Use YouTube Studio when you need scheduling and more stream-setting options; choose Stream Now when you want vMix to reuse the same stream settings for later broadcasts. The steps below follow vMix’s overview, last updated April 9, 2025, and its version-specific Help 29 guide.
Choose where to create the YouTube stream

These two workflows are described by vMix’s YouTube Live overview. Neither route is universally better: pick according to whether event scheduling and additional stream controls or recurring reuse matters more.
Route 1: Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live event and open its stream settings.
- Copy the stream key shown for that event. Treat it as private account information; do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your channel.
- In vMix, open the streaming settings and select YouTube as the destination. Enter the key from YouTube Studio, then select an appropriate quality profile and encoder.
- Start streaming from vMix and check YouTube Studio to confirm the incoming stream is reaching the intended event.
Route 2: Create the event through vMix Stream Now
- Open vMix’s streaming settings and choose its YouTube Live Stream Now destination.
- Follow the prompts to connect the YouTube account and create the stream.
- Select a quality profile and encoder, then start streaming.
For later broadcasts, vMix says Stream Now can reuse the same stream without changing the YouTube stream settings. Confirm the destination shown in vMix before each broadcast, especially if you also use other streaming configurations.
Configure vMix and start the broadcast
The exact labels can vary by vMix version. The steps below follow the vMix Help 29 User Guide; check the guide for your installed version if a control differs.

- Open the streaming settings by clicking the cog next to the Stream control.
- Choose YouTube or, if you are entering provider details yourself, Custom RTMP Server.
- For a custom destination, enter the URL and stream name/key exactly as the provider supplies them. For YouTube Studio events, use the event’s current details in YouTube Studio rather than an example key or a saved value that may belong to another event.
- Choose a quality profile and encoder suited to your production and connection. Help 29 describes FFMPEG as included with vMix and supporting H.264 video and AAC audio; do not assume that every vMix version presents identical options.
- Start the stream from vMix. Confirm the event is receiving the feed before relying on it as live.
If vMix reports an error shortly after startup, the User Guide’s first suggested check is whether the selected destination details match those supplied by the service.
Choose quality for your connection and audience
There is no single bitrate or resolution that is right for every production. vMix says quality depends on factors such as available internet connection speed and viewer needs. Check the current stream settings shown by YouTube Studio for the event, then choose a vMix profile that your connection can sustain reliably; avoid selecting a higher-quality profile solely because it is available.

Older vMix Help 27 documentation describes quality controls including configured bitrate, encode size, audio bitrate, and audio format. Those are useful concepts, but the page is version-specific: verify the names and available controls against the guide for your installed version. The sources cited here do not establish a universal YouTube bitrate, resolution recommendation, upload-speed threshold, account eligibility rule, or platform maximum. Consult current YouTube Studio stream settings for platform-specific requirements.
Understand delay and network buffering
The delay configured in vMix is a minimum wait before vMix connects and begins sending the stream; it does not guarantee the total delay viewers experience. The streaming provider and individual viewers’ connections and browsers can add further delay. vMix’s older Help 27 quality documentation also notes that increasing the network buffer can help when the maximum available network speed is unreliable. Check the documentation for your installed version before changing buffering controls.

Troubleshoot a stream that will not start or reach YouTube
- vMix reports an error shortly after startup: Re-check the chosen destination and compare the URL and stream key/name character for character with the values supplied by YouTube or the selected provider.
- The stream starts but the expected event does not receive it: Verify that vMix is using the key and destination for the intended YouTube event, not a different or outdated configuration.
- You need more connection detail: While the stream is running, open View Status in vMix and inspect its technical information.
- The connection is unstable at your available network speed: Reconsider the selected quality profile; if your installed version offers the relevant network buffer control, consult its guide about increasing the buffer when maximum speed is unreliable.
- A YouTube-side requirement or account restriction is unclear: Check current YouTube Studio guidance. The cited vMix workflow documentation does not establish YouTube account eligibility or current platform ingest limits.
When you need an external video source
A capture device is optional equipment for bringing an external source, such as an HDMI camera feed, into the production computer. It is not required merely to send a production that is already available in vMix to YouTube. If you need one, choose it to match your computer’s ports, the source’s output format, and your production requirements. vMix’s training catalog includes material on internal and external capture devices, but it is not a compatibility list for specific hardware.
