Windows 11 switches to touch-oriented behavior automatically on supported 2-in-1 devices; it has no manual Tablet mode switch. Windows 10 has a Tablet mode toggle, but its support ended on October 14, 2025. Menu labels and behavior can vary by Windows release and laptop model.
Use the touchscreen
Windows touch basics work much like common phone and tablet controls:
- Tap an item to select or open it.
- Press and hold an item to reveal more commands, similar to right-clicking.
- Drag two fingers horizontally or vertically to scroll.
- Pinch or stretch two fingers to zoom in or out where the app supports it.
Some additional gestures can be enabled in Windows 11 at Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touch. Three-finger swipes can show open windows, show the desktop, or switch to the last open app; a four-finger swipe left or right can switch desktops. One-finger swipes from the screen edges can open notifications or widgets when enabled. Three- and four-finger gestures may conflict with similar controls inside some apps. These settings are for the touchscreen; touchpad gestures are configured separately under Touchpad.
Understand tablet behavior by Windows version
Windows 11: tablet behavior is automatic
Windows 11 does not include a manual Tablet mode toggle. On supported devices, it adjusts for tablet use when a wired or Bluetooth keyboard is detached or the laptop is converted to a tablet form. Attaching a keyboard or returning the device to its traditional laptop form turns that behavior off. If your device supports tablet functionality, you may also find Optimize taskbar for touch interactions when this device is used as a tablet in Taskbar settings.

Windows 10: use the Action Center toggle
In Windows 10, open Action Center and select the Tablet mode tile. If you do not see it, expand the quick actions. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.
Connect and configure a digital pen
A compatible pen can be used for handwriting, drawing, document markup, and navigation. Compatibility and features depend on both the pen and the laptop, so check the manufacturers’ information for your exact model before buying. A generic touchscreen stylus should not be assumed to support pressure, tilt, Bluetooth pairing, or shortcut buttons.

- Put the pen into Bluetooth pairing mode using its model-specific instructions. The procedure differs by pen; Surface Pen instructions are not universal.
- On the laptop, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth and select the pen when it appears.
- For supported pen settings in Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink. Choose your writing hand and configure available shortcut-button actions.
In Windows 11, the Pen Menu can be opened from the taskbar system tray. Its default shortcuts include OneNote, Whiteboard, Snipping Tool, and Journal, and you can pin up to four apps. Charging and battery requirements vary: some pens recharge, while others use a replaceable AAAA battery.
Type or write with the touch keyboard
The touch keyboard provides on-screen typing when the physical keyboard is folded back or detached. To open it manually, use its taskbar icon; if the icon is not visible, use taskbar settings to show it. Windows also has settings for always displaying the icon and for showing the keyboard automatically in tablet mode when no keyboard is attached, though exact options and behavior vary by version and settings.

Keyboard layouts include a handwriting panel where you can write with a compatible pen or fingertip. If fingertip handwriting is unavailable, check the Pen & Windows Ink settings. Layout options such as swipe typing and split keyboards can vary by language.

If taps do nothing, check the device entry in Device Manager. This is a basic enablement check, not a full diagnosis of hardware or driver faults.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices and look for HID-compliant touch screen.
- If the entry is disabled, open its context menu and choose the enable option. If there are multiple matching entries, repeat for each one.
If the screen still does not respond after this check, consult support for the specific laptop model.
