You can use two phone numbers on one iPhone by adding a second cellular plan, then choosing which line handles calls and messages and which supplies cellular data. First check that your iPhone model and carrier support the SIM setup you want; for two different carriers, the iPhone must be unlocked.

Check that your iPhone and plans are compatible

Apple supports Dual SIM with eSIM on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later, but the available SIM configurations vary by model and country or region. iPhone 13 models and later can use two eSIMs; a compatible earlier model can pair a physical nano-SIM with an eSIM. Your carrier must also support eSIM and the plan you intend to add. See Apple’s Dual SIM and eSIM requirements.

  • Using two carriers: The iPhone must be unlocked. To check, open Settings > General > About and look for “No SIM Restrictions” beside Carrier Lock.
  • Using one carrier: Apple says both plans can be from the same carrier; confirm that carrier supports your intended setup.
  • Using a work plan: A company-managed plan may require approval from your organization’s administrator.

Apple’s model guidance is a general compatibility floor, not a guarantee that every regional iPhone variant supports every physical-SIM and eSIM combination. If you are unsure, check the exact model and plan with Apple and your carrier.

Add and label the second cellular plan

Arrange activation with the carrier for the second line. Depending on the carrier, you may be able to activate through its app, carrier activation, Quick Transfer, or a QR code; not every carrier offers every method. Follow the carrier’s instructions and any on-screen prompts on the iPhone.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max, US Version, 2TB, eSIM, Cosmic Orange- Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

When prompted, label each plan—for example, “Personal” and “Business,” or “Home” and “Travel.” Labels make it easier to recognize the line when placing calls, sending messages, choosing cellular data, and assigning a preferred number to a contact.

Choose the default number for calls and messages

During setup, choose a default number for calls and messages to people who are not in your Contacts. You can change the preference later in Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data, depending on your iOS version or region). The iPhone can remember which line you last used with a contact and use that line again. For a contact you have not called before, it uses the default line unless you set a preferred line for that contact.

Choose which line uses cellular data

Voice and data preferences are separate: choose a default line for calls and messages, then select the plan for cellular data in Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data). You can keep data on one chosen line or turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching, if available, so the iPhone can switch between plans according to coverage and availability. Menu wording may vary by iOS version or region.

Even with switching enabled, the iPhone uses one cellular data network at a time; it does not combine both plans into simultaneous cellular data connections. For details on the setting and data behavior, see Apple’s Dual SIM guide.

What to expect when you call, text, or receive a call

Both lines can make and receive voice calls and FaceTime calls, and send and receive iMessage, SMS, and MMS. Which line is used depends on your defaults and, for contacts, any previous line choice or contact preference.

An incoming call on one line can be affected while you are on a call using the other. Whether you can answer it depends on carrier support and settings. Apple notes that Wi-Fi Calling on the other number may let you answer that line during a call; without supported and enabled Wi-Fi Calling, the call may go to voicemail. If a call uses a line other than the selected data line, Allow Cellular Data Switching may be needed for calls on the other line. These outcomes are carrier- and setting-dependent, not guaranteed for every setup. See Apple’s iPhone Dual SIM guide.

Use a second eSIM while traveling

You can keep your home number on one line and add a travel eSIM from a local or worldwide provider on the other. Before buying or activating a travel plan, check whether your home carrier includes roaming or offers a travel pass, and make sure the iPhone is unlocked if the travel plan uses another carrier. Apple says local prepaid plans may be available before departure or in the destination country, including at carrier stores and airport kiosks. Read Apple’s guidance on using eSIM while traveling internationally.

Check the travel provider’s current terms for destination coverage, data allowance, plan duration, cost, and whether voice calls and SMS are included. A travel eSIM may be data-only, so do not assume it provides a second conventional phone number.

Troubleshoot a second line that will not work

  • Confirm both cellular plans are active and ready to use.
  • Check that the iPhone supports the SIM configuration and that the carrier supports eSIM and Dual SIM with eSIM.
  • If you are using different carriers, confirm the iPhone is unlocked. If it is locked, verify that both plans are from the same carrier.
  • Review the selected defaults and data line in Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data), and check relevant options such as Allow Cellular Data Switching.
  • If these checks do not resolve the issue, contact your carrier. Apple’s checklist is available at If Dual SIM with eSIM isn’t working on your iPhone.
