunnel hosting and connecting require authentication with the same GitHub or Microsoft account. Its documentation describes VS Code making outbound connections to an Azure-hosted service, generally without requiring firewall changes or opening a network listener. It also describes an SSH connection over the tunnel for end-to-end encryption and identifies AES 256 in CTR mode as the then-preferred cipher. These are Microsoft’s documented design details, not an independent security audit or a guarantee that every organization permits the connection.
If you use a managed work computer or network, your sign-in policy or firewall rules may still block access. Check with your organization’s administrator rather than assuming the tunnel will work on every network.

When browser access is a good fit
- Use a tunnel when the project, tools, or files are already on your desktop and you want to reach that environment from another browser or VS Code client.
- Use browser-only VS Code when you need a lightweight editing experience and do not need the desktop host’s runtime, terminal, debugger, or full extension support.
- Choose another remote development setup if your desktop cannot remain available or your organization does not permit tunnel authentication or outbound connections. The right alternative depends on your environment and policies.
