You can make the taskbar clear, blurred, acrylic, opaque, or leave it in the normal Windows style. Its settings are available from the app’s notification-area icon, while advanced options are stored in a JSON file.
This guide covers installation, startup, appearance modes, transparent-taskbar settings, per-application rules, and common problems that can prevent settings from working.
What you need to know before installing
- The latest official release is 2026.1, released on March 7, 2026.
- TranslucentTB supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. The current portable build is for Windows 11 only.
- The Microsoft Store version can update automatically in the background.
- TranslucentTB changes the Windows taskbar; it is not a replacement taskbar.
Install TranslucentTB in Windows 11
Option 1: Install from Microsoft Store
- Open the Microsoft Store.
- Search for TranslucentTB.
- Open the official app listing and select Get or Install.
- After installation, select Open.
The Store/MSIX version supports background automatic updates. After TranslucentTB starts, look for its icon in the notification area. If it is not visible, select the hidden-icons arrow near the clock.
Option 2: Use App Installer
- Open the TranslucentTB releases page.
- Download TranslucentTB.appinstaller.
- Open the downloaded file.
- Follow the App Installer prompts.
Option 3: Use the portable build
For Windows 11, download TranslucentTB-portable-x64.zip from the current release. Extract the ZIP file to a permanent folder, then run the TranslucentTB executable. The portable version does not install an app package or use the installed-app startup mechanism.

Open TranslucentTB’s controls
- Start TranslucentTB.
- Select the hidden-icons arrow in the Windows taskbar if necessary.
- Right-click the TranslucentTB tray icon.
The context menu is where you choose the taskbar appearance, configure dynamic behavior, and enable startup. If you close the tray process, its taskbar effects will stop.
Change the taskbar appearance
Right-click the TranslucentTB tray icon and choose the appearance setting you want. The available effect labels mean the following:
| Setting | Result |
|---|---|
| Normal | Uses the regular Windows taskbar appearance. |
| Opaque | Shows a tinted taskbar without transparency. |
| Clear | Applies a transparent taskbar effect. |
| Blur | Applies a blurred transparency effect. |
| Acrylic | Uses an acrylic material effect similar to Microsoft Fluent Design. |
Blur availability depends on the Windows 11 taskbar implementation and build. It was removed for some Windows 11 configurations and later reintroduced for XAML-based taskbars on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. Selecting Blur therefore does not guarantee the same result on every Windows 11 installation.
Make the taskbar change automatically
TranslucentTB can use different appearances for different Windows states. From the tray icon’s context menu, configure one or more of these dynamic modes:
- Visible window
- Maximized window
- Start opened
- Search opened
- Task View opened
Multiple dynamic modes can be enabled together. For example, you can use a clear taskbar on the desktop, an acrylic taskbar when a window is maximized, and a different appearance when the Start menu opens.
On Windows 11, TranslucentTB can also show or hide the taskbar accent line for the active appearance state. The thin line is part of Windows and exists even when TranslucentTB is not running; the application only controls whether it is shown for configured states.
Enable TranslucentTB when Windows starts
Installed version
- Right-click the TranslucentTB tray icon.
- Select or check Open at boot.
- Restart Windows to verify that the app starts automatically.
If Open at boot is disabled or grayed out, the project documents these policy values under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System:

Changing the registry can affect application startup behavior. Create a restore point or export the relevant registry key before editing it.
Portable version
For the portable build, create a shortcut to the TranslucentTB executable and place it in %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.
To open that folder quickly, press Win + R, enter shell:startup, and press Enter. The portable build needs this shortcut because it does not register the installed-app startup option.

%LocalAppData%\Packages\28017CharlesMilette.TranslucentTB_v826wp6bftszj\RoamingState\settings.json
For the portable version, settings.json is stored in the same directory as the application executable. See the official configuration documentation for configuration details.

Close TranslucentTB before manually editing the file. Make a backup copy first, then open settings.json in Notepad or another text editor. A transparent desktop taskbar configuration uses these values: desktop_appearance, accent: clear, color: #00000000, show_peek: false, and show_line: false, along with the recommended schema declaration https://TranslucentTB.github.io/settings.schema.json.
#00000000 is transparent black. TranslucentTB accepts #RRGGBB and #RRGGBBAA hexadecimal color formats, where the final two characters specify transparency.
Adjust blur and the Windows 11 accent line
These options can be added to an appearance section:
- show_line: false hides the Windows 11 taskbar accent line for that state.
- show_line: true shows it.
- blur_radius: 9.0 controls the blur amount when the blur accent is used. The documented typical range is 0.0 to 50.0.
The desktop_appearance section is the default appearance. It cannot be disabled; it applies whenever no other appearance state is active.

Application rules can match a window’s window_class, window_title, or process_name. For example, a process-name rule can make Chrome use an acrylic taskbar when its window is maximized: enable maximized_window_appearance, set its default accent to normal, and add a process_name rule for chrome.exe with the acrylic accent, color #000000AA, and show_line: true.
Replace chrome.exe with the actual process name if necessary. When rules conflict, a matching rule for the highest-Z-order maximized window takes priority. If no maximized window matches, TranslucentTB checks the active foreground window and applies the matching rule to the monitor containing that window.
The inactive rule property controls the appearance when a targeted window is not focused. It currently has no effect for visible-window rules because those rules are evaluated only for the foreground window.
Useful advanced settings
The configuration file supports optional global settings including hide_tray: true, which hides the TranslucentTB notification-area icon; disable_saving: false, which leaves automatic configuration saving enabled; and use_xaml_context_menu: true, which uses the modern XAML context menu. Set the last option to false for the classic Win32 menu.

The configuration will not load
Invalid JSON or schema errors prevent settings from loading correctly. Check for missing commas, unmatched braces, incorrect quotation marks, and unsupported property names. The configuration documentation provides the recommended schema declaration.
My settings do not save
Check that disable_saving has not been set to true. Remove the setting or set it to false.
An application rule does not work
The process name or window class may be wrong. Verify the exact values with a tool such as Spy++ or AutoHotkey Window Spy. Process names must include the executable extension, such as chrome.exe.
I see “Element not found” or XAML-diagnostics errors
Release 2025.1 changed XAML-diagnostics initialization to try increasingly higher VisualDiagConnection values. Release 2026.1 moved initial XAML-diagnostics initialization to a thread to address timeout problems. Update to 2026.1 before attempting older workarounds.
It stops working after reinstalling
Update to the current release. Version 2026.1 added functionality to kill Explorer when the package is uninstalled, addressing cases where the application failed immediately after being reinstalled. If necessary, restart Windows after uninstalling and then install the current package again.
It behaves incorrectly with another taskbar utility
TranslucentTB documents compatibility with RoundedTB and ExplorerPatcher, and 2026.1 improved compatibility with applications that fake a taskbar. Combinations can still fail when versions change. Temporarily disable the other taskbar utility to identify whether it is causing the conflict.
The taskbar breaks after sleep, resume, or a monitor change
Restart TranslucentTB first. If the problem continues, update the application and Windows. Sleep/resume, display hot-plugging, and multiple-monitor assignment have been historical failure areas, although later releases added fixes for several of them.
Antivirus software flags the application
The project states that some antivirus products may report false positives. TranslucentTB is open source, and its source and build information are available through the project repository. Do not add an exclusion until you have checked the file source and your security software’s report.
Uninstall TranslucentTB
For the Store/MSIX version, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find TranslucentTB, select the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall. If you used the portable version, exit the app and delete its extracted folder. Also remove its Startup-folder shortcut if you created one.

The Bottom Line
For most Windows 11 users, install TranslucentTB from the Microsoft Store, open its tray menu, choose Clear, Blur, or Acrylic, and enable Open at boot. Use settings.json when you need transparent colors, control over the taskbar line, custom blur strength, or application-specific rules. If a configuration fails, validate the JSON first and update to release 2026.1 before troubleshooting older XAML, Explorer, sleep, or monitor-related problems.
